View Full Version : EL Sound With One Switch

Ok I finally got the parts and had time to sit down and work out the EL sound with one switch.

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f217/Do-Clo/elsound.jpg

I used a Anakin color change sound board because it does not have flash on clash, it does have sound on clash though. I used a 8 AA battery holder and with a volt meter found a rivet on top of the pack near where the battery connector snaps on that was a ground point that would give 6 volts between that rivet and the main battery positive connector.

I connected the positive wire from the battery pack to the EL inverter and to the sound board. I connected the Negative wire from the battery pack to the EL inverter. I soldered a wire from the rivet on top of the battery pack and connected it to the ground of the sound board. Now I have 6 volts to run the sound board and 12 volts to run the inverter.

I used a 5 volt relay and wired it to the out put from the sound board that went to the leds, and I installed a switching diode to reduce the voltage from the sound board to 5.3 volts to power the relay. The relay when powered up switches on the power inverter by connecting the switched wires from the inverter to the relay. I removed the motion sensor from the led board and connected it to the wires from the sound board that attach to it on the led board.

When you press the momentary switch on the sound board you get a power up flash on the EL blade that looks good and matches the power up sound from the sound board, the same when the board powers down you get a flash on the blade that matches the power down sound. You still have your clash sound but no flash on clash since this board does not have it. You will need a 1.5 inch hilt to fit the sound board into as this is a big board but it works well and allows you to have only one switch to operate both sound and blade.

So would this setup also work with other boards as well?

On a more through look... this would work for one with the LEDs, meaning the Obi and Anakin, correct? OR it'd just be like normal with the negative going straight back to the battery?

And a basic work around also I one didn't have a 8AA qould be to break it in half as two 4AA, OR a voltage regulator, correct?

It looks good. I just want to make sure everything is straight on how it'd be used for other circumstances.[:)]

This would work with other hasbro boards but most have the flash on clash which would make your blade flash every time you got the clash sound, that is why I used the color change board which there should be several available yet. Xwing this really is for EL setups it could be used for led with modifications but you can run the led off of the hasbro sound board so this would be extra parts to do the same thing. The big problem for el has be a way to turn on the inverter and sound board with one switch, which is what I built this circuit for and you could use a 8 AAA battery holder if space was an issue or you could use two 4 cell holders if you were careful about wiring them in series and connecting at the right point for 6 volts for the sound board, this eliminates the need for a voltage regulator or complicated switches.

What I meant is the Anakin and Obi use an LED array as opposed to a 1W bulb. Meaning the ones with the bulbs don't have two wires to put to the relay. I was wondering if the positive would be the "lamp wire" and the negative from the relay go to the battery (just like it does on the board normally).

Yes that would work also, sorry I missed what you meant. This could be used with just about any hasbro sound board, I just had a color change board and I like the no flash on clash which helped me decide.[:p]

So why are people trying to get rid of the F.O.C.? Is it just annoying, or does it mess up the EL blade for some reason?

The power up and down flash looks pretty good on the el blade but I don't Like the flash on clash but it is up to each person to decide what they like.

What kind of diode do you have? I looked on RadioShack.com, and they have lots of diodes, but different numbers...what are the specs on yours?

Hey guys, i hate to revive an old thread but i had a couple of questions regarding the whole one button switch for the hasbro board for an El blade. i was able to dig up an AOTC anakin hasbro saber, so i was going to use the board from there. Now here's my questions:

1) Is this the 5volt relay that we're talking about here?: http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2062599&cp=&sr=1&origkw=voltage+regulator&kw=voltage+regulator&parentPage=search

2) If it is the same one, does the middle "common" prong connect to anything?...i know the outside ones are "input" and "output" but does that middle prong need to connect to anything?

3) Is this the correct switching diode?: http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2062587&cp=&sr=1&origkw=switching+diode&kw=switching+diode&parentPage=search

I have limited knowledge to wiring electronics but i want to learn. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

haha....thanks do-clo...i just responded back to your PM as well....ok...here's my next question....on the relay, which prongs are which in terms of positive negative? and why are there 5 prongs?

Do-Clo
04-23-2007, 05:00 PM
One pair of prongs are the relay coil which will attach to the sound board and the others are a combination of normally open and normally closed contacts. The package should have a diagram on the back telling you which is which.

Sweet....i'm going to pick up the relay and diode tomorrow then....this way the hilt will be ready for when my stuff comes in from Tim...thanks again....i will definitely contact you again, if i encounter any problems

Hey everybody, sorry to sound a bit stupid but im not to good at understanding the wiring diagrams, has anyone got one of these wired up?

Thanks :D

Any thoughts on what it would take to add an MR sound board to an old Parks M2 EL unit?

If I read you tutorial correctly...

If I can step down the 9V to 4.3ish (what the MR board wants) I should be able to wire it into the existing inverter by way of the inverter switch wires... Correct?

and since the MR board outputs a lower voltage on the LED wires that would connect to the inverter switch wires... I should be able to remove the Diode and use a lower voltage relay. The voltage of the relay doesn't mater because it's just being a switch for the inverter. The power for the EL if via the Power leads that are connected directly to the 9V Battery.

Or am I getting this completely wrong?

Ok, brining this one up as I am itching to modify my beloved graflex ANH style saber.

I have one of the newer boards (the Obi Wan with force feedback (which is just that motor thing)). Is it really necessary to have the diode and such in there?
Or would taking it out totally fry the EL inverter (i've got a 4khz one).

Also, what about using a 9volt battery..does that totally fry the hasbro?

Just trying to find a good common ground without having to buy more parts :D

Do-Clo
09-26-2008, 05:35 PM
You could use a 9volt for the the el converter and a 4 aaa pack for the hasbrosound board.

ThreeQuadFive
09-26-2008, 06:20 PM
For the sake of cramming it all into a graflex hilt, how would i use a 9volt with it all?

Do-Clo
09-26-2008, 08:30 PM
9 volts is too much for the Hasbro sound board, you could use a 5volt regulator but the 9 volt battery has a small ma capacity so run time is really going to be the pits.

Ah the heck with it then.

I'm saving up for a Crystal Focus Sound board.
Heck I should pre-order it now..now just need to sell my guitar :)
