A friend had me build this as a Christmas present for his brother-in-law. He wanted something resembling the classic ANH Ben Kenobi saber, and this is the closest I could get with my building methods. It's not a design I would have made for myself, but I find I like it a lot more than I expected.

As usual, this was constructed using only a hacksaw, cordless drill, and various files.

Thoughts?

I think its nice....

especially for the tools used.

how long is it?

the only 'negative' that jumps out at me (and could be just personal preference)..

but there seems to be an awful lot of screws. (I understand there isnt much you can do to make it secure.)

I like it. It has a very early industrial revolution look about it.

You know, I forgot to measure. I'll post a length when I get home this afternoon.

It wasn't intended to have so many screws. I tried to get away with two on each joint, but that proved to be a bit wobbly due to the fact that a couple of the segments don't extend very far into each other. Three would have worked, but since I already had holes drilled on opposing sides, I kinda had to go straight for four. I just think of it as some kind of studded mace ;)

I'm going to build a sleeker version for my father, one without all the segments on the emitter and far fewer screws.

I like it, I don't mind the screws so much and most of them are rounded pan head screws so it's not like your going to catch your skin on them. Good saber!

Great looking saber. I am impressed with what you accomplished with the tools you had. Great job.

Not bad at all....impressive for only those tools. Must have took a while to file. The bolts actually look OK. I am super curious how you layered which parts to do this. I have a layered project on the go. Nothing quite like this but I can appreciate being creative with the parts at hand and the variations you can come up with. My guess would be Aluminum sleeve, MHS adapters, extensions and 1.25 sinktube...but that's no sinktube....(scratches head).

It's all aluminum tube (not to be confused with pipe, of course ;) ) in various diameters and thicknesses; no MHS parts or brass sink tube at all. I've found some aluminum tube with an inner diameter of 1.245" that fits Tim's sink tube blade holder quite nicely, and the aluminum is much easier than brass to work with by hand.

Some of the diagrams I have on Flickr for this saber are a few revisions old, but this one has a cutaway of the emitter layering:

very tight man. Ive seen a couple few builds in the forums that push my thinking further and that stacked plate like work gives me some great ideas. Thanks for pushing for creativity.

Man, this is a cool setup. Layers using "beefy" tubing looks great. Really solid looking.

I like it - especially the way you made the activation button "cover" - very nice and clean work there...

hacksaw? Really? Dang man...

That whole button section was supposed to be reminiscent of a Graflex clamp.

Be honest, does it look anything at all like the ANH Kenobi saber? If it at least reminds you of it slightly, I can be happy.

You know, I really like your work. Your style is unique, I like this saber, and I absolutely loved "Intent"! I like the "bolty" look, and the industrial style you've seem to have developed. Your sabers just have a menacing functionality to them that says to me that one way or another this saber's opponent is going down! Great job!:)

"Menacing functionality", I like that, thanks. Do you and DJMoonbass mind if I quote you guys in the instruction manual I'll be including with this thing?

Oh, and to answer xl97's question (very very late, sorry): it's just under 13 inches long, and 4 of that is the emitter section.

Dude you make a mean saber, very nice work once again!

I usually don't like the nuts n bolts look but this design really makes it work. It looks like ancient jedi style or something.:) Very unique, well done.

No, I can't speak for DJ, but I don't mind at all if you quote me! I'm honored actually. :)

I really like how much patience you have in building sabers. The last one was excellent and this is as good in a different kind of way.

I wish I could sit and file or construct like this, I'd have finished more sabers if I did....

Speaking of, this has inspired me to finish the filing job I've been putting off for weeks.

Can't wait to see your next effort.

What did you use for the plug when the blade is out? Looks great!

Also I know it's been some time but do you mind sharing the measurements for the tubes used?

Second that thought! I love that blade plug. I too would like to know how you made that plug.

I'm having to estimate from the picture, but I'm pretty sure this is correct. From top left, in order:

-----
Battery Holder - 4"
1.25" OD X 0.125" Wall
(Bottom half filled with 1" rod)

Spacer - 1.5"
1.25" OD X 0.125" Wall

Neck - 3"
1" OD X 0.125" Wall

Spacer - 1.5"
1.25" OD X 0.125" Wall

Body - ~6"
1.5" OD X 0.125" Wall

Emitter Inner - 3"
1.375" OD X 0.065" Wall
(Fits a TCSS sink pipe blade holder very nicely with a little padding. I use aluminum tape.)

Pommel - 1"
1.5" OD X 0.125" Wall

Pseudoclamp - 2"
1.625" OD X 0.058" Wall

Ring - ~1/2"
1.5" OD X 0.058" Wall

Emitter Outer - 2"
1.5" OD X 0.058" Wall

D-Ring Spacer - ~3/4"
1.5" OD Brass Sink Pipe (cut)

Button Plate - 3"
1.625" OD X 0.058" Wall (cut)
-----

The blade plug is just one of Tim's 3/4" blade reducers with a piece of 3/4" aluminum rod in the center. When I make more, I'll just order some of the thick-walled blade polycarbonate and cut lengths from that. How do people usually make them?

Kastor

Wow! Thanks so much, this is a big help. What a neat idea for the plug. Most people it seems either just won't have them or use a chunk of like a rubbery rod sold in the store. that way it is well protected. I've also seen people make Crystal plugs with larger quartz crystals.
