View Full Version : MHS builder- basic electronics kit?

What is included in the basic electronics kit that comes with the MHS builder saber? Things like the LED, lens and lens holder and a switch are givens, but what else? I would like to use some goodies on my sabers like quick change kits, switch boots, and a 4aaa battery pack, but before I buy, I need to know what's included so I can figure out the final price of my saber.

Hover (put mouse over) over the text "Add basic electronics package for" and it will have a little java popup that tells you.

I tried the hover thing, and it didn't work for me, so I still need to know what's in this thing.

<font size="3"><font color="blue">Maybe you don't have Java on your computer? I had to specifically download it for my new computer a couple years ago when I started running Windows XP.

Here's what the Basic Electronics package includes:

2.2ohm Resistor
Luxeon III 3w LED
10 degreen Lens
Lens holder
Switch03
4AAA battery holder</font id="blue"></font id="size3">

The basic kit includes:
2.2 ohm resistor
Luxeon 3 watt led
10 degree optic
Optic holder
Switch
4 AAA battery holder

The hover works if you put your mouse pointer on the words basic electronics kit

Thanks everybody- so the only thing I would need to add is the quick-change kit. I was fooling with the MHS saber builder and designed a pretty sweet double ended lightstaff, but it was getting pretty steep. So what I might end up doing is ordering half of it- one saber. (I want to be able to convert the staff to dual-sword by swapping the connector for two pommels) That way, it won't be such a trauma to my bank account:)

Unless Tim speaks with Ultra about getting stock of some MR boards probably not. The Hasbros were cheap but the supply of them dried up and MR is the only other decent option with Ultra being the only steady supplier.

You can ship your MHS hilt to Ultra and he will convert it to sound for $60. This is not bad considering how long I have been trying to do this. I spent a S**T load of money and a whole lotta time working with J-Lo on this. All we got was an ugly saber that didn't work and a whole lotta trashed sound cards, speakers and other crap. Of course this was before this board came to be. Ultra is using MR boards and Radio shack speakers for his conversion. I am sending my hilt off today to have him do it. If I tried to do it myself, I would end up soldering my fingers to the board or having sound coming out the emitter and light coming out the pommel or some other stupid thing. Thank the Maker that guys like Tim and Alex are around for us.

I've been thinking of a way to do that.

I think it would make more sence for the sound to come out of that side of the saber, since that's the way the "Real" ones would be.

One of the designs that I am about half done with will have the sound up near the emitter area and still be able to have a nice high grip.

I don't doubt that. Corbin said he burnt out a lot of boards until he found out the clash sensor had power going through it and needed two clash sensors, but you could follow the tutorials for LED.

Has anyone seen Ultra's work on the sound installation? Does he put a new endcap on the hilt, or just drill holes in what you have? I'd have numerous MR FX sabers, and would love to add Anakin's ROTS FX sound to my custom.. problem is that I'm using a 5w Lux and there isn't a Corbin driver for that yet. [V]

Corbins driver will work with a 5w lux. Just be sure to apply enough voltage.

I intend to run parallel 9v batteries as Ultra does for the 5w Lux.. would it be asking to much of the batteries to run a Corbin driver and MR sound card too? Is the Corbin driver necessary to use the MR card?

I'm also considering the use of a 4AAA battery pack on my custom.. I am probably going to test illumination with both setups, since I really don't know what to expect. [?]

xwingband
05-19-2006, 11:09 AM
An MR board can't take 9V. Corbin's driver isn't needed for the MR card, but an MR card will not run a 5W. It will either get fried or run it at 3W depending on how you power it.

Couldn't I just wire in different resistors in front of each connection? Lets say I run a 4AAA pack straight to the 5w Lux, but send a separate power wire (after the On/Off button of course) to the MR sound board w/ the appropiate resistor in place - would that work?

xwingband
05-19-2006, 11:50 AM
That would work but the LED wouldn't be at full power (forward voltage of almost 7V). An MR board can take up to 6V, any more and you'd need to run a voltage reducer like people with EL.

SO...

It's either run it slightly lower and not have to do anything fancy to the LED

OR

Run it full power with a resistor and have to pull down the voltage by a voltage reducer or a whole seperate battery pack.

You may want to wait to see what Tim pulls out for sound.

If you are going to use an Anakin board I can get the diagram for you. The other boards you will have to ask Corbin for exact details. You must remember that you are going to need a butt load of power to run that, 12V most likely. Corbin's board can power a 5W LED.

The explaination is Corbin's driver really isn't a wattage driver. It regulates the amperage. The 1W does 350ma while the "3w" driver does 700ma. The 5W LED also runs at this amperage but needs more voltage. That's why the 3W CAN work for a 5W LED.

Well, yeah... you'd probably need someway to not fry the sound board. two power packs, something else, etc...

Tim said around this week for the sound suprise.

Use whatever board you want... There are no Red 5W's at all because a 3W Red can be run a lot higher. The blues and greens max at 1000ma but the Red can go to 1450ma. So Corbin's board at 700ma is about half that.[:0]

Is what good or bad? If you mean how much a red can take it just means a 3W Red maxed out is on par with a 5W. It's just a cruddy fact that it's a waste to make seperate drivers for each color.

No it's not bad really. It just means Corbin's board is only giving it half of what it can take. Meaning it can be twice as bright. If you want all the features of his board then go with it, but if you want a freakin' bright saber go another way that will really juice all that's capable out of it.

I say get a Yausa 12 volt 100Ahr battery and no resistor and you will have a wicked bright Red saber...

Corbin has only posted a schematic for an Anakin board. Obviously the more "evil" sounding one would be any of the "sith" ones like the Vader. You'd have to ask corbin for a diagram for that one.

Also... I can tell you haven't read nearly enough if you think you'll need a resistor while using Corbin's board.[;)]
