I saw these at wal mart today:

and they got me thinking about short lightsabers.

Short lightsabers...

this guy has kind of a short lightsaber. He's not supposed to but it's concept art, we'll cut him some slack.

Sure, it's longer that what a dagger is but it's shorter than what a "saber" is anyway.

So I got to thinking, what if someone were to have something stealthy like a lightdagger? Something the size of a compact two "AA" cell flashlight that could emit a beam about 7-10 inches long?

cool, no?

there is something similar to that. not sure how long the hilt is but it could help with size comparison to a full hilt. The only problem i see is finding a blade that small. Or you could just go for a shoto which is about half the size hilt and blade.

No, I think the main problem would be making an adequately strong blade holder that small. You could probably actually use parts of a flash light, like the LED and the reflector from one, you wouldn't need fancy optics for a short blade. And it's not hard finding smaller diameter polycarb tubing, if you know where to look.

I once made an EL lightdagger that had a 20" blade that was 5/8" in diameter. I didn't have to worry about optics, obviously.

Of course you could do that.

Size matters not Judge me by my size do you. & well you should nouuu

Eeerrmm....... well maybe size matters yes umm eeerrrr.

The end o todays lesson it is.

grab a 3 piece hilt a lux one and then cut down some pollycarb?

lux one should be sufficient for a dagger. just order a blade bigger than you want, cut it down and add your own blade tip.

I actually started one a while back. I have it working, just no switch yet. I custom machined a blade holder to fit a MR Yoda blade. The hilt is only 4" long and the total length is only 16" long. It has a nice even lit blade. I will post a thread on it when I get the switch put in.

That's nice, easy to conceal in a boot top.

I think a lightdagger should have a 3/4" blade though. It'll be better proportioned and not look "fat" like a short piece of 1" blade will.

That is not 1". It is just over 7/8" It is from a Yoda MR blade and they are smaller in diameter than the other MRs. It looks very proportional.

Yoda MR blades are 13/16" (slightly larger than 3/4" but slightly smaller than 7/8") That looks good Rhyen. A 3/4" blade would also look great.

Yo Fearsome Grue...that is McQuarrie concept art for Ep IV and those sabers are full sized, they just have flare at the emitter. Look at the size ratio between the blade and the stormtrooper and Han Solo...;)

I think you should take a Phenyl Oxalate lightstick and wrap some electrical tape for a grip to make a light butter knife.

How about the Toasting Knife from Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy? :p

I was only speaking in generalities about not using a 1" blade for a lightdagger. Though Rhyen's blade still looks a little fat, to me.

I tell everyone at troops and conventions that I can cut my bread and toast it at the same time. lol

It's totally doable.

I've posted it before, but I made a nice little Light Dagger out of a doctor's otoscope. The handle is about 5" long, and just over 1" diameter. It has a 21" long, 3/4" blade. It uses a Lux I, a micro puck, and two AAA batteries.

It's just a nice size to hold in your hand, and I imagined it was the sort of thing that could be tucked into a boot.

That pretty cool. I like the simple knurling. Would a smaller diameter (1/2"ish) be alright for dueling? I would like to make one also but have been wondering how to actually do it

I don't think I would actually duel with it. It's more for show. Even if the dagger was strong enough, I really don't think you could effectively block a heavy blow with it.

Just my opinion. I could be wrong.

Also, if you used a 1/2" blade, you would have a hard time getting it to light well.

If you were to sand the outside of a 1/2" blade, or go with nylon, it would be just as bright as a 3/4" thick walled blade. it would likely be pretty floppy though.

The real use for shotos i have seen is for getting in close after you have struck or blocked with a full length lightsaber. I have a friend who is pretty good with one. He kicks my butt all the time with it cause im not accustomed to dueling someone with two blades. I was just wondering if the smaller diameter blade would help if you wanted to scale down a full size saber.
