View Full Version : So, what do you do for a living?

Firebird21

I was just curious about what y’all do for a living. Past, present, and future.

Myself, I went to Vocational school for Auto Body and got a job at a Body Shop during my senior year, and worked there for just over 4 years.
It was good work, it was gratifying, and low stress. But the pay wasn’t that great on the high end. I was doing rather well for my age at the time. But I wasn’t too fond of the “Bondo-Buggers” and other health risks (Like sterilization) and I got greedy. A $7.00/hr. (49%) pay increase over 4 years wasn’t good enough for me… What was I thinking?!

Currently I am an Independent Auto Damage Insurance Appraiser.
I basically write appraisals for damaged vehicles and argue with Body Shops all day.

I hate it, it sux, but I usually get home at 11:00-12:00 everyday and make more than my wife who leaves at 8:00 and gets home at 7:00. And she went to collage! lol Oh, but wait... She likes her job...

I am patiently looking for another career. Maybe something in construction. I have talked to my boss about getting into the Home and Property end of the buisness, but I'm not too sure that will solve my problem with this job.

I am taking a Bartending class right now and hope to get into a nice bar soon to pick up some extra cash. And who knows, maybe it will be lucrative enough to support us with. Some bartenders in the Boston area make 6 figures! So you never know.

So what do you do?

Short version is I am an electronic technician that couldn't stand being couped up so I took my talents to the electronic security industry. I used to put in really top notch, custom stuff in residential, commercial, and industrial applications. Back in 98 I hurt my back pretty bad and ended up getting some surgery, healed up went back in the field, moved up to management did that but ended up back in the field after one of our moves. Hurt my back again and I have been watching the kids ever since. We sat down and did the math and figured out by the time I paid all of my work expenses that on a good week I would bring home enough to cover the daycare on three kids and a bad week we would be paying for me to work in a job that I didn't love anymore since everything has gone to the “free” slap it in alarm equipment. I am doing the online classes to finish off my degree now and I figure one the youngest goes off to school I will head out on a new career.

Meh, I haven't done a whole lot.

- Worked at Publix as a bagboy
- Work as a graphic artist for The Salvation Army (present)

Been doing the graphic gig for almost 5 years now, and was promoted to Lead Graphic Artist about 3.5 years ago. Whoo.

Now, though, my wife and I will be moving to North Carolina, so who knows what'll happen next.

Ah, and on the side, I do a lot of freelance commission work for anime artwork.

jobs during and pre highschool cater primarilly to grunt work... landscaping and such. Spent a couple years doing volunteer work in Korea, came back and went to college where i got a job manning computer labs, they seemed to like me there and i was promoted to lab manager. Did the managering thing for a couple years then moved on post degree to my current location where i see myself retiring working as a computer technician for a local school district. Mostly it involves hardware repair and software maintenance... but i love it and i work with great people. Who could ask for more, i even have enough cash to build a saber every now and again.

well, as most already know by now, i learned how to weld when i was 10 yrs old from my dad, one of the best i ever seen. not braggin, around here he was regarded the best.

worked at his weld shops thru summer vacations. graduated high school went to work full time at his shop he worked at. moved around to different places of work over the years, all welding places.

then in 1980 i went to work at worthington cylinders claremore. was there for 19 years, it was a fast paced assembly weld line that built the freon cylinders the air guy comes to yer house and adds freon with. we did several other products. in wal-mart and k-mart and toyr us, you see the cylinders we made we put helium in and made a party pack set in a box. also black bart and lil red charcoal grills. i seen they were goin down hill and left them back in 2001

i made a complete career change and went to work with my wife at bama frozen dough in tulsa. we make all the dough for the PIZZA HUT chain. and a few other things, like pies for mc'donalds.and such. some dough for papa johns pizza. so on ansd so forth.

<font size="3"><font color="blue">The first place I worked was my dad's Dental office. I didn't go to school for it, but with OJT (On the Job Training, if you don't know [;)]), I did everything a dental assistant would do. I've seen some pretty awful things that happen to people's mouths, mostly from neglect.[xx(] http://media.ign.com/boardfaces/26.gif

Then I went to technical school to become a computer tech (this was in the 80s and there weren't too many PCs around yet).

I got a job as a Field Tech, working for a company that maintained mainframes and wrote software for welding companies. (Our Bay Area office had a welding company that had Skywalker Ranch as a customer, they bought welding gases from them. I had to fly up there one week and take calls when that branch's Field Tech quit and happened to see Skywalker Ranch on someone's monitor when on a call. [:D])

Then I worked for many years for Bank of America as an in-house ATM technician. (And it really bugs me when people say "ATM machine". What do you think the M stands for? You're saying "Automated Teller Machine machine", does that make any sense? People obviously don't think about that. http://media.ign.com/boardfaces/25.gif I guess our society is so used to acronyms that we don't bother to find out what they really mean.http://media.ign.com/boardfaces/33.gif )

I used to be able to completely tear down an entire ATM and rebuild it. AND train other people how to do it.http://media.ign.com/boardfaces/14.gif I was the only woman they had at the time that could do all that in that much depth and detail. http://media.ign.com/boardfaces/5.gif

Then I lost that job, not a happy story.http://media.ign.com/boardfaces/28.gif

I worked as a temp, for a company that built lasers for various applications, mostly for grocery store scanners and mundane things like that. They had a big lay off and had to let me go right before they were about to hire me full time.http://media.ign.com/boardfaces/15.gif

I was out of work for a year.http://media.ign.com/boardfaces/51.gif

I currently work for this company, M-Flex: http://www.mflex.com

I do solder inspection and touch up, and some hand assembly. I sit and solder under a microscope for 8-10 hours a day. http://media.ign.com/boardfaces/52.gif

I often take my smaller soldering projects to work and do them on my breaks, that way, I don't have to get out my soldering iron at home and I can use my microscope to inspect my own work. [:p]

I just did some soldering on LED saber parts this past week on my breaks Monday and Tuesday.</font id="blue"> </font id="size3"> http://media.ign.com/boardfaces/3.gif

I started working in High School at a Dinner/Theater then went on to Mickey D's. Then after Graduation and a short College career at East Carolina studying Music I became a Volkswagon Mechanic. I got tired of the grease so i went to work in a Body Shop that specialized in Corvettes then on to collision repair. After 15 years of working for others I decidied to torture myself with openning my own shop. So i Spend the day arguing with Firebird LOL (just kidding). I know how you feel man. Insurers have such tight guidlines these days it's really hard to make everybody happy. Body shop pay does sounds low in that area. Come on down south firebird most body men make 60g's plus here and there is a shortage of them. I have a couple of freinds doing the appraisal thing and they tell me they get $100 a claim but the catch is they don't get paid to write supplements (SUCKS). I Am trying to get into the real estate game alittle but it is super cut throat. It can be frustrating dealing with people when you're in a business that is based on people having some bad luck getting into an accident so guys like firebird and me get to be there whipping post. I 've painted so long now i'm probably going to do it for the duration. Although it is gratifying when you can help sombody out in a jam or get to do a custom paint job on a cool ride. That's enough about work

Hey Daj Nallig,

My waiter job was at the Long Beach Elks Lodge. My mom was a catering manager there and got the job for me. Waitering sucks!

What Jedi-Loreen didn't mention as a job was building EL blades for everyone in creation. IMHO she created the standard by which all EL wire based blades are built. I have 4 of her blades currently and although she is not doing orders anymore since she is tired of it and since others have borrowed [stolen] her process, they are still pretty much my favorites. Apologies to Tim, gentleman that he is, you are one of the few who either found out how to do it independently or at least give her credit for being a major developer.

Hey Alex;

I wish I lived closer and that my hands worked better, I would love to work with you. Since I can't I guess I will just have to recommend you to anyone who can't or doesn't want to build thier own hilts. Wanna move to SOCAL? I can get you loads of help [a lot of us would work for free] and there is a major market here for lightsabers....

Voila` In View, A humble vaudevillian veteran cast as both victim and villain by the vicissitudes of fate. This visage, no mere veneer of vanity is a vestige of the vox populi, now vacant, vanished. However, this valorous visitation of a bygone vexation stands vivified and has vowed to vanquish these venal and virulent vermin vanguarding vice and vouchsafing the violently vicious and voracious violation of volition. the only verdict is vengeance, a vendetta held as a votive not in vain, for the value and veracity of such shall one day vindicate the vigilant and virtuous. Verily, this vichyssoise of verbiage veers most verbose. So let me simply add that it's my very good honor to meet you and you may call me V.

I can't believe I haven't replied to this topic before. Up until my current job I was:

A stable hand at a horse boarding facility
An 0351 in the USMC
An oilfield downhole tool mechanic
A sheetrocker
A student

Currently, I am a Safety Specialist for Iowa State University. I am in charge of the accident investigations for incidents on campus, as well as development of a couple new safety programs I hope to have online by the end of the year. I work with a bunch of other people, and together, we handle EVERY aspect of safety, health and environmental for the University, including dealing with all the Federal regulations, Federal agencies (OSHA, EPA, USDA, etc).

When not doing that, I am a contract-employee to the highest bidder. I usually take on jobs where I need to set up computer networks or test the security of computer networks or audit code for different programs.

When not doing either of those jobs, I used to build lightsabers for people. I'm out of the business, as I think I reached my personal level of accomplishment and I get no more enjoyment out of it. I need to build my own personal saber as well as a saber for my girlfriend.

Well I have yet to tell everyone about me so here goes.

First job from the time I could push a mower and drive a tractor which was like 7 or 8 until I got a real job was indentured servitude for my parents. They owned 5 acres where we permanently lived which was Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. We kept it manicured which meant mowing it every week or more when needed. We also ranched something like 500 acres in the town where my parents were born. So I got to do all kinds of fun chores like rounding up cattle, administering shots and medicine, and turning young male cows into steers. Let's not get to far into that one. Between all of this I had little time for anything else.

From the approximate age of 17 till 18 I cleaned cars for Enterprise Rent-A-Car. I could vacuum, clean the windows, check the fluids, wipe down all the inside, gas it up, and fuel it in less than 10 minutes. It was all outside on asphalt, and I can remember weighing myself at the start and close of the day and there being a 10 pound weight loss from all of the sweating.

From 18 till 20 I worked for Sherwin Williams Paint Company in a local store. This was the greatest job ever, and I would still be there if it wasn't for the large money difference. We sold paint, wallpaper, and flooring. We had a great time inventing new games to play in the warehouse.

I graduated college at the age of 20 with a Bachelors degree in ultrasound. I have worked for several hospitals in Oklahoma City perfoming all manner of ultrasound exams. I currently work in a high risk obstetric clinic for the University of Oklahoma. I perfom ultrasounds for mothers with problems. The problems can be affecting the mother, the baby, or both. Needless to say I have seen my share of grief and sorrow when I have to deliver bad news about a mother's pregnancy. I know most people do not see a man doing ultasound, but I find it very rewarding and interesting. Also, the pay isn't that bad.

Well that is me. I hope I never sounded like I was boasting or anything like that. I just wanted everyone to know a little about background. I am enjoying getting to know everyone here, and I look forward to hearing about others on this forum.

high school - various grocery stores everything from bagging to cashiering

college first time - buss boy one semester, more grocery store work this time seafood, meat, deli departments

after college - worked for a full service music instrument retail store. started in a call center in the school music devision, then they moved me into inventory management in a couple of the stores. that company went bankrupt because of corporate mess.

I also run my own live sound company. Mainly now I just do some freelance mixing and coordinating of events when I can get the work.

Back in school full time as a single father this time so I am trying to not "work" as much as possible.

Okay, my turn.

My 1st taste of a real job was in high school where in the UK, we had a 1 or 2 week program called work experience. So for my experience I was sent to a local dealership garage called Enterprise. Being a huge Star Trek fan, you can imagine how much I was teased by my classmates about that.

After I graduated I went on to study basic engineering where I learned all the skills shown on the A-Team. (Welding, fabrication, milling, lathes,a little blacksmithing, electronics, technical drafting.) After graduation:

factory job cleaning up and leak testing aluminum parts for Lamborghini.
Machinist for a small engineering company.
Made floor pan carpets for Ford.
Propulsion Mechanic for the RAF.
I almost made team leader when I left the RAF and went to work for Denso UK but I moved to the US.
my 1st job in the US was as a fork lift driver transporting Ball canning jars around the plant.
Road Maintenance Coordinator ( AAA for Celadon trucks, all 1500 across the US and only 2 of us at night to help)
City Park maintenance.
Plastic Molding Specialist for Valeo making headlight assemblies for GM, Chrysler, Toyota, Ford and Honda.
mold setter at a plant making trim panels for Suberu
Freelance graphic designer for Jenn Entertainment. 2D, 3D, whatever, I love it.
and thats about it.

Currently I'm unemployed and still thinking of going to Full Sail in Orlando FL for animation, or the DAVE School also in Orlando FL simply because I use Lightwave which is what the DAVE school uses.

How long did it take you to learn which color tag to put on bread for certain days of the week? That's a cool trick.

If my paperwork goes through I'll be going into the Reserves and cross training as a Paralegal. Aside from that I'll be using my GI Bill to go to college full time.

Good night nurse. Take it outside with your sabers, you kids, and leave the forums clear.

Started as a dishwasher in a diner.
Then a retail sales monkey.
Then a server.
Then a telemarketer (for like a month.)
Then a server again.
Then I went to school and got a degree in Computer Networking. While there, I did an internship with the state as a junior sysadmin.
Now I'm local deskside support for the local branch of a multinational electrical engineering firm.

This thread isn't really about hobbies that you might make money doing, DJ. Or part-time jobs that let you afford to buy a car.

It's about the job you do that pays your rent and buys your food and clothes, pays for your child care and buys your saber parts.

I guess you wanted to feel like you were part of this thread.

Lets see. My brother calls me a jack of all trades a master of none. After high school I joined the army. I was stationed at Schoefield Barracks, HI. I was an anti tank gunner. I was trained at the time to fire a TOW missle system and blow up blow up a tank at 1750 meters. But what I really did was drive a hummvee for 3 years. After the army I got married and became a sub contractor. I worked for my father in law. I installed custom kitchen cabinets, custom closet selving, ceiling fans, storm doors, and custom window treatments. I then went to school for audio and recording engineering, my wife at the time didn't want to move so there went that idea. There's not a lot of big recording studios in Columbus Ohio. We got divorced I started welding at a plant. I then found a job at a live sound company. They did sound for corporate events. That wasn't fun. I sat behind a 36 channel mixing board to use 4 channels. 3 mics and cd player. There was actually more to it than that. I really enjoyed setting up. The events were lame. But that was basically it. I then started cooking for Hooters. I did that for about 6 years. I got married again, not to a Hooter Girl. Then I became a manager of Hooters. I did that for almost 2 years. That became very taxing on my family. I had to quit. While cooking and managing Hooters, I started tattooing partime. I quit Hooters and started cooking at Applebees. Hated that job. Very unprofessional. DON'T EAT THERE! My wife received a promotion at her job. So now I'm a full time Domestic Engineer, and tattoo privately part time.

P.S. Wow this long. I'm sorry.

Hear hear! I'm sure you don't custom for free (OR cheap), but it's amazing that you're able to do it at all, and it's a boon to the community, having a glassblower. :-)

Started out doing some volunteer work in high school working at the summer camps
Went to work at a portrait studio at 17
Got hired by my old high school as a (later as The) Network Tech
Had to quit to go to school in Indiana, got my BA in CompSci. Then of course the bubble burst...moved to Spokane.
Unable to get into my old job anymore, I worked online for a few months as a manager for an online game...the pay was only decent, but it was low stress...too low stress, I never left the house...
Finally got a car, after nagging every week for 3 months AND knowing someone on the inside managed to get a job shoveling popcorn at a movie theater...
Went on to drive as a logistics courier, it's a sweet job...get paid by the mile to drive computer parts to shops in trouble as fast as possible. But of course that was the summer gas hit $4 a gallon, and since you cover all your own expenses and use your own car...and you're on-call 24/7...no kind of social life, no kind of diet when you're in a seat all day with nothing but fast food for 300 miles...
Now I'm a security guard. Funny, the degree's only made it Harder to find work; the kinds of places that want it also want experience, and the kinds of places that will hire me without experience are scared I'll get a tech job and leave. -_-;
In my free time I sew, solder and mold (Alumilite is wonderful stuff), but I can't make any money on it. Alas, so say we all...;-D

Worked for a furniture moving company at 15, then at Outback steakhouse.

In college I worked for the maintenance crew, the library, the book store, the paint crew, and pizza hut.

Also did graphic design for local businesses who were forming a sort of small town cross promotion thing for the tourism bureau. that was good for one summer to pay rent.

got my BA in history (European concentration) and my minor in Anthropology. Got to do some really cool Archaeological digs over a few summers.

After college I got hired doing background checking and records keeping, which paid pretty well but I couldn't stand the work structure....no talking, eyes on the monitor, fingers moving...clock out at 12:30 exactly, clock in at 1:30 exactly. You can't keep working to finish up a project, and take a late lunch, you can't work through lunch to get a project turned in, then leave early. you can't stay late to finish an assignment. You can't send emails or chat, no matter how much work you get done.

They had a board showing how many files you get done in a day. Most people got 12-14 done in a day. I never had less than 25, and I still couldn't take a break or talk or do anything but keep working.

I left after a year.

Started working for the airline, taking a 3 dollar pay cut, but I've earned that back now, and then some, and I'm actually happy to come to work. Plus the Union guarantees our raises twice a year. That office job they "will try to give a raise based on performance and if the company can afford it."

Love my job now, but I am working on a second degree...BA in criminal justice. Looking at becoming a private investigator.

i work for one of the fastest growing Insurance Clearinghouses in the US (we deal in EDI, electronic data interchange transmissions of medical and dental claims between providers offices and the insurance.) I manage roughly 600 accounts and growing. My job is to do tech/customer support for each account (getting to know them personally, fix their problems, make sure they get paid etc.) I am over the entire western region which pretty much means anything west of the Mississippi.

All right, I'll bite...

My first "job" was as a summer camp counselor - I think I made like $1500 for the summer...
Then during college at MIT, I worked both in the campus health center autoclaving and sterilizing medical equipment and also in the business school's computer lab as tech support.
I spent a summer working at a deep discount investment firm.
I think that was the last job I had before I hit med school.
After that came internship (aka indentured servitude - if you count all the hours spent on call, the pay is actually less than minimum wage), residency (much better than internship, but still on call all the time), and finally fellowship (much nicer, but the pay still kinda sucked).

Now I'm a partner radiologist at a major healthcare system in SoCal, finally making a decent (and thankfully stable) living with decent working hours - allows me to do other things on the side like make sabers in my spare time and give Tim a good chunk of my $$$... ;)

I am an administrative assistant and grant administrator at the University of Pittsburgh. I exist mostly for our new lazy, micromanaging departmental administrator to decide what parts of HIS job he doesn't like and dump them on me, while funding my position through soft money from a project upon which I do not work. I do the work of a $60,000 job for $32,000 a year.

It's a pretty miserable job.

However, Pitt covers 50% of my tuition for graduate school, and I am currently in the MLIS program here, so hopefully by next July (July 2011) I'll be primed for work either in a library or IT position somewhere and can get out of here and never look back.

Put out serious applications now. Intern if you can. It sucks but it beats getting out and finding all the jobs want experience, and they can get it. -_-;
usajobs.gov seems like a good site, I haven't had any luck...but if you can make a resume there, you can make it anywhere.

I have lots of experience. When putting my portfolio together last semester, one of my instructors was blown away by my breadth of work experience, a great deal of which is applicable to the IS field.

Interning, unfortunately, isn't an option as for my program internships are all unpaid and my wife and I count on both salaries to pay the bills.

Did I mention I'm 35 and have been working full-time since I was 18? ;).

I work in the Prop-shops/Scene-shops at a lot of local performing arts theatres both, hourly and commission;
and I'm usually one of the lighting technicians at any one of the aforementioned theatres at any given point in time.
I'm also a freelance graphic artist/photograper/web coder with an internship for web design/network administration at the high school.
Other than that, I do whatever jobs I can land.

As a hobbyist I do a little software engineering, robotics, mechanical/structural engineering (i.e. inventing useless crap, because I can), ceramics, pyrotechnics, and audio/video production.
I'm currently wrapping up high school (in days), and moving on to certifications in EMT, General Contracting, Electrical, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and PHP.
With those done I'll be getting my Gen. Ed. taken care of to go to school for Graphic Design or Culinary.

It would seem that the only continuity in my interests, is that I do everything, and enjoy it.

I've been a cube farmer for longer than I'd like to admit.

Everything I've done can be boiled down to Customer Service, or as the Irish like to say, "Telling someone to go to Hades in such a way as they'll look forward to the trip."

thanks to my job history I now know:
- designer eyeglass manufacture and distribution
- the contruction industry
- how to get someone passed out drunk in 2 drinks
- that modeling for art classes is both harder and easier than expected
- children's parties are really gatherings for hellspawn
- disposible circumcision kits come with instructions FOR A REASON
- what to do when a tanker of cyanide spills all over the highway
- OSHA (shudder)
- copier parts
- "that book about the bunny. I think the cover was blue"
- The reason why a certain car company is #1. And it might have something to do with checking your soul in a cubby before you get to your desk in the morning.
- clinical trials on toenails and homeless people
- just exactly why no matter how busy or BIG of a person you are, never have your secretary read ALL of your emails (or you get a ***ual harassment suit)
- the pros/cons of having a unionized job

And now in my spare time I'm going to school for medical billing/coding. because I'd like to do something normal for a living.

Just got out of the Marine Corps after 8 years as a Staff Sergeant (E-6) due to disability caused by a deployment in 2004.

I now work at the Joint Operational Support Airlift Center (JOSAC) on Scott Air Force Base in Illinois. I schedule mission essential and executive Department of Defense (DoD) air travel for the Continental United States (CONUS). I worked here as the IT/Project Manager for 3 years (during my final 3 years in the Marine Corps) before transitioning to a civilian career as an executive scheduler. I was unable to retain my previous position due to the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) program that 'attempts' to save the government money by eliminating all 'non-essential' positions. You may have recently heard that the Joint Forces Command (JFCOM) is being closed down by Secretary Gates. This is as a result of the BRAC program. Saving tax-payers money, one destitute family at a time.

Anybody notice that this thread was started in 2006?
Then again, it's not a topic that gets old, is it?

I've worked as:

a dishwasher (high school)
a "quality control inspector" (high school)
a dishwasher again (college)
an English tutor (briefly, as an exchange student)
a babysitter (junior high through college)
a translator of manga (Japanese comics, since 1990)
a T.A. in anthropology and Asian studies (grad. school)
a freelance writer/columnist (mostly about manga, in both English and Japanese)
a university Japanese instructor (after finishing by my M.A. in Asian Studies)
a university instructor (pop culture, Japanese society, manga--sometimes in English but mostly in Japanese)
a third-rate sabersmith, trying to advance to second-rate

It's incredible what a diverse bunch of people we have here, all joined by a common interest in a majorly geeky hobby that most people don't even know exists.
