posting this for anyone who wants to post there work areas. I'm interested in seeing what type of conditions everyone is working in, tools, storage methods, organizing, etc anything that makes a little space that you do all your saber building in is welcome!

hear is a look at mine

Ok, I'll chime in.

I work on my sabers in 2 places:

My garage -- this is where all the really messy stuff happens and it doesn't matter because it's already a mess!

http://www.hax-revolution.com/download/files/DSC01943.jpg

My (home) office -- this is where I do all the soldering, assembly, photos, and posts ;) NOTE: It's normally not quite this disorganized.

defiantly more space then mine. and the benefit of doing the heavy work in your garage is nice. i cant do the heavy stuff after 8~9 because people sleep around those hours here. so that's unfortunate for me. it also appears your fresh out of paper towels ^^. something my workspace is missing is a power supply. I'm thinking of taking a computer power supply and a cheap mutl-meter and make a bench top power supply for experimenting and LED testing

Hey DX, I like how the spirit of Boba Fett is looking over your work area. The head at least.
I also see you are working on your curved sith hilt. Am I right? I know you've been wanting a
Dooku style hilt. I like the bench. You should paint it black with red detail like your costume.

I have 4 in the works, a pair for the GF, and a pair for myself. I have the Dooku anyway.

I am going to try to get them more looking like the Komari Vosa/Assaj Ventress than the ones coming out. I like the original round renders of them.

Updated inside workbench and pics will come for the garage one when the lathe/press is in

Finally cleaned my shop up so I could take some pics. The shop is a 10'x10'x10' wood storage shed that I built myself, earlier this year from a kit (with help now and then of course, on the parts that could not be lifted by one (weak) man alone). I completely redesigned the floor frame as I needed the floor to be very solid and able to take a lot of weight. I also redid the "loft" and put the horizontal roof beams much higher.

I work on the electronics at my computer desk, not in this shop.

The first 4 pics were taken with me holding up a camcorder's wide angle lens to my digital camera. That's why they look blurry at the edges. All pics are clickable.

The shop:

The lathe/mill combo (I don't use the mill part of it):

The bandsaw:

Below is a pic of my grinder and my Uncle's scroll saw. The grinder runs off a motor that was from either a washer or dryer. I've had it since I was 17 or 18... which would be 1986 or '87. Still works great though. Of course I've had to replace the belt a few times.

I think I used the scroll saw many years ago on some wood but have not used it since I put it in my shop. In fact right now, it does not have a blade.

My Harbor Freight lathe cost me less than some of my lightsabers. This is part of why I am always confused that some with GREAT skills still do not lathe some of their own parts.

No offence to Tim intended, but some have the skills to make amazing things on a lathe and simply choose not to in favor of MHS with overlays.

Mind you my lathe is not the MOST precise thing on the planet, but we are not manufacturing M-16s, we are making glorified flashlights with "blades".

What a perfectly pointed comment.

It's not the machine that is costly. It's all the tooling that goes with it. Sure, you can get a Harbor Freight lathe for cheap, but add up:

Quick-change tool post
Cutting tools with indexed cutters and replacements
Dial indicators, dial calipers, micrometers, feeler gauges, depth gauges
Center drills
Assorted drills with correct shank
Boring tools
Steady rest, follower rest
Lathe dog

...and your cost skyrockets. You are correct that many of us (I am including myself in this, since your description is accurate) do not lathe our own parts. One factor is the cost of the machinery and associated tooling. Another is choosing to patronize businesses like TCSS instead of trying to do everything in-house to maximize profit. Yet another is lack of desire to add yet another thing to the repertoire that takes time away from family and friends.

I "could" go buy a lathe and all the associated tooling and start making my own parts. I "could" stop buying from TCSS and make everything I need myself. I "could", but I won't.

Jedi-Loreen
04-09-2010, 01:52 PM
You can make what you want to, Lance, but don't put down others who like to use MHS parts as a canvas, because that's what it sounds you're doing, to me.

Sidd

Why dont we get the thread back on track?

Darth Xanthus
04-09-2010, 02:56 PM
Yeah, and please do not read into what I say to add your own thoughts about what I may be saying against you or TCSS.

I fully support TCSS, I insult nobody in my comment.

As for the costs.....

Live center was $70ish dollars, assortment of bits @ $5 each, Milling bits a little more. Cheap calipers $5. DONE

Now here is for the BS on profit.

I have REFUSED to sell to MANY people already in that my skills do not produce a saber I would be happy in buying. At the same time I have fixed, or had to have fixed, or have fixes scheduled for most of the sabers I have bought, and most of them have been MHS. No, I am NOT making things by hand for profit over buying from TCSS. I am making things by hand for the love of creating these things. I also BUY FROM those who make MHS sabers, and ask Tim, I also buy MHS parts from time to time when it's a project I do not want to lathe entirely.

Can a comment not agree with yours and not have to be over-reacted to? I mention the cost of a lathe and you plumb lose your minds!

My opinion is that the MHS was a great starting point for me, but I want to machine sabers, and there are others that are in the same boat. I have GIVEN AWAY more sabers than one could afford to if all were $100+ in materials on the hilt alone.

Now, as was stated, back to the topic at hand, if you dislike what I say and have maturity PM me, if you lack that start a flame post on FX or something.

Ingchao
04-10-2010, 06:11 PM
I'm with you DX. I'm about to "get lathed' myself.:p
And I'm know there are TCSS parts that I will never ever come close to in quality/design. But I love to make my own stuff as much as possible. And a lot of us-myself included, owe most of their saber building skills to this forum. So big props to Tim!
And with that said, there is major overreaction to a lot of posts here and very little tolerance for noobs. Keep in mind the depth of info contained here and a search can be majorly confusing-especially for someone with limited forum/computer experience. And if it weren't for the high quality and one-stop shopping in the store here, that would turn a LOT of noobs elsewhere.

Lord Dottore Matto

Okay folks. This discussion is over. I am not asking, I am telling you. DX is not a n00b, so I am not sure how Ingchao's post is relevant to this case. That said, n00b flaming has been curtailed and will continue to be. Finally, a discussion of how "we" can make our own parts is in poor taste on THIS particular forum, so lets keep that to the appropriate venue please. This is the last I expect to see of this derail.

12X16! That's the size of my living room.

I was on my desk where I also keep my computer and and do paperwork, until I started to practice cutting and drilling a sink tube. We don't wear shoes inside the house and was picking metal splinters out of my feet for two days.

So I just finished building a little folding work bench in a 2 foot deep by 5 foot wide corner of my tiny garage. Had to make it folding so I can get my car in and out.

I used this web page to build it:

http://www.diynetwork.com/diy/cda/howto_print/0,1000871,DIY_33159_2143_HOWTO-PRINT-DETAIL,00.html

The instructions lack details but it's easy enough to figure it out.

Thanks for the link, I may use that to build a secondary workstation in my basement.

UPDATE! Oct 5 2010

ok. so its not all that fancy, no drill press lathe or CNC or anything like that. *i wish i had those* but a fairly decent improvement over the night-stand workspace. the original desk was that crappy fiber board that was sitting out in the weather for way to long literally set a soda on the thing and it broke. so i replaced it with a nice peace of ply wood. and use it for working on stuff. got quite the upgrade in power supply. my uncle gave that one to me. however it wasn't long before the poor ~70 year old transformer started to go out on me... it has 4 others for the other voltage settings and such. but the main one (0-40 v. the one that's most useful) went out on me...
so i plan to get a newer modern day one asap. was wanting to replace the transformer for this beast. but when Google seys there's nothing found when i type in the product number and specifications of the transformer. its not gonna happen.

also got quite the addition to tools and random trinkets to use making things

those boxes and totes on top of the mini fridge contains tuns of Missourians things ranging from peaces of quarts to a ray gun from an old CRT

Thats a nice set up for you. A drill press and a good vice and dremel set up will complete it for most DIY apps. That little wooden box on the mini fridge, I like it. I am a sucker for cool wooden boxes:D Also, that guitar hanging above on the wall, I had that exact one when I was a kid. I found it in an abandoned house and took it apart. I still have the neck:D

Me too! I've found some really cool ones at cigar stores. They usually sell empty boxes for like $1 each.

it has been a while. i have moved to a new apartment. and haven't been to heavy into DIY, mostly because i don't have a proper "work" place. unlike my grandpas house i don't have luxeries such as going out to the garage for a drill-press and also, the whole apartment thing. so iv decided to build a simi-mobile workbench to get rolling on projects agan! its got to be something i can move in/out easy. so. i spent some time on sketchup and this is what i came up with.

http://i.imgur.com/l5zjE7e.png

the top half is detachable. the legs of the workbench are recycled from an old computer desk. ones shown aren't the exact legs. the ones used are vertical normal legs so it will hold a lot more weight.
the sketch up is just the general design. looking forward to seeing updates to your guys's workspace or those who havn't posted please feel free. want some ideas!

still working on the light. the one i had bought didn't come with a cord. and is meant for solid core, so i'm looking for a different light unit.

with a few minor design changes. it turned out BETTER than planned.. (uncommon)

and the final product! can't believe i didn't do this much earlier. was MUCH easier than i had expected. and the project only costed $140~ overall, after all this was sed and done. i found that harbor freght sells kits to build your own for only $100.. however the quality is nowhere near the good ole wood. the kit was made of super-thin stamped steel. so i'm glad i did my own from scratch. for those living in apartments or low on space. its a great alternative to the full-size workshop!

eventually ill be looking at getting a mini drill-press/lathe but that's a ways down the road.

PS: can't wait ot see other peoples shops/benchs! please share!

I decided to post a few pics of my work area. I am currently moving it from my room ( large bungalow room at back of parents rental home) into our huge 4 car garage (used for storage of junk). Sadly we rent, and have to move in 8-12 months time as they are demolishing the home to rebuild units. But it will suit my needs for now. Yes I also currently have 3 custom builds on the go at once :) Front one is an idea of a Jedi relic for a workmate, the back two are my own Sith customs. Juggling my hobby with work and study means it takes a long time to complete anything.

sorry for the super slow responce. but yes. it is indeed a Frankenstein power supply. it used to be a wireless radio supply for a local collage. but it was retired and somehow my uncle got a hold of it. he than passed it on to me. however it shortly died. the "resin" or whatever goop on the transformers was liuquifieing. the paper caps where losing there electrolytes so i gutted it (as much as i didn't want to) and just put a computer PSU in it.
