View Full Version : My new MHS "Divum Insisto" **Work in Progress**

Hey everyone. I've been working on my second MHS saber. This one's called "Divum Insisto." It's the second saber I've made myself. It was inspired by Qui-gon, Obi-wan, and Luke ROTJ. I'm pretty excited with how it's coming along. I've been practicing with my dremel and this saber has really proved to be a challenge for me. It's my first double overlay. It's 11 1/4" from end to end.

I wanted to post progress pics up showing what I've finished so far. I'll be adding accent leds to various places on the hilt and I've got a machined red knob on its way. I'm hoping (like everyone else) to get my hands on a CF when Erv releases his next month. I'll keep this thread updated as I get more done.

Here are the parts I used:

BH-18 (powder coated by Tim)
ribbed extension (pc'd by Tim)
5" double female extension (custom grooves and pc'ing by Tim)
Pommel 4 (pc'd by Tim)
TCCS Sinktube
Aluminum tube
Vintage Graflex clamp

Here are some pics:

Here's one to gauge the size.

Sorry for the half a million pics, but I'm pretty excited. (In case you couldn't tell) ;)

I'll start adding accent leds, button head screws, the red knob, etc. soon. Stay tuned!!!

That's some nice work on the overlays.

But the Graflex clamp kind of ruins the whole saber for me, it looks very out of place and I don't think it belongs on this saber.

I say if your going to have accent leds put them under the clamp and use a bouble strip, its got clean lines so becarefull what you add to it cause it could ruin it.

And I kinda agree with jlo on the clamp, It does look out of place but yet it doesent.

i have to agree with J-lo on this one. I love that over lay but the clamp makes it look really off. over all A+ work.

Thanks for the comments and critiques guys. I actually like the clamp. It really fits for me.

"Darth Astronimus - Dang that is nice. how long it take you to make that? I hope mine comes out as good when i finish it.Great Job."

^^^ Thanks. The overlays took me a while to do. I was successful on my first attempt, but it took a good couple of hours of filing with various jewelry hand files to get it to this point. I'm really happy with the way it turned out though.

Here was my original design from the MHS builder.

It's pretty close. I made a few changes to it, like the second overlay, but it's still basically how I'd originally planned. I actually like it better with the second overlay. A lot better. :D

Overlays are so very good. where is the switch going to go? in the clamp? I like the Graflx clamp, but it's odd being so low, up against the pommel. might be more aesthetically pleasing if you added a gear or something after the clamp. But, of coarse, the most import thing is that you like it. And you did a killer job!

Thanks! I plan on getting a CF for it. I'd like to put the activation switch up near the emitter, like in the render, and the auxiliary switch would be behind the graflex lever. If I can't get the switch to work up near the emitter then I'd put a momentary switch beneath the card on the graflex clamp like I have in my ROTJ V2.

I like the clamp being so low. It seems right to me. It also makes the saber easier for me to hold.

Looks great, but it does bring up a question that pertains to my own upcoming saber as well. How do you feel, practically, about having the grip where you do(lower to mid hilt)? My original hilt design called for the same thing, but it seemed to me that it would be a bit awkward in action, as neither hand would actually be utilizing the grip fully. This may, however, be peculiar to my use, as I am accustomed to kendo, where the left hand needs to be at the very bottom of the hilt in order to provide maximum leverage. Still, thought I'd ask.

Still, looking forward to seeing the end result.

That's a nice looking saber. However the hilt looks a bit to much over 1.5 OD (for the main grip area) for my tastes.

Thanks. I'm not familiar with different styles (although I'd like to learn someday), but I like to have my left hand low on my sabers when I hold them. This one feels good in my hand. The base of my thumb joint rests comfortably on the side of the clamp box and my fingers wrap around nicely. I get a good, strong, comfortable grip. Here's a pic:

Thanks for the compliment. Actually the hilt diameter at the main grip is about 1/32 below 1 5/8". It may look big in the pictures, but believe it or not, it's barely bigger than 1.5 OD

It feels really nice in the hand. Remember, this is a "little guy" lol. The saber is only 11 1/4" from end to end, so that may make it appear heftier than it really is. :)

First, I gotta say that I love the design.
I prefer shorter hilts like yours, and the design is just solid.
Killer.

The graflex clamp seems to be at an odd angle for me, as I would have my left hand around that, but that would mean rotating the entire saber in your right hand about 30-45 degrees. Still, sick saber, dude.
What kind of LED do you have planned for it?
This looks like a Blue saber, or an Amber one.

Mind if I ask what kind of Aluminum tubing you used? I picked some up from a metal yard a few months ago, but the ID is off far enough that it doesn't fit a sinktube and the OD is too big for a comfortable grip.

I am not he, but I ordered 17 gauge 1 5/8" OD aluminum tubing and it fits my sinktube like a glove.

Hey Jasten

Really good work fella, I like the idea of the clamp being at the bottom of the saber as I don't like them slap bang in the middle.

The over/over lays are really nice too and actually add to the saber in comparison with your render.

From here on be subtle as you don't want to go over board.

Someone mentioned blue and amber led as suiting this saber, I really think amber. Not Dark (red) and not Light (blue and green).

Thanks a lot Eco! I really like the shorter sabers. I try and keep all of my sabers under 11 1/2". Anything bigger just isn't comfortable for me.

As for the LED color, I'm deciding between Green and Royal Blue. I've already got two blue sabers, so I'm leaning slightly towards the green. I want to use a tri-rebel GGW setup, or BBW, so I can get the white flash on clash. I've seen that in a few sabers and I love it.

Thanks guys! Yeah, I'm gonna be careful not to go overboard. I've got a few aesthetically pleasing accent leds planned for it. Other than that, it's just the red anodized activation knob and a really nice polish job. Should be sweet when I'm finished.

I took a couple of pics while I'm waiting on misc. parts for this saber. I'm using my other sabers to help me decide on blue or green for the blade. I really like both. Any opinions?

But the orange led I got from BR would make it look killer!

Blue .....I think the green is drawn to only because its the same color of the saber that inspired that emitter......

Your Dremel-fu is strong! Like this saber I do. Watch with interest I will.

If it were mine, I would put a blue P4 in it, but I would like to see what it looks like with something like a bin 4 amber or orange.

im usually one to be different ( my fav is green), but in this case i agree with the majority here. Blue really offsets the black hilt sections, making a really menacing and elegant saber. very nice

Go for blue, or maybe even royal blue. And if you can't get your hands on a CF, just get a US 2.5 from here, better than nothing right? plus alot cheaper too. cool hilt!

But the Graflex clamp kind of ruins the whole saber for me, it looks very out of place and I don't think it belongs on this saber. I agree with J-Lo, having the clamp on there just kinda, erks me... It's just out of place if you ask me... But I must say, I am absolutely IN LOVE with the rest of the saber... With a blue AV switch, and a nice CREE blue LED... maybe a Petit Crouton/ CF, this could
be SO AMAZING!!!!!
