View Full Version : emitter confusion...

I just received my emitter, and other saber parts. I was all set to get started when I noticed that I'd make a typical doofus mistake and forgotten to order the sink tube adapter for the MHS. I have a couple questions on this.

1. is it absolutely neccessary to have the adapter for the sink tube (1.5 inch)? or can I just drill set screws past the threaded part on the emitter? I had the emitter machined to fit inside the sink tube.

2. in the sink tube, with the MHS emitter, provided I didn't need the adapter, do I still need to attach the heatsink to the bottom of the emitter as shown in the LED hilt tutorial? in the MHS the threads inside seem to hold the heatsink in place, but the sink tube is obviously smooth, so I figured I'd have to do something to keep it from sliding around in there.

The MHS to sink tube adapter is mainly to hold the led holder/heatsink to the bottom of the emitter.

After about 4 or 5 orders. You will get a couple "Another box? how much crap are you getting?" Eventually she will just shake her head and ignore it.[;)]

Or of course you can do like I did and get her new livingroom furniture, flooring, and paint[:D]

well at least now there's light on the horizon. she's going to eat her words though, because she doesn't realize I'm building the saber for HER lol. she's always been a huge fan of Asajj Ventress and that's what I'm making it. I've just been hiding my procedures so well she thinks I'm building yet another one for myself or one of my friends.[;)]

The trick to keeping the wife happy is to occasionally order a box with something for her in it then she doesn't mind the boxes you get and I can tell you it is cheaper than new paint and floors.[:D]

Yea, I have done the flowers at work thing a few times.
I think what would really make her happy is if I built a saber that went on Ebay or sold locally. She has been concerned with the amount of sabers I have made and I have done them out of pocket.

I have been married for 21 years and I have learned how to keep the wife happy, take out the trash and put the toliet seat down. Or if you must sell a saber on Ebay.[:(]

Congrats on 21 years. I think I may put the green LED on ebay and see how it goes. We havn't takin' that one out to dual yet. I was also planning on putting my saber staff on Ebay when it is done, right now I am trying to decide if I should fire both LED's off of one spst switch when they both have their seperate battery packs.

For your staff it would be cooler to have two switches to light the blades one at a time. The sabers I have sold on Ebay have done ok and I have made a few dollars on each one, some more than others. There really isn't much money to be made with MR sabers, there are two many of them, but custom sabers do well.

I have played with a few paint ideas but nothing I really like. I am thinking of just letting it go like this and finnish it up.

Yea Lan I knew you had me by a few years, even though we are the same age. I just waited longer to get married, you know that probably makes us the oldest guys on this forum. James the saber looks good, I am waiting for the new emitters before I build my first mhs saber, besides I have several projects yet to do first.[:D]

james3, very nice hilt. what's the total length?

james3
05-03-2006, 09:29 PM
Tip to tail 23 and 13/32".

I started off with the idea that Ray Park gave the prop makers when they made his staff. He wanted it so his hands would be about the width of him, so I kinda did the same thing and then started putting pieces together untill I got the length I wanted. Every time I worked up a paint idea for it I would cover it in wrap and do a quick spray to see if I liked it, nothing really got me so I think I am going to put the electronics in and start her up.

Married for 13 years. 4th marriage. If you really want to keep your wife happy if you are doing sabers, ask her advice. "Honey, what do you think of this emitter? Do you think I should add more O rings? How does that balance feel? Get her involved. That doesn't mean you have to USE her advice, but always ASK for it anyway. Flowers work too, but presents are better!

I mostly grumble under my breath ["I'm too old for this S**T!]

I keep saying that and then I go up against these 20 year old kids in my saber class. I tell them "Take it easy on the old man" and then I whip thier butts. I guess I do alright for a 54 year old.

Well it is nice to now that I am not the oldest guy here, only 47. It is good to let the wife think she is part of the process, it makes things quieter around the house. [:D]

i agree, get the wife involved. mine likes to dress up in costumes, thatgroup pic of us in my sig, she made that herself, not the best around, but it was her first shot. she did help me sew up my jedi robe that i made myself, shes good on a sewing machine. very helpfull in that regard. she had me make her her own saber once, it broke, it was a wierd style. had jewels on it, you could take them off to sell in case you needed money, that was the premise for the saber. not real jewels of course, lol and the top had a removeable emmittier that allowed her to choose different types to put on. if ya remember the academy game you had different emmitters, fencing, etc..... kinda borrowed on that idea.

i guess since im into the led sabers now i need to redo that saber in a lux version. that would tickle her to death. yeah, thats a great idea. im gonna start designing that soon.

You are lucky Lan, the wife wants no part of my madness as she calls it. I still ask her opinion just to keep peace on things but mostly she just rolls her eyes.[:D]

Now that I'm back living at my mom's house again, I have some of the same issues that you guys have with your wives, with my mom. Especially when she sees the mess on my craft project table that usually has several different projects going on at the same time.

But she'd rather have me building sabers and doing leather work and other craft projects than some of the other self-destructive things I used to do in the past.[xx(]

She does think the stuff I make is cool [8D] and she wishes she had some of the talent for making things that I do! [:D]
