I have not found any topics with this question so forgive me if it has been covered but, has anyone used sideglow fiber optics or even basic fiber optics bunched together? does it work?

The side glow fiber optic cable could work as a blade but the cost of the cable is fairly high, which prohibits buying some for a test. I have considered it and may yet spend the money to test it out. It would have to be incased in a poly-c blade and you would want a 1" diameter poly-c tube to get a good core effect. The basic fiber optic cable does not emmitt light well through the sides of the cable just the ends.

[?], can you not scroll down? there are two topics already in this forum with Fiber Optics in the title just at the bottom.[:0]

My rule of thumb is if you say this "I have not found any topics with this question so forgive me if it has been covered but..." or anything like it means you really didn't look at all. With a great search function and the two threads here already I call BS.

If you buy Side Glow as A diffuser, Do you think it will work and or be worth it? Do you also have to buy a specific color.
The Idea sounds great.

The sideglow that's been available hasn't fit very well in the blades we are used to using.

Ultra mentioned on another forum thought that he found a fiberoptic diffuser (no specifics on if it's a sleeve or wire) that he likes and will start offering.

Yeah, I wasn't too impressed by the video... it's hard to tell a difference. I guess that's good... but on the other one I saw with the corbin film blade I couldn't tell a difference either. :?

I give much more cred to seeing it in person. It's the best bet if you want the solid look.

It's funky... it almost gives a neon outer glow. That's why the Luke looks that way. Not unexpected though once Ultra said it's actually acetate (fiber optic is just a buzz word). You could make a similar blade from PolyP, mylar, etc...

Dregan
12-27-2006, 01:27 PM
I agree - it's a neon-tube like effect. I really like it. It's what I'm putting on any saber I plan on keeping. I wonder if you couldn't do the same with high-tranmissivity mylar as well. Of course, I don't know where to get that in less than whole-role quantities, but it'd be fun to try...

On a side note, the polycarbonate tube portion of the one Ultra shipped me is marred, seemingly in the material itself. I haven't emailed Ultra about it yet because (a) I realize that this time of year is hectic, at the best of times and (b) it's gonna get beat to h*ll anyway. Eventually I'll order a 'for show only' blade.

xwingband
12-27-2006, 02:04 PM
I don't like it for all colors... because it's the opposite. Actually "neon tubes" are darker at the edges.

Well said Tim, Ultra's blade is just a tube with film in it, not fiber optic. He could get sued for false advertising.

Hello, guys I'm new to the forums here and have been reading up on the forums and FAQ, and came across this thread. I have used a piece of side-emitting fiber-optic cable in my lightsaber's blade. I used a 3/4" polycarb tube and put in a piece of 14mm cable. It works fairly well, but the blade is heavy and since it is fiber-optic cable, the ends still transmit most of the light, so I get the dreaded "light-bulb" effect with the blade tip. This saber runs a 1-watt cyan Luxeon LED with a Hasbro QG soundboard. You can see some pics of my saber's blade here. (http://www.saberknights.com/members/jay-gonjinn/LuxSaberGallery.htm)

Jay-gon Jinn

I didn't turn it myself, but I had a lot of input into it's design. It was made by a friend of mine who does some custom machined sabers in his spare time.

great work man! 8)
that hilt is pure beauty. as for the blade, you might try putting something reflective into the tip like we do here to get rid of the lightbulb. but for just a one watter, that thing looks bright :P

Jay-gon Jinn

I actually have a mirrored acrylic disk that fits under the blade tip, but it makes it worse, not better, even with hole we drilled through it to light the blade tip. The first pictures on the webpage are a 1 watt cyan running off the hasbro board. I did have a green three watt in it until a couple days ago, when it suddenly went out. It now has a blue 1 watter in it.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the kind words! I now have pics up of the fiberoptic blade with the blue LED installed. You can see them here. (http://www.saberknights.com/members/jay-gonjinn/LuxSaberGalleryPage2.htm) You'll have to scroll the page down to see the new pics. Or click here (http://www.saberknights.com/members/jay-gonjinn/LuxSaber-blue-4.jpg)to see a quick pic! I still have a problem with the blade dimming in the middle. I don't think there's much that can be done to fix it, either. This type of fiberoptic cable is intended to have a light source at either end, or looped back into a light source.

heres something that seemed to help on mine, i got a shouldered tip from corbin, and used the reflective film under it.

the shoulders go inside of the poly c tube thus the light coming up hits the edges of that tip and shines enough up through it to light up the tip just enough.

it does work a lil bit, and you dont have to drill no hole that way.

worth a try anyways.

Oh Man! That is a friggin nice saber. Do you mind if order one similar from RS? :P Just joking...

Jay-gon Jinn
01-16-2007, 10:43 AM
The blade does have a shouldered tip on it, and any reflective material I've put in the tip creates that 'lightbulb' look because the optic cable is just as bright at the tip-end of the cable as it is at the emitter. I have a piece of paper in there, between the cable and the mirror to help tone it down some. It's just the nature of the side-emitting cable, I guess, or the particular brand of it that I have...I don't even know what brand it is, actually!

enolmano: Sure, I'll send you the prints! :P Just joking!

xwingband
01-16-2007, 10:56 AM
Unless you were afraid of blinding someone it'd seem that omitting any reflective tip would be best. It does seem to magnify the bulbing.
