How to make complicated renders?

I've seen some complicated lightsaber renders with overlays and all, such as sorain's signature, and some others. i was about to pm him but i lack posts to be able too. since there are others besides him who have done it, i would just ask it here: how?
or are they made from a different program entirely?

Before the MHS builder app here was perfected the renders used in it were available in template form for us to download and many of us used those templates to create custom configs by hand copy-and-pasting parts together in MS Paint. We also could edit the template parts pixel-by-pixel to create new custom parts and fancy overlays etc. At least that was how I would come up with fancy or complicated saber designs and renders.

hmm thanks. where do i download the template? if its on that thread just tell me which page its on. hmm why does "perfecting" the MHS remove the features?
