There is a huge difference between GIMP and Photoshop, but nothing you'd see for doing rotoscoping.

Thanks Devilstar2k2, that's a cool effect. I gotta try this GIMP thing you guys are talking about. Steve, what do you mean "raw". Are you talking about TIFF vs JPEG, in other words, uncompressed? Or you ask about the different immages I used to compose? Each one of these pics is made up of 3 photograps and 4 additional layers - 2 for each lightsaber.

yes, the pic without the saber effect added yet. And LDS, you didn't use transfer modes. Change the mode of the glow layers to screen.

Once you have the lightning done.. play with the layer settings to get it to merge with your pic in a way that fits your needs.

There are other ways, but this one is simple and cool... I believe photoshop has plugins.. but hey, this way you learn how to do it. [:D]

steve and LDS, thanks a lot! I managed to do it both in GIMP and Photoshop using the same method (difference and clouds and playing with the layers). Now I need to keep trying until I find the perfect lightning bolt.

In Photoshop.. run the difference clouds, and then use ALT+F...

This will repeat the filter for as many times as you need to get the texture you are looking for. Photoshop is awesome and I love the keyboard short cuts...
