The most interesting part is that there's no break in the light.

Hence the reason we want to know how to build it!!!;-)

my theory

The electronics are in one one end and the staff is one piece. Nylon perhaps?
I have circled in the pic where it is.

This might be a fun project. I may try this.

Yeah, what is up with that staff?! Pretty cool stuff!
Makototsai usually is known for his string of LEDs... The light is relatively uniform along the whole length, which leads me to believe that this is also the case here. The only thing is, where is the power source? If there's no sound, then that simplifies things tremendously.

I build a long 1.8m led strip blade~
and put the battery from end to end.
just like that:

it is not too hard, just the long pvc tube that is not get easily~:p

Nice work! I'm guessing that having the battery at both ends really simplifies the weight distribution.

Very cool! A quarterstaff for Tron. :D

I really like the look of the naginata style weapons too. The short blade looks great as they're moved about.

yes~this design that make the staff use and play easily.:D

Nice!

Find it in a pinkish color, and that would make an awesome Gambit staff as well.

Favourited!!!

I am so building one of these!!!

And my love of the halberd has just grown even more. though why no one has done a green one yet confuses me.... guess the one in my fanfilm will have to go green...

That staff is way too bendy, but I love the other two. It's like a lightspear.

DUDE!!!! that would be so cool! shorten it to about 2.5 to 3 feet and it would be the BOMB of a rave!

I was looking at Makototsai's LED String tutorial and I have a question. I am fairly new to this, but I thought about making some lightstaffs for my kids to carry at halloween. Seems better than a glow stick. Any way, I am assuming that is the 60 LED String, i am curious about your resistors. How much R did you need for that? My kids would love these...Thanks in advance.

Hi Jeff... obviously I'm not Mako, but... glad you're here at TCSS! You're a legend in this business, that's for sure. :) Yoda mentions you all the time when I see him in person...

Anyhow... as near as I understand things--it depends on:

* Your battery solution
* Amount of LEDs
* LED voltage & current rating (and if you're willing to "push" them)
* Whether you're planning on wiring in series... in parallel or... sera-lel, lol... (a mixture of the two)

There are also other factors... such as making certain each LED is at least CLOSE to "the same" specification as all its brothers & sisters, lol... otherwise you get some sort of dimmer ones, and others that stick out like sore thumbs because they're brighter.

But... this is avoidable by larger orders (much like asking Lumileds for 1000 Bin [whatever] Royal Blues), or by testing each LED that goes into a particular weapon.

Ultimately though--certain red LEDs are perfect @ just around 3v... so a 1.5v + 1.5v solution (as Mako shows here)... is quite simple and it probably wouldn't require any resistors. :) At least... that is my guess.

So in theory, if I ran 25 3v Reds in Series with the setup the Mako put up I should only need 3v of power and no resistance?

Make that parallel, and yes, probably.
in series you would need 25x3v=75v battery pack.

As far as i know, they usually wire about 60 LED-Resistor combo's in parallel, so one resistor per LED, so should a LED die, the rest wont get killed by the sudden overflow
(this may not be a problem if only one LED dies, but in time, the rest will be killed..)

As it is... I'm waiting for someone to come on as "Novastarman" or "Nova" or whatever, lol. Or someone to be "Ervin" or "Irvin", etc. etc. lol

I was looking at an LED calc and found this for setting up an array of LEDs, much like Mako's lightstaff. Wondered if this is the right path?

http://led.linear1.org/led.wiz

I used:

6V
3.2 Fwd V
30 mA
25 LEDs
