I have been keeping an eye on some new emerging technology namely ultracapacitors they have a lot of benefits:

1- Recharge time of 45 to 90 seconds
2- 500,000 charge cycles
3- no chemical reaction unlike all batteries
4- low to no discharge over extended periods of time
5- can be configured to a constant current (ie a steady 750ma to drive rebel led)

the only downside that i can see so far is like all first gen batteries they are a lower capacity and would run down very quickly in a saber, still its a good idea to keep in mind for the future.

Yeah I'm tempted to pick up one of the coleman cordless screwdrivers, gut it, and use the existing circuit to build a prototype, (kinda like my first led saber) they have some kind of funky charge system going on so it would be better to play it safe and use the charger that comes with the screwdriver to build that sucker.

That's a good idea. Will it fit in a MHS hilt?

Dont know yet but it fits in a handheld cordless screwdriver so there shouldn't be any problems building a saber out of it.

Advanced capacitors might be more applicable to controlling rapid on-demand power ramping for real lightsabers...if we ever get room temperature superconductor toroid batteries for adequate capacity that is.

one of the perks I have read about is these things can power electric cars at the same capacity as Lion but at 1/3 the weight

Been watching this thread since it started and well, It is a capacitor/condenser with an output regulator. This tech has nothing to do with a battery whatsoever. Fast/Flash recharge is normal with a cap. I am still interested in the regulator that is being used to control the discharge rate to the motor and at what voltage/amp draw the motor has.

They are not a regular capacitor an ultracapacitor is a totally different beast you should check out the original post i placed there is a whole site explaining that the intent of these is to replace batteries altogether (albeit right now they lack the same storage capacity as rechargeable batteries, but if you remember how bad Nicad batteries were back in the day Its just a matter of time)

http://www.ultracapacitors.org/about-ultracapacitors.html

also they are already being used as power sources in a few select devices such as

Edit - remember most capacitors are rated in micro or milli farads (very small units of capacitance) check out this ultracap it rates over 3000 farads
