View Full Version : What do you call this emitter type?

Hi all, in the past I have referred to a lightsaber emitter with an angled cut in front, both straight and curved, as "G-style" meaning Graflex style. However since the emitter on the TESB Vader lightsaber is straight and not part of a Graflex flash tube, I'm guessing that perhaps most would call those type of emitters "Vader style" (as I've seen on other threads). Basically I am curious to know what the majority of you would call the emitter type on the sabers below. Please let me know. Thanks.

Personally I would call it 'Angled' and would describe graflex or 'G-Style' as having the 'S' shaped or curvy cut.

The straight cut I would call an angled emitter. If the emitter has a step on it similar to the one on the MPP Heilland, I'd call it either a Vader or an Anakin AotC style emitter.

The curvy ones I'd call s-shrouds or s-shaped emitters or graflex-style emitters.

Well, when Rob ran RLSA and made sabers in that style he referred to them as "G-Style". I have one myself:

But you can call it what you want!

I just call them emmiters. Plain and simple.

I've actually just been calling any kind of 'shroud' just that, a shroud. That includes Vader style, a.k.a., "straight angles".
When it's got the S-curve to it, it's a graflex style.

Thus why I call them G-style. However I thought I might change it up to something that the majority here and on the FX-Sabers forum call it and then update said change on my website.

Might as well leave it G-style...just don't confuse the "g" for graflex...because that is definitely not graflex-style ;)

Those are 45 degree angled (emitter) shrouds to me. A graflex has an s-curved shroud. Neither one is actually an emitter.

I suppose one could call the inner piece that holds the blade an emitter though.

I am not going to refer to the inner emitter as a blade holder as that is certainly not what you would call it if lightsabers were real (even though in this situation it technically is indeed a blade holder). That said, if the "blade holder" was only comprised of one piece of metal, I think the word "emitter" is a good word to call it.

Every part of a sword has a name. Some of the main parts of a european broadsword would be the guard, the handle/grip and the pommel. All of which make up the "hilt". Basically I substitute "guard" for "emitter". Even though most lightsaber designs do not have a "guard" per se, they do have an emitter... but yes, I can see where the sabers I posted in this thread could be said to have a shroud and an inner emitter.

Yeah, it's more of a shroud. ;)

Just don't name Tim's parts. :p

From Friday night's Shoutbox conversation after he posted the new #14 and #15 blade holders.

Luke ANH/ESB [Graflex] is an S-curve.

Anakin ROTS is an S-curve.

The rear of the the warp nacelles on U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 [NOT refit, NOT -A,B,C,D or E, NOT that JJ Abrams movie abomination] is an S-curve.

Vader ANH/ESB [MPP/Heiland] is an Angled.

Anakin AOTC is an Angled.

If lightsabers were real they would be emitters if they included the part the 'energy' comes out of within them [Vader ANH/ESB, Ani AOTC], and shrouds if they just OVERLAY the part the 'energy' comes out of which protrudes as a separate piece [Luke ANH/ESB, Ani ROTS].

IRL for us building 'props' they are as Strydur names them accurately "bladeholders".

Look, call them what you want. None of you should care if I call a shroud or blade holder an emitter (even though for sabers like I posted I have now decided to call the outer part a shroud) just like I don't care if you call them shrouds or blade holders. I will still call blade holders "emitters" just as I'm sure most of you will still call emitters "blade holders". As long as we all know what we're talking about, it's all good.

"Can't we all just get along?"

:D

Its all good and btw those designs you put up are very good indeed...I particularly like the bottom one though I'm not really into weathered sabers but the design is gorgeous imo.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I appreciate it.

I think I'll just call it an angled shroud or angled emitter shroud.

If I do an another S-curve saber, I'll call it G-style (G for Graflex).
