View Full Version : Laser Bow: brainstorming for a story

Hey guys,

I've been trying to brainstorm ideas on a weapon for a story (not actually constructing one) for my jedi-ranger character. I want to make up something kind of like a bowcaster, but with the lightsaber mystique. It would be more of a bow rather than a crossbow. It would be a jedi-weapon rather than just a weapon. It would be used for long range sniping or whatever. I haven't read enough starwars novels to know that something exactly like this hasn't always been mentioned. I don't know. I guess it might be a little like the bow on the D & D cartoon they had back in the day (of course it'd be better if it was somehow more compact), but what would it look like? How would it operate. Also, some of you guys with CAD have come up with some stellar stuff. You could add to this. If you guys think it's a lame idea, or don't care, then please don't rag on me too much. Also, I'm sure someone has thought of something like this already, independently - so let's see it, let's hear about it.

why not just anormal compound style bow, but what could be "jedi like" would be the arrows, they could be thick on the end, kinda like the ones that rambo used to blow stuff up, but the thickness could be an emitter so to speak that a small inch or two inch lightsaber like blade came out of.....that could do some damage.

Thanks, Ben. That's pretty cool. I guess I'm thinking of something that has a pure energy projectile, so the jedi wouldn't have to carry arrows around.

Back when SWAG (Star Wars Artist Guild) was up I requested a Jedi archer... but alas I have lost it and SWAG closed down.[:(] Ooop... Nevermind I checked SWAG and it's back online. YAY!!! Here's the one I requested. http://swagonline.net/view.php?photo_id=1400

I think I get what you are going for though. Almost like Bowcaster:Crossbow as what you want:Bow. I picture an arrow that is like the bolt for bowcasters.

Nope, I requested it. The forums used to have request pages where guild members could pick up the request. I mostly did it for kicks... I had one request that no one took.[:(]

I mostly requested stuff because the artists had good turn around where I couldn't.[:D]

That's pretty cool. I bet JediRanger has something to add. Hmmm? [:p]

even an ordinary bow in the hands of a JEdi would be far from ordinary. perhaps it could fire stun arrows?
or just be plain old organic....likely to pass through the more sophisticated force fields since they use no technology?

Reality often interferes with what would otherwise be an idyllic delusion.

how about a blaster (or beam weapon of some kind)that has it's energies focused through a force crystal, ie is able to acheive a higher energy level with no increase in power consuption like a lightsaber. you could have it shaped any way you wanted.

Hmmm..........personally, I could see this being a type of weapon based more around the time when lightsabers were first created. Back when they had seperate power sources (batteries) on the user's belt, attached by a cable to the hilt.

How about no actual bow string, but something attached to the pull-back arm/hand. A sort of sensor. And depending on how far back the hand was pulled, would adjust the power/range of the selected output type, be it ion, laser, or "stun". And then of course, it would be collapsable.

Make sense?

Anyway, just my interpretation of a bow-type Star Wars (Jedi) weapon.

Building on Jedi Rangers idea:

You could make it into a prototype lightsaber. Have two curved beams extend from the hilt, and then a 'power coupling' type of beam come from each of those. The user would need some kind of glove for the pulling hand... In fact, the coupling beams can be attracted to the glove, where it would build a charge that Jedi would have to use the force to direct and release.

The history could be that the bow itself was often used by Jedi to fend off attackers that got in too close for ranged combat. Then, was later developed into a sword because of the beams powerful properties. Also, Jedi found the beams unique ability to deflect blaster bolts. Thus, making a ranged weapon redundant for a keeper of the peace that is only to defend themselves in the first place.

I guess it'd be the birth of the lightsaber, or something along those lines. Sort of like a superhero comic book's origin story. It would actually tie into the Lucas train of thought very well, according to the DVD extra features about the lightsaber.

I dunno, just throwin' it out there... Thats my take on the 'laser bow', do with it what you want. But feel free to email me for my address so that you know where to send my share of the royalties. [:p]

EDIT-

Here's a fairly cheesey photoshop of what I mean. No cracks on the ps job though, it was a quicky.

Well, at least with being a Yankees fan ya got the blade color right[:p]

Really though that's pretty neat, cool thought put in to that and it ties in to what Jedi Ranger was saying. I want one.

I definitely like the idea of using the force crystal and sharing some similar workings to a lightsaber. Thanks.

I like the idea of it not using an actual string, and the idea of it being collapsable. Thanks for your ideas.

I think that is the best idea. It would be something like this.

http://img324.imageshack.us/img324/3433/lazorbow8vk.jpg

Hold down the button and the sensors detect how much you pull back. The further you pull back, the more powerful and longer ranged the shot will be. So you could switch from snipe to close and fast instantly.

So, are you roughing out the story yet?

Honestly, not yet. I'm having trouble I think because this character is kind of an projection of myself, and I'm so concerned about the story being perfect that I don't know where to start. And, since I have two brothers, I want to create a story of three brothers who are all jedi. Sounds interesting, but I just have to decide where I'm gonna start and where I want to go with it.
