No, the Tank will be sealed off. There's a bunch of screws in there anyways...

BTW:
That's a nice model!!
I couldn't tell if that was a real car deck or not, I had to read the caption!

Any plans for a "steering wheel" and conductors seat? I know it'd be icing on the cake but a horn/train whistle would rock.[8D]

My budgit limits what I can do with this thing, but I want to put some valves and leavers and the such.

I was thinking about putting a bench seat inside on the back wall.

If making the cylinder wasn't such a PITA I'd "Extend" the tank into the box like it should be...

Hey xwing, IF you have the time, can you draw these plans up in CAD?

If you can't don't worry about it. I know you must have a bunch of sabers to do. I just think it would be cool to show off.

The plans that I drew (in the first post) are at a scale of 1 square = 6".

If you need clearer plans I can scan it rather than that photograph.

That desk is cool..but its not wild enough for me. You know when vader and luke are on the deathstar and the emperor is on his thrown thingy thats a ball that splits in half..now that would be a killer desk. If someone has time, scrounge up some pics for me. A quick google search didnt turn up anything.

You know Firebird I used to think that I was the coolest uncle but I think with this project you have pulled ahead of me. One of the coolest projects I did was for my nephew, it was when the knight rider tv series was on and he loved kitt. I took a battery powered car that a kid could ride in like a power wheels car, and it was a firebird, so I built a electronic circuit to make the scanning red light for the front of kitt and fit it into the car for him then I painted it black, it was really cool I wish i had a picture of it.

Firebird21

xwing, I hope to have it done, or something resembling done by Fri. Because I'm going to show it to the rest of the family on Sat.

This is designed to come apart in 3 sections for easier transportation. Tank, Cab, and Chassis.

So far it looks like this thing is going to cost upwards of about $600 to build. A far cry from the $300 I guessed first...[V]

Oh, well. He'll like it. That's all that matters.

Funny story...

I went to Home Depot to pick up the paint for this thing…

So I’m standing in line waiting for them to mix the colors I’ve got. Red, Yellow, Blue, Black in exterior paint. So I, making idle chit chat and curing the paint guys curiosety, say,

“This is becoming quite a project! All this for a gift.”

So the paint guy’s like, “What, are you painting someone’s house for them?” (Barf!)

“No, I’m making a train for my nephew.”

No lie… Both the paint guy AND the guy in the line next to me both say,

“Oh! Do you live on Rt.xxx?”

I’m say, “Yeah, that’s the one!”

Now, this Home Depot is 20 miles from my house! And these guys knew about it. Lol

Also, yesterday, while I was working on it, some woman stopped by and asked me if she could pay me to make one for HER son!

It’s too bad I don’t have a garage to work on this stuff in… I could punch one of these things out in a couple of weeks if I had some templates and jigs, and didn’t have to depend on the weather.

How much would you pay for one of these? If you had the extra money that is.

Dude, with you being in the N.E. there is no reason you can't charge a grand or more. Didn't you say you have put about $600 in so far? just a cheap wood slide n swing is over a grand at most of these stores and that's in VA where I know it's a bit cheaper although not by much. If you wanted to make a few of these on a special order basis I think that you should get what you feel is fair compensation for your time. It may be a good idea to not to be to authentic with the Thomas face for any that you make for sale just cause you don't want to deal with copyright bravo sierra.

If you mix a little extra hardener in with your fiberglass it will harden faster even in cool weather and you can use a drop light to make some extra heat to speed things up, but you probably know that with your autobody experience.[:D]

SOOOO.....

How did it go this weekend?<hr height="1" noshade id="quote"></blockquote id="quote"></font id="quote">

The morning:
Well, I've been hemming and hawing over how to do the Dormer (that hump in the middle of the tank), so Sat morning I'm sitting at the dinner table with my cup of coffee, http://www.gaownersclub.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_morning.gif when I look up at a glass rose in a glass dome I made for my wife 4yrs. ago, and then it hits me http://www.gaownersclub.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_nutkick.gif
No not like that, like this...http://www.gaownersclub.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_idea.gif this is the perfect shape! I just need a bigger one!

So now I have 4hrs. to run to Michael's (Craft Store) then to the Auburn Auto (where I get the Fiber Glass) get it all home, make it, fit it, paint it, and install it. So I http://www.gaownersclub.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_bolt.gif

So I get the stuff home and I get right to work on it. Coat the 8"X12" dome with Pam and glob the "Kitty Hair" Fiber glass filler all around the inside.

My brother is supposed to show up with the trailer at 1:00. So I'm racing to get it done before he gets there. I get the fiber glass in, and he shows up.

Then I realize that the back of the base is wide open (not good, kids will clime into it, get stuck and cut themselves on screws) so I'm freaking out now. Then I realize, he's early! it's only 12:00!!!http://www.gaownersclub.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_woot.gif So I cut out the plate for the back, and paint it up...

It starts to sprinkle...

http://www.gaownersclub.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_oogle.gif

That lit the fire under my a$$ http://www.gaownersclub.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_hurry.gif

So I go over to the now dry fiber glass and try to extract it from the glass mold...

Lets just say I made quick work of a $25 glass dome...

But the dormer looks grate!

It's too bad that, after wet sanding it for paint I realized it needed more fiberglass at the mounting points or it wouldn’t have made the trip. It's now 1:00, this thing is soaking wet, and it's still sprinkling... Latex does not dry when getting rained on...

So, it's getting delivered without the Dormer...

1:00:

We get it on the trailer and off we go. Everyone staring and/or pointing as we drive the 20 mile trek.
We drive past a town carnival with a chinsy kiddy train ride...

Oh yes, we blew the horn at them all. They all stopped and pointed. I don't think those kids had any interest in that ride anymore.

All the while it’s starting to rain harder and harder…

Meanwhile, in the Bat Cave… Sorry wrong story!
The parents are getting the unknowing 3yo recipient dressed and outside for when it arrives. His parents ask, “Uncle Mike is bringing you a surprise, what would you want it to be?” His response, “A big Train!”!!!

http://www.gaownersclub.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_huh.gif Maybe he’s clairvoyant..

We come down the street and he starts jumping, “It’s Thomas!!! Is it ‘Day Out With Thomas?’” Dad says, “A little longer than a day! It’s yours!”

So now the kid’s knees are shaking, he’s jumping, the whole bit… and the Sun comes out!http://www.gaownersclub.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_sun_smiley.gif

Oh, thank http://www.gaownersclub.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_jesusico.gif !!!

So we get it off the trailer and he says “Did Papa (Grandpa, and my Father-in-law) order this for me?”

http://www.gaownersclub.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_wtf.gif

NO!!! Papa doesn’t even know about it!!! I spend a month and $800 (I think) building this, and HE gets the credit… http://www.gaownersclub.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_zx11pissed.gif

10min. later, Papa shows up. He sees it and his jaw dropped. He brought a bag of toys and was about to just “throw them out the window”. Lol

He says, “Where’d you get this?”
“Mike made it.”
“WHAT?!, He MADE it?! How come I didn’t know anything about this?”

I swear, that was the best part of the whole day! (He’s my wife’s family “Fix-it guy” and I have yet to be able to prove to him that I DO know how to work with my hands too. But this long enough with out getting into that.) Although, I think he was kind of disappointed that he was left out of the loop on this one. Sorry! I didn’t even let my OWN father help me on this one. And he’s the one that taught me everything I know about wood working.

Then the neighbors started walking by, stopping in, calling… All curious about Thomas.

So all in all it went well, he’s happy. It’s been fun, I just don’t know what to do with my time now.

I still have to finish the Dormer, Bumpers, and he noticed that there was no light on it (That I was going to skip all together) And of coarse, he notices these things are missing the next morning, after the shock wore off, and who does he call about it??? Papa!

So Papa says to me “We gotta get something for a light.”
I’m thinking, “We? You better not start fudging with my train! http://www.gaownersclub.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_tim.gif ”
I reply, “I’ve got a few things in mind, I just need a flashlight to fit in it”

Don’t get me wrong, I love my father-in-law. But it’s always a http://www.gaownersclub.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_pissingcontest.gif when it comes to mechanical ability.
He built him a Sand Box…

Now I have to decide if I’m going to make another one.

Whatever you do, just don't http://www.gaownersclub.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_pissingcontest.gif into the wind...no one wins those.

All jokes aside, kudos! Fantastic job, man; your talent is evident.

Good on ya dude!
That was a great story, indeed you are powerful as the emperor has foreseen...[^]
That is awsome that it all came together and I can relate with you on the family issue. My wife has an uncle that is THE do-it-all guy and her mom and aunts would always call him asking if something I did was right.
