THis is Bandai Japan's HY2M (Hyper Hybrid Model) Air Shock Battle Beam Saber. It is a 1/12 scaling of the beam saber used by the RX-78-2 Gundam from Mobile Suit Gundam 0079. It makes lights and sounds. Has a senor in it that reaches about 80 cm, meaning that if there is anything in the path of that senor within 80 cm it'll make a sound as if it is cutting it. If there is nothing in the path then it'll make a swing sound. It has three modes, normal, combat, and scenario. OVerall a must have for any Gundam fan.

and yes i'm in the progress of recording the sounds off the saber to make a Gundam sound font for my CF.

I like the design and I think if made in aluminum with the correct accents it would be terrific...other than that...meh.

That thing is really cool. Did you find it online or thought a connection in Japan?
And does it need to be swung so hard to make it work?

I'd love to see that hilt remade in metal.

Cooly! I look forward to this sound font. Though I do think the beam saber's idle hum is really not that good...it just sort of throbs and is painfully obvious that it's just a short clip repeated over and over with an obvious beginning and end. Oh well.

Beam saber toy! The 80cm proximity sensor is really really nifty and helps make up for the lack of a blade. At least now you have a saber toy you can swing around the house without destroying lamps and stuff all over the place.

BTW, that thing is, essentially, a beam saber for a giant robot. It was white, so I understand the plasticness of the hilt. Though...it would make a pretty awesome lightsaber if done in metal...

kinda of and kinda not you have to emphasize it enough. think of it this way you have a katana. Since it is made for cutting swing it as if you were cutting something. you can't god like twirling and what not.

How old is it? Looks like it could have been a base for the Kyle Katarn saber.

Mobile Suit Gundam 0079 aired from April 7, 1979 to January 26, 1980. So the hilt was created long before Kyle Katarn was probably conceptualized...however the concept of this beam weapon probably came from Star Wars just on a giant robot scale.

As sekrogue said...Gundam waaaaay predates Kyle Katarn. But Star Wars predates Gundam. So....beam sabers are probably based off of lightsabers, but beam sabers are definitely not rip-offs of or based off of Kyle Katarn's lightsaber.

*edit* woops. You said that the beam saber could have been the base for the Kyle Katarn saber, not the other way around. my bad. I'm a huge Gundam and Star Wars fan, but I doubt the guys at Lucasarts ever saw Gundam before going into the Jedi Knight games...so as cool as I think it would be, I don't think Katarn's saber was based off a Gundam saber. =/
