Sorry for the poor quality video, but I am not very good at low light recording. The saber has much more color variation than the camera is able to capture.

I personally wouldn't dare give it up, but you've inspired me more on my PolyC saber. It HAS to be a RGB now and I want to take the dial idea even further with on/off switches for each. This is what the Gallery was meant for: TO PROVOKE IDEAS!

xwing, my mind might change tomorow, but as of now, it's like Grima said: *curled up protectively around the saber* "My.... preciousssss...". [}:)]
Thanks for having my back, but this is my costume piece and I will only let it go if I get an offer I can't refuse. That is until I build something that excites me more...

Anyway, practical advice - you don't need switches, turning the dials all the way down effectively turns off each color. Now if you still want to install them just for looks or love of playing with buttons, than go ahead, but like I said, keep in mind you don't need them

I know, but I thought it would be lame to have to dial it down if I wanted to switch from pure red to pure green. With buttons I can make instant color changes if I leave the dials at full blast.

That'd be a neat demo... "Oh, red... Wait green... now everything in between!"[:D]

I am lucky enought to have an OEM parts liquidator in town. A big "junk yard" for electronics and hardware. Dirty, messy and not quite cheap, but you can run into some real treasures in there. The potentiometers I found were a "dying breed" - only 9 of them at $5 a piece, and it took me 3 hours of searching to find them. Oh, yeah, and they are of 3 different kinds too.

yeah, sweet saber gelu. it sure would be a help to others wanting to run that same kinda setup, not the handle of course, but a rgb setup in there like yours, if you wouldnt mind throwing up a wiring diagram for the circuts and possibly how you mounted the rgb and heatsinking, ya know, details. i dont plan on copying your handle or nuttin like that, it would go in one i designed myself, but that is just so sweet a setup, id like to know the details of it, so myself, and others who wanted to try their hand on this could have a battle plane, so to speak, of the internal hookups.

alright, i'm new to all this, so i looked up some potentionmeters, and they ahve different ones, they have precision multi-turn ones, linear motion.....i'm guessin the precision is what i'de want, but i wasn't sure, and was shipping any problem from that uk website?

Do-Clo
03-29-2006, 12:24 PM
When using a potentiometer it is best to get the linear taper version as the resistance changes evenly through out the entire motion. The other type is called audio taper and that one starts of with a slow change and changes to a fast change which makes it hard to get a fine adjustment.

Do-Clo
Don't make me destroy you...

xwingband
03-29-2006, 12:40 PM
YES, avoid the audio tapers! They change logrithically because our senses work in orders of power instead of linear. The change would be too fast to get much out of it.

A sliding switch might work too. Probably easier to remember relative positions compared to a dial...

Funny, but that's exactly how it happened. [8D] I was walking through a flea market and saw it: "mmmmm, shinny!" And a light bulb (or more precisely a 3 watt LED) went off above my head: BIIIING!

Ambo, it is definetely brighter than a filtered white. It is as bright as any other 3 watt LED. On the minus side, you need an aditional 2 inches in the hilt for the potentiometers and it is much more trouble to install than a simple white with filters.

which is why i asked gelu to share his internals hookups, so we all might try our hands at this. seems, tho, our biggest prob is gonna be findin the right pots to use. i have a sound board that has 2 pots on it to set the volume and pitch, theyre like the mini switches you see soldered on pc boards. dont know if something like those would work, they dont have a knob just a slot to adjust with a screwdriver. but i reckon you could make something to hold them inside the hilt, have the 3 small holes in hilt. make a cover for them if you wanted. or not. you wouldnt be changin the colors like gelu is able to, but you could set it for whatever color you want to use at the time, then change it when you want. gelu, how bout those type pots, would they work? i think we can get them thru allelectronics if they would work.

whats wrong with that? of course he dont have that much in it, but just like anyplace, like MR or Lighttech, or other custom saber sites sellin off made customs, its only worth what one is willing to pay. im sure somebody would pay 500 for that awesome piece of work. nothing wrong with tryin to make some good profit on it.

The thing is I DON'T want to sell it, so that's why I overpriced it. If someone is willing to pay that much for it, so be it, I'll let it go. Otherwise....** my precioussss **
Not that much by a long shot, but it did cost a pretty penny to make. I did butcher 2 MRs for parts after all. Oh, and burned one $15 RGB LED and one MR sound module in the process. Stupid me, stupid mistakes, but they were part of the discovery of what, how, in what order and so on.
Long ago I worked for an antique rug dealer. I remember he had some beautiful Agra rug he was selling for $250,000 and it shocked me. Then he got a Givenchy he put up for 1,000,000. Yes, you read it right, one million for a rug. It was thread bare, painted over with permanent markers (as restauration) and he was asking seven digits! His theory matched precisely what Lan-Ed said: it is worth as much as someone is willing to pay for it.
Anyway, I wouldn't dream of selling to you, guys. You are makers, not buyers. If you like something, you make it, and make it better. That's why we're here, isn't it? For me, much has been personal discovery, but just as much if not more, has been stuff I've learned on these boards and TFN. So, thank you!

I know what you mean about not wanting to sell something that you have built, but if someone is wants it bad enough they will pay the price. I run a communications shop and I carry a Nextel phone and I always modify the phone that I carry with ringtones, games, custom wallpaper, and then I hack the software in the phone to turn on features that are not turned on and then change the display color layout. After I am done it ends up being a cool phone and I really want to keep it. It never fails people start wanting to buy it and I always quote some really high figure and they normally buy it. So I end up with enough to buy 2 new phones oh well.

I'm also interested in costuming and $500 could get me a rather decent Jedi set up or the bulk of a screen accurate TIE Pilot...

Okay... technical question on the saber. This has been wracking my mind because I don't know enough about electronics to properly answer it.

You said it's just running on the MR and like that diagram. This is all like a 3W... but each color is a 1W. Is dividing that connection actually spliting the current so that each color is not being overdriven?

I'm currently jugling quite a few ideas. The one I want to do is run it off of Corbin's board, but he seemed quite unsure of if I followed what you did that it wouldn't overdrive each color like it was a 3W. I really want this option because Corbin's board has all those features, plus it offers a easy way to interface a sound board.

Next option is individually resistoring each, another driver like a micropuck (which is appealing because I can use a less batteries), and finally doing it just like you if Ultra actually does make MR soundboards available.[:)]

Sorry for the longevity... this has been bothering me ever since I started thinking about whether I needed Corbin's 1W or 3W driver.[?]

Xwing look into a Luxdrive Buckpuck, they have different output currents and if each color of the RGB is 1 watt then you could use a buckpuck on each color and the great thing is that the buckpuck has an option for an potentiometer so that the led can be dimmed, this would take a lot of the work out of the set up and then you will just need a sound board and no other drivers.

I noticed the buckpuck, but the pot on the harness would only work for all of them not each individually. So that's not a deal exactly because I'd still need pots for each color. If I go for another driver I was thinking of the parallel micropucks. I could use just two batteries for the LED and a second set for the board... not bad.

Hey Gelu. I'm working on a similar project with the RGB Led for school and I had some technical questions. Did you only use the MR sound board to drive the LED? I've seen people use a micropuck, but im not sure what the deal with those are. I'm most likely going to use a hasbro module btw. Any help would be fantastic, thanks.

xwingband
05-04-2006, 04:04 AM
He did run it off off the MR. I asked pretty much the same question on the last page. I'm wondering if that will work for any other driver because if it divides the output and doesn't overdrive each 1W diode.

You can look at a micropuck at luxeonstar.com under luxeon drivers. A handy device if you want to use less batteries.[:)]

An RBG is a bunch of 1W LED's so you like one you like them all. You can turn them on and off to just get the three seperate colors there's no need to do the dials.

Way cool saber. I know you said that the color kept changing because you kept hitting the pots. Isn't there a pull-to-adjust type pot? A spring loaded knob that you have to pull out to turn?

Maybe something like this would clear that problem up for you. I like the knobs myself...but would be annoyed with the unwanted changing of the color too.

both are very cool looking sabers guys. After I finish my MR Anakin conversion, I may have to move on to attempting an RGB....I wonder what an RGB duel blade would look like....[:D]

It's not the Jedi way....

Iam having problems finding the right potentiometers.

Its 1Watt 500ohm pots right? I cant seem to find them there eather half watt with 10K ohm or in that range.

I understand everything else I just cant locate the right potentiometers

Wattage like the resistors used for luxeons is not much of a problem. The higher the better...

For the resistance higher will work. You will lose sensitivity though.

So as long as its a 1w pot it will work regardless of the ohm? Just alot harder to adjust the color?

heh, seems like this thread has been deaf for awhile. or a month. this whole RGB led lightsaber thing has me interested. i have a few questions though. can it be white? i'd imagine you turn on all three led's at once?

for a first lightsaber, would this be suggested? or just do a white led and get colored discs?

and is this more expensive than doing a single led?

p.s. does this look like the right part? link (http://cgi.ebay.com/1-PC-3W-PROLIGHT-HIGH-POWER-RGB-FULL-COLOR-LED-70-LM_W0QQitemZ320108085530QQihZ011QQcategoryZ66954QQ rdZ1QQcmdZViewItem)

for a first lightsaber, would this be suggested? No. or just do a white led and get colored discs? Yes.

and is this more expensive than doing a single led? With the pots yes.

ok, thanks for the answers. greatly appreciated. is the white of a rgb led the same white as a normal white led?

and...i'm not too worried about difficulties with wiring everything up, but machining holes and putting everything into place inside the hilt. i guess, what's the difficult part? assembling everything or wiring everything?

xwingband
06-14-2007, 02:24 PM
Actually the white should be nicer, although it all depends on how you mix it. Turning in all at full may not get a pure white. Single White LEDs are usually somewhat blue tinted.

I'd say an RGB is difficult on both fronts. It's a lot of wires to keep track of and installing is that much harder because of them and mounting the switches.

I'm still midway on another project, but I may rethink my RGB project. I'm thinking spacewise and aesthetically I may like sliding pots better.

ok, again, thanks for the input. i think for now i'll stick with a white led being that i don't have access to any way to machine or customize parts. do the colored discs noticably dim the blade?

Yes, they do. Some colors don't show up well. They aren't saturated well. I like the leefilters, but the discs can get some decent colors too.

ok, i'm going to email leefilters for a filter book. what would be a suitable explanation? i'm a physics student going over lightwaves/lengths (i am), i am into photography and am looking at filters (i'm taking a class next year).

and what would i do with them? just cut a small square off and put inbetween the blade and led? and do these filters shrink due to heat (from led possibly?)?

thanks everyone!
