My dad absolutely despises hanging christmas lights, it's just such a hassle.
I was wondering if I could use EL wire next year to replace the traditional lights. What I would need to know is what kind of equipment I would need to string, say, ten 17ft lengths together, as well as whether or not I would need to find a way to protect the wire from the weather. (I would imagine so, as we live in a pretty damp climate.)
Any help is appreciated!

You do need to protect the EL wire from the weather. If any water gets inside it, though the end, it'll short it out and probably damage the phosphorous coating. You'd probably need to use some clear plastic tubing or something like that.

You'll also need to find an inverter to supply all that wire. I'd suggest an AC type, not battery operated. You're going to need something that'll power up to 100'.

There's some examples here:

Just do a search for EL drivers or inverters to find what you'd need.
