Obviously, this is the Japanese version (all Hasbro products are sold by Tomy in Japan), but I don't recall seeing anything like this on the boards here.

It's on Yahoo! Auctions Japan (http://page9.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/k111749877), but it's a "Buy It Now" deal, and not an auction per se. They're asking 3500 yen (about U.S. $39) for it, which isn't terribly cheap. It's called a "Super Sound Lightsaber" (in Japanese, anyway), and while most of the print is too small to make out, and there's no explanation of functions given in the item description, I'm pretty sure I see "11 types of (something-or-another) Jedi Voices", which makes me wonder if it's some gimmicky thing where you press the button and random lines from Episode 2 are played.

Look familiar to anyone?

I used too have one of those. I think I paid $25 here in the states when I bought it 5 years ago, or so.

I made the mistake of taking it to a beach party and letting someone else play with it and it got a bunch of sand inside it. It never worked right again. I took the blade out for someone to use it as a belt hanger.

I think it's got a vibrating motor in it. It's supposed to be a "training" saber. It has Yoda's voice coming out randomly and I think maybe Obi-wan's and Qui-gon's voice. I don't remember.

Ah, I found the description for it:

Anakin Skywalker Interactive Training Lightsaber

My friend has one of those. It has the best cheap toy sounds ever, you have two activation buttins on the side in whitch you have to enter a secret code and then it activates. then one of the ignitation buttons becomes a blaster block button so when you hit it it makes a blaster noise, much like cf, but if press is a million times in a row qui gon's voice says "control you must us control". it has three swing noises and many clash ones too. If I had to ever use a cheapy board I'd use this overe all the other hasbro stuff, it is very good quality.

Thanks for the ID, Jedi-Loreen, and the details, Sairon. It sounds like it might be worth the money, though I'm guessing there's no way to eliminate the voice aspect. Thanks again!

you only hear voices when you enter your code and if you tap the clash button a million times in a row. the rest of the time it is saber noises, If I can't get a 616 board or better I will actually use the board from that exact type of saber (though it was bought in LA), because I have access to one:)

Forgive the noob question, but what's a "616"? I've seen it mentioned in wiring diagrams, but "616" is too short for this forum's search engine. Is it the Holy Grail of Hasbro boards?

616 is the last sound board made by Mater Replicas. it is the board in the joe jedi sabers. it is a fx sound board with two banks (sith and jedi). hope this helps:)

The "616" is actually called " Master Replicas Light saber Construction Kit" or a "JOE JEDI", they were sold at Radio Shack but are long gone and basically available only on ebay now.

Ah! Yeah, I know Joe Jedi. I just never knew the board was known as "616". Thanks for clearing that up. I was debating whether to buy one, and checked it out first hand at a Radio Shack in Seattle when I was in the States last February, but wasn't impressed. At the time, though, I was just collecting FX sabers and had converted one to an Luxeon, so the thought that I might want to just have the board for making a saber from scratch never crossed my mind. I still see them offered new on Yahoo! Auctions Japan, but never with a starting bid I would seriously consider.

Like... hmm, with a blaster button and a ton of clashes... how was there no "equivalent demand" for this board alongside the MR board? Interesting.

Wow. Even Novastar hasn't heard of it. Strange. Since I'm pretty new to this, all these models are equally alien to me. I'll file a report as soon as I get it and have it under my scalpel. Muhahahaha

All master replica FX sabers have a number and 616 is its.

Thanks, Hasid. Is there a list of these numbers somewhere on the boards?

No, there isn't.

Now I kind of wish I hadn't ripped the blade out of mine and given it to someone as a belt hanger.

The board may have still been good, just the switches fouled up by it being dropped in the sand at the beach.

Matt Thorn

It has arrived and been subjected to my scalpel.

First, the good news: The clash sounds are great, the motion sensor (just the sensor, not the sound) is good, and it has a motor, if you're into that kind of thing.

Well, that's about it for the good news. :)

Now for the bad news:

1) The motion sounds are...sad. I mean that literally. It's as if the saber's best friend has just died. The sadness is infectious. I started to slip into serious ennui just swinging the thing around.

2) There is no idle hum, which is a deal killer, IMO. So this is the opposite of the Hasbro board I've been going on and on about over here (http://forums.thecustomsabershop.com/showthread.php?t=6641). (That one has a great idle hum, but no clash sounds.)

3) The light flashes when here's a clash. Not a problem, I suppose, if you run it parallel to a Corbin board and don't let this board control the LED.

Now, the worse news:
http://forums.thecustomsabershop.com/picture.php?albumid=42&pictureid=437
...WTF!?
I count 33 wires coming out of this board! It's absolutely insane.

It's almost certainly the most elaborately packaged toy lightsaber ever. The box itself is attached by a six-wire connector to the saber, and includes three pairs of LEDs, a switch, its own little driver, and at the press of a button gives an elaborate, narrated demonstration. On opening the box, you are supposed to unplug the connector attaching the saber to the box (no job for children's hands) and simply discard about 5 meters of perfectly good wire, 6 LEDS, and a tactile switch!

So six of the 33 wires on the board run to the box, and can simply be disconnected, leaving you with a mere 27 wires to sort out. A few of these wires are presumably dedicated to the "secret code" function, as well as the button that delivers pearls of wisdom from various Jedi Masters, and, once you figure out which wires these might be, you may be able to safely snip them off. Then again, you may completely ruin the board by doing so.

If this is the Holy Grail of Hasbro boards, I fear it is beyond the comprehension of a mere padawan such as myself. So I'm not even going to try to wrap my head around it just yet. If somebody really wants it, I could sell it (innards only) for U.S. $20 (to recoup some of the U.S. $48 it cost me) plus shipping from Japan (probably 1200 yen, or about U.S. $13.20).

So I'm going to turn my attention now to this Hasbro saber (http://forums.thecustomsabershop.com/showpost.php?p=113648&postcount=69), which also arrived today, and which should prove to be less daunting. :?

P.S.: Mine is the Japanese version, so the vocal messages are a mix of Japanese and English. All are taken directly from the films, as far as I can tell. (The Japanese messages are from the Japanese dubbed version.) Once in a while, you get the line, "Control, control, control! You must learn control!" If I'm not mistaken, this is a line spoken by Yoda, but damned if this doesn't sound like Christopher Lee.

It is the holy grail of hasbro sound boards. I think the only reason it isn't wasn't so wanted and used is because it can't drive a lux on it's own, and it's got stupid voices, and no idle hum, plus I think there was only a limited amount.

and Matt what is the size of that board? I have not actually ripped apart my "talking" saber yet.

Well, it certainly is unique. I didn't realize it can't drive a Luxeon. The main board is 30 x 58.5 mm (about 1.2 x 2.3 inches).

I'll try to upload a video of the pre-gutted blade in action. The package demo alone is Oscar material.

well it could drive one but not well, notice how the original blade was lit up with accent leds.

Yes. Two accent lights on the side, plus LEDs inside each of the two main switches. Subtlety was not the angle they were going for when they dreamt up this model. :p

With all those wires, maybe we know now, why we haven't heard of anyone using this as a sound board in their saber.

Indeed. Yesterday I was cleaning up, looked down, saw this, and wondered, "What board is that?"

Then I remembered.
This is just what I gutted from the package!
