I want a saber graphic for the main page since nothing really jumps out to show what we do here. I want the graphic to be based off the MHS system. You can obviously add pieces that are currently not available and grips etc..just make it somewhat resemble it atleast. This would be a somewhat small graphic with hilt and partial or full blade. Try to keep it around the length of the "welcome to the custom saber shop" logo.

Winner shall recieve a MHS hilt kit that includes parts that are currently offered that come as close as possible to your design.

Post graphics in this thread only. Any and all entries become property of the custom saber shop. Contest ends 4/8/06 and I will decide then how the winner will be chosen.

Updated info...
I want it to look like a graphic/sketch if you know what I mean. Not a photograph. Not a pasted together image of different pictures of sabers. And it needs to be a hilt with or without blade not just pictures of the pieces. Similar to what Jonitus did.

Okay, I ran into this dilema before... would you say it's okay to grab pics off of the forums? Like Ultra just put the pic with the ribbed section, he specifically asked permission use only. Now how about the rest, I don't want to irk anyone. I assume your pics on the site are fair game though, correct?

OK Tim I have an idea for you and maybe one of you guys have the programs to do this but what about having a graphic that starts with a pommel, then the hilt, blade holder, blade, and then finnally the blade lighting up. My personal choice would be:

pommel3-ext-ribbed-bladeholder-blade-color

You could even have the blade turn on and off different colors to represent all of the selections.

I could play with something in power point but thats about it. I don't think that will work for the site though.

Okay, here's my stab at it...

It's Pommel 4 (my design[;)]), main hilt, modified ribbed section (looks like the pommel), blade holder with what would be the next logical step of a emitters (again like the pommel [;)] but wider). The final thing was a simple sink tube over it.

I did it in CAD then photoshoped the blade...

Well, probably not. Were both using CAD programs for the hilts. Me AutoCAD and Meiv4 Inventor.

i do believe autodesk has like 30 day trials on thier stuff so you might try searching for that. also theres a program called sketchup that ive seen some people use, its either free or also has a free trial period. the problem with things like that is it takes a while to learn to use them.

Well, here's my idea:

http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f252/NightWing726/Lightsabers/CopyofCSSlogo.jpg

It's not quite polished, obviously. I still need to clean it up and make some of the edges more visible, and probably make the logo on the hilt itself a bit more shiny or something. But it represents my basic idea.

I also considered putting "Custom" and "Saber Shop" in red above and below the hilt, respectively. But I figured that putting the logo on there twice was a bit much.

I only used (mostly) MHS parts because it's something you can get really easily. I thought about using the sink tube, but I opted to show more of the easily-customizable MHS, rather than cover it up.
I've got tons upon tons of Sink Tube cutout ideas, if you would rather have that.

I also have ideas for the look of the item menus. If you want, I'll put them up.

Oh, btw, please, no one steal my text-in-saber-blade idea. It's sort of my signature thing I do in nearly all my saber art.

EDIT:
Dang, I didn't even realize we were competing for anything. I guess I should've waited 'til the end... lol.

EDIT AGAIN:
Oh, and I had one more idea:
What if the picture would be different each time you came to the page? You know, there'd be a randomly selected picure, each with a different hilt and/or color.
After all, it is the Custom Saber Shop, and it's all about customization.

I had used the logo as the pushbutton but went for the regular button instead. Looks good but I think there have been plenty of other folks that put the text in the blade on their graphics, however it appears you have the lock on it here[;)]

I just meant in this contest. No one else has done that yet here. Unless of course Strydur disagrees and wants everyone to do that. james3

I am betting no one else thought of doing it since Tim wanted it under the "Welcome to the Custom Saber Shop".

Now with your idea of changing sabers you could take that a step further and have them fade every 2-3 seconds or so and then that would be cool with the text popping up on various blades....

Anyway, ramblings of a very tired Daddy.

Ooooo! I like that one! ^^^

Great Job, Xwing. Definitely one of the best saber renderings I've seen yet.

Something just occurred to me... Strydur, when you said "main graphic", did you mean the main graphic at the top of the page, or the one at the center? 'Cause I think I did the top banner... lol.[:D]

I kinda think it'd be better to change the top banner, because then you'd see a saber at every page, not just the main one. Of course, it's be great if we could change both, but whatever.

If you want, I can come up with a whole design for the entire site. I've already got ideas for the menus, top banner, and main page graphic.

EDIT: Yup, shiny it is. Gotta love CAD materials. I had to keep up too. Plain grey didn't cut it anymore.[:p] /EDIT

Also in the spirit of sharing here's how I do the blades. I use photoshop but anything above ms paint should be able to do this.

1. I make a seperate layer and that will be the core of the saber.
2. Draw out the core in the color you want the blade to be with a single line and dab a dot at the end for a round tip. NO BLURRY EDGES!
3. Make a duplicate layer (I did three) making sure they are behind the core layer and set them to the multiply setting. These are now "aura" layers.
4. Change the "core" layer to white now with the paint bucket. If you did this all right it should seem like you've done nothing.
5. Now switch to an aura layer and gaussian blur it to your liking. Repeat for each aura layer.
6. Gaussian blur the core layer a bit.

DONE[:D]

I was thinking you were looking for a replacement graphic for the entire main graphic, including the text.

I'm thinkin', though: that kinda puts some limits on everything. I mean, if all you want is a saber in that little green box, then it basically just puts a limit on what we can do. I mean, if you want to make it "jump out", then that'll be hard to do, since we're basically just putting a hilt underneath some text (which really probably won't match the hilt in any way, shape, or form).

Plus, it kinda ruins the symmetry of the page. Banners don't really need symmetry, since they just run alogn a top edge. Often times it's good to have the focus lean towards the side of the screen with the menus (like the banner you already have).
Main graphics which go in the center of the page, however, are an entirely different matter. You kinda need symmetry, or the whole thing crashes.
My mom's done some web page design before, and I think she rubbed off on me, lol.[:)]

Anyway, do you think we could "expand" the contest a bit? You know, like add the actual text into the graphic, and whatnot?

Also, I was thinking, it might be a good idea for the whole site to have a "theme", and the main graphic as the focus. Like I said before, I have a TON of ideas. I can throw together a "simulation" of what the site might look like, if you want.

xwing, you have to change the angle of the blade too. It looks unatural.

I'm trying to improve your blade, but this rotoscoping doesn't work well with pure white, or anything close.

Any chance I could get you to send me your pic without the blade on it? even a darker background would be much better, that is if Tim would like a darker B/G for this image.

I know the focus of this is the hilt, but the blade would look much better with a dark back ground.

Lol yea. doing a blade on a white bg is a bit tricky, you can get nice looking ones on colors but white is a pain.

for the record here is my method i got off some tutorial i once saw.
on a new layer
1. select the core area of the blade.

Hey, what if it were a GIF file that would change parts over time? It might start out as a regular MHS style 1, then start swtiching parts up, to show possible customization options.

Can you make the blade fade in and out or ignite slowly from the emitter? I like the disapearing grips, thats what gave me the idea. Of course you would need to add a sound byte too!

Well, now that I had a night to think about it...

We could do some bloody brilliant things with gifs, but is this getting past the bounds of a contest? I viewed it as "make some purdy hilts with existing and parts to come." Pretty simple to do and award the prize for that... now we have changing parts and it's getting complicated. This seems to be heading past a banner to something that would better serve as a modular hilt show off page.

I have a great idea of a conveyor belt type thing of the pommels in a gif, but that's not a banner... and if I knew flash something like the hilt designer where it'd be drag and drop would be amazing.

I think a GIF that shows how the hilts can be customized is great, but stuff like a "Make-Your-Own Custom Lightsaber Flash Game!" is a bit much. That would be great on a different page. A GIF is enough. It acts like a main graphic, but it changes, showing the possibilities. It perfectly matches the whole CSS idea. Makign it a flash thing isn't quite the same thing.

Ok so I've wanted to do something simaler to meiv4 but he already posted the changing saber. There a several realy good sabers that are up. I personal thing that we should take the top five sabers and do meiv4's changing design. I know it wouldn't be much of a contest then but I think it would get the point a cross a lot clearer.

Now that seems great and does seem to hit the point well. Take a few of the designs and make a gif that is "This is what CAN be made."

I was just afraid this was going to get to out of hand and more than what is needed, a good show off banner.

You can't have different people using different programs to create the frames of a GIF image. It needs to be coherent.

Why don't we all just try to come up with hilts ourselves? Meiv4 has the right idea: using the same hilt with different sections/details. If we try to do completely different sabers, then it won't work.

xwingband
03-29-2006, 10:27 AM
Well, of course it'd need to be coherent. I guess we will just have to continue...

It's just when he's started talk on fmv's that starting to go nuts. How Tim is going to give a prize for that is getting hazy... say if 5 designs come out of the gif, does he give them all? I don't think that's feasible.

This is why I kept my design simple.

meiv4
03-29-2006, 12:02 PM
i was totally joking about the fmv's. anyway the thing that keeps this in check is the file size. you arnt going to want some huge image on the front page, something that will load semi quick, probably <512k. so even if you have a compleatly awesome flash thing if its 4 mbs its not gonna be good on a front page.

for the prize on a multi saber gif (created by 1 person) it would be a simple question of, which of your designs do you like the best. the only real options are endcap and LED color, possibly a extension section. so thats really not a problem, getting the diffrent designs to stay coherent is the harder part.

For the multi saber from multiple people, he can just pick a winner and some runner ups, and get them all put into a gif.

Hey Tim, just throughing in an opinion here, I really like Meiv4's idea. The changing hilt shows a good variety of your products and I think this would inspire new visitors to your site to look and learn more. They'd be like, Hey I want to make one like that...no, one like that...no one like that... Before they knew it they would be hooked on buying several of your hilt kits cause they'll want to have one of each! I know I do.

i was thinking about doing something like that in the begining of mine. but then i figured ied have to rerender the parts, so i didnt, nicely done though. that looks like my bro's black nickle plated sax. I still like black chrome better, little bit lighter. i gotta go render and add those emitters now.

Yeah, it looks a bit too fast, and I think you could do without the blae color. Generally, it's hard to do pictures that fade out (like the blade of a lightsaber) in GIFs, because they can only use 256 colors.

meiv4
04-04-2006, 07:18 PM
heh it wouldnt look bad if i was using 256, but using 64 saves a lot of image size.

slower version, yea no blade it does look kinda ugly with only 64 colors

Much better. Hmm... now yours and mine are really similar. Mine's more of a simple diagram, while yours looks kinda like a painting.
I think mine is not-quite-all-that-realistic, and yours is a little messy-lookin'.

I guess it's just the different approaches we took. I was going for the "diagram/blueprint" look, and you were going for a semi-realistic look.

I'll post mine again for comparison puposes:

Yeah, I pretty much just used what my program gave me, although I could have gone more realistic once I got into the photoshopping stage. I chose to stay with the diagram look.

Maybe we should start a "saber design" thread, for those of us not lucky enough to be able to actually build our designs.

What I think is funny is that Meiv4 and I have virtually the same order (basic hilt, then grips, pommels, emitters & ribbed section, then sink tube cutout).

The best way is to make a erased part in the ribbed section. that it fits in. I made the electronics on one layer to save size and moving it up would have the batteries visible too.

Give me a bit.[:)]

Secretly... I'm sitting here thinking "WHOOSH!" everytime I see your gif. LOL.

What'd you use to render the parts? Whatever it is handles light better than any CAD program... I fiddled forever and ended up not using light at all which is why mine are more black.

Thanks for the great welcome. Glad to be here.

I used Softimage for the rendering and did everything else in ImageReady. Softimage is a lot like CAD, except that it's geared more towards animation.

But the look is not from the program, it's from the lighting and texturing. Took a long time to get it just right.
