View Full Version : n00b! So you want to build a MHS saber huh?

Okay, so when a person is new to all of this, it can seem very overwhelming so in case you want to know how to build a basic glowstick I'm gonna SPELL it out right here!

If you follow this tutorial, you WILL end up with a BASIC working LED MHS lightsaber!

Step 1:

Choose a LED blade holder from this link--->http://www.thecustomsabershop.com/Blade-Holders-C32.aspx

It comes with the blade holder and heatsink module. You can use a thermal pad to attach the LED to the heatsink. http://www.thecustomsabershop.com/Star-thermal-tape-pad-P483.aspx

Step 2:

Buy this blade retention screw--->http://www.thecustomsabershop.com/8-32-x-12-thumb-screw--P111.aspx

It can be cut later if it is too long for your particular blade holder.

Step 3:

Choose a Hilt (style 1 thru 4) from this link--->http://www.thecustomsabershop.com/Center-Sections-C33.aspx

These have pre-drilled switch holes and female threads at both ends. It is the "handle of your saber". Don't get bogged down with chokes or extentions or any of that crap! We are going SIMPLE here!

Step 4:

Choose a pommel, one insert and one clip from these links--->http://www.thecustomsabershop.com/Pommels-C34.aspx
--->https://www.thecustomsabershop.com/Pommel-Inserts-C157.aspx

This will be the "end cap" assembly of your saber. Just pick the ones that you like (one of each).

Step 5:

Choose this Modular wiring kit.

First off, the LED module (and pick the color LED you want)---> https://www.thecustomsabershop.com/Cree-Star-LED-MHSV1-Heatsink-Module-P998.aspx

Secondly, you need a battery and either a latching switch or a momentary switch with a pololu converter board (good if you decide to upgrade later on).

Battery holders: https://www.thecustomsabershop.com/2AA-Battery-Holder-with-JST-connector-P722.aspx

Switches: https://www.thecustomsabershop.com/Switches-C94.aspx

This kit has ALL of the BASIC electronics that you need! Don't get all crazy with extras! Build this one first and you can add sound or a driver to it when you know enough to do so!

Step 6:

Buy a 36" blade, this is the best one for a beginner--->http://www.thecustomsabershop.com/LED-Corbin-style-Show-blade-1-OD--P227.aspx

It is bright and YES, you can battle with it!

Step 7:

Tools you MUST have to build your very own sabers in the future include:

1. Soldering Iron (Here is a link to a nice basic kit with EVERYTHING you will need!)--->http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2062758

2. Heatshrink (1 foot is more than enough)--->http://www.thecustomsabershop.com/18-Adhesive-lined-heatshrink-tubing-P32.aspx

Tools you MUST have to do this project include

3. PPE (personal protective eyewear), goggles, etc. You don't want to burn your eyeballs out with flying solder do you!

4. Drill and tap set--->http://www.thecustomsabershop.com/8-32-Tap-drill-set-P52.aspx

Used to drill and tap the hole for the blade set screw. BTW, you need a hand drill too!

5. Tap handle--->http://www.thecustomsabershop.com/Tap-handle-P54.aspx

Used to hold the tap while you tap the hole that you drilled for the blade retention screw.

Step 8:

Order all the "stuff" from steps 1-7

Step 9:

Don't visit the forum again until you get all of your stuff in the mail, you'll just confuse yourself!

Step 10:

Follow the basic MHS assembly tutorial--->http://forums.thecustomsabershop.com/showthread.php?t=326

With the MWS (modular wiring system) parts, you can just plug them together. This tutorial is still a good one if you want to actually solder the wires together.

Drill and tap your blade retention screw hole and add the screw!--->http://forums.thecustomsabershop.com/showthread.php?t=5724

Step 11:

take a few digital pictures and upload them to--->http://www.photobucket.com

and then post them here for all of us to see!

Step 12:

Read, Read, Read and in no time you will be building more advanced sabers!

The MHS Builder (http://www.thecustomsabershop.com/mhsbuilder/) is your friend. Play in there to get an idea to get an idea of how parts look together.
Try to keep the length in mind though, it's easy to design something that's a lot more massive than you expected.

Further to my aquiring a TCSS saber I have just completed the wiring and fitting.

Reason for posting?

So all new guys and gals know just how straight forward this is, IF YOU FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTION.

That said I did want to know what the lens should look like before the blade holder is fitted, just in case I broke something screwing the holder down.

Ahem, and I quote
"Contrary to the belief of many, a noob/n00b and a newbie/newb are not the same thing. Newbs are those who are new to some task and are very beginner at it, possibly a little overconfident about it, but they are willing to learn and fix their errors to move out of that stage. Noobs, on the other hand, know little and have no will to learn any more. They expect people to do the work for them and then expect to get praised about it, and make up a unique species of their own."

So give yourself some credit, you're probably not even much of a NEWB anymore if you've done all this reading. Granted, you won't know everything, but that's why these forums are here :D
Click here (http://www.physicsforums.com/showthread.php?t=98933) to learn more about n00bs, and get a good laugh while you're at it! :p

ok, so basically I can't make a purple lightsaber? And is it crucial to buy that LED starter kit, or once you buy it can you switch out the activation button?

AND another question.

Is it possible to make a hilt just out of extensions? Or do you have to make it out of the main bodies and then add extensions?

and whats the Heatshrink used for?

Jedi-Loreen
07-24-2009, 01:02 AM
The only ways to make a purple blade using high powered LEDs is to use an LED die that has 2 or 3 LEDs in red and blue and properly mix the colors (too advanced for beginners) or use a white LED and a purple filter (much easier).

You can make a hilt out of extension pieces, but you'll need to have Tim drill a switch hole in the piece that's going to hold the switch.

This saber I made from 2 different extension pieces (with a double male adapter in between) and I told Tim where I wanted the switch hole to go.

http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b8/JediLoreen/Lightsabers/SUNP0037.jpg

If you don't know what heat shrink is for, then you didn't read the basic MHS hilt tutorial linked in the first post of this thread.

Hey, making a purple saber is easy.:) J-lo said you could use colored filters Tim sells.

if you don't think that it will be purple enought look here: post 10 & 11 have filters like the ones Tim sells.

If you do go purple, just make sure you the white seoul P4 and not the white Lux III.

As for your last question- Yes. the BYO electronics kit is a great way to start!

Solo, Jacen Solo
07-24-2009, 09:14 AM
I was thinking about going with the filters...but in my experience I've not liked the way filters look. Its just easier to go with a straight up color. Maybe I'll experiment with the filters later.

I would like to suggest that the 'guide' recommend using a quick release connector if you are going to use a 'choke' section. Since the LED and other parts dont fit through them it can be a pain to assemble and even bigger pain to disassemble if you dont use this piece.

Wonderful!

And if my newb-ness may be excused for two more utterances: (1) Is there any problem in adding adapters/extensions (for aesthetic and expansion) to this basic layout; (2) how would one without a drill press get a covertec onboard this design?
(I predict the answers are: (1) no; (2) buy the tap/drill hole service)

lol You really should start a thread where each person can ask 2-3 questions, regardless of their n00b/newb-osity.

[edit] Oooo, and as long as I'm here :D : How can Yoda's MR sell for only $80 (amazon)? From what I've read and what I've messed with on MHS that would only cover the hilt.
I guess deep down I'm wondering what possible reason there is for not buying and cannibalizing it....
My kids gets a rockin' first lightsaber and eventually I get the soundcard.

Darth Securis

#1. You can add all the expansion pieces you want as long as the threads will match up. Just keep track of how long your saber will be, you can get up to 15 inches real quick which is a pretty long saber.
#2. If you haven't ordered your MHS parts then you just add the drill and tap service to your cart before checkout.

I got a used Yoda in good condition for $45. Good deal for a MR. If all you want is a LED saber, then get a MR and convert it. It will be less expensive and easier than a custom MHS w/ soundboard.

On the other hand, a custom MHS w/soundboard is going to look and sound better. I am doing a conversion w/ some modifications right now and will be getting an MHS for my next saber.

Thanks man that is extremely helpful.

This will proberly sound like a right nOOb question where for you will all shake your heads whilst tutting and then saying blooming nOOb plonker, but am I right in thinking that you don't need a sound board (eg. US2.5 or FX board) to have a recharge setup?

"Please don't flay me alive if it is a stupid question (LDM)" LOL

You don't need a sound board for anything except sound. But if you don't use a sound board you will need to make sure you have an LED driver, buckpuck, or resistor between your power pack and your LED. On the negative lead, if I'm not mistaken.

Hopefully this isn't too large a bump,

but I noticed that the green Luxeon III isn't available anymore. I searched the forums, but found nothing. There will be another shipment, right? It doesn't say it's out of stock, it's just... gone.

Any help would be appreciated.

Luxeon III's have been discontinued and replaced by Rebel LED's in the store. Go here for what you seek (http://www.thecustomsabershop.com/Luxeon-Rebel-Star-P523.aspx) ;)

Maybe a mod can update the thread.

You are welcome, for clarification: the link i provided is for the LED only. You will still need the correct resistors etc that come in the kit. You will simply need to purchase them separately. Good to see people reading and getting involved ;)

and that will cost me around 50$ more. just for the heatsink. this is just great.

Is there any way to make the saber, without the heatsink?

I think you're exaggerating a bit. http://www.thecustomsabershop.com/MHS-new-style-Heat-Sink-P622.aspx is only $8 in the store. Unless you live outside the US, shipping is unlikely to bring your total to $50.

If you wish to make your own heatsink, it can be done with a piece of copper or aluminum. Copper is better at transferring heat, and is the preferred solution.

If you go to the "Parts Lists" section of the boards, you can post your list of parts you plan on purchasing, and the veterans here will let you know if you're missing anything important. It may save you some heartache in the future.

kaptenfisk, I live in Japan, so I feel your pain on shipping charges. Only advice I can give there is double and triple check your orders ahead of time, and order enough to make it worthwhile. If you think you'd like a second saber, or sound at some point, now's the time to order.

It looks like you've got pretty much everything you need for the stunt saber in your picture, with the exception of the heatsink (which is VERY necessary). What about a blade, though? Do you have one already? If not, ordering one at the same time as a heatsink would make that shipping charge more somewhat more justifiable.

As for making one... I dunno. It's certainly possible, but seems like a whole lot more trouble than it would be worth, IMHO. Especially since MHS parts are manufactured in America, and while building a heatsink you may run into problems with SAW/ metric discrepancies. (Don't know about Sweden, but et me tell you how fun it is trying to find a 4-40 x 1/4 inch screw in Tokyo. Whee.)

I came pup with an idea, my sites lives in SF right now, and she's coming home this summer. So thought i could order it to hear house, and then she could take it with hear then she's coming home.
But i would love to have some help, what type of heatsink i will be needing, and if there's anything else i will need, please tell me!

TuxedoCartman

I'm assuming you bought your blade holder not that long ago? If so, the heatsink you need is this one. (http://www.thecustomsabershop.com/MHS-new-style-Heat-Sink-P622.aspx)

Let's see, what else do you have... I see an LED star, lens, lens holder, blade holder, quick release connectors, blade retention screw, pommel & pommel insert w/ c-clip, resistor, battery holder, heat shrink, battery-holder, main body, and a button. Is the button the latching variety? It needs to be if not.

Only other thing you need is a thermal tape pad. (http://www.thecustomsabershop.com/Star-thermal-tape-pad-P483.aspx) They're cheap enough, you might want to pick up two, in case you mess one up trying to apply it. You may also need a bit more wire (not entirely sure; don't the original "how to" guide in front of me). 26-28 gauge is good for your purposes, and Tim sells it in the store for dirt cheap, or you should be able to find it just about anywhere.

The section Silver serpent mentions is on the main page, under the header "Miscellaneous". The section is titled "Parts Lists." It can be found here: http://forums.thecustomsabershop.com/forumdisplay.php?39-Parts-lists
This is the section of the forum where new members can post a list of the parts they plan to order, prior to ordering, and make sure they have everything they need, to try and avoid the situation you've found yourself in.

The heat sink that is made to fit your blade holder is the one linked to by Silver Serpent. Trying to get something else to fit in the blade holder is going to be difficult, as was pointed out by tuxedocartman, but it may not be impossible. Based on the picture of the parts you have, I'd say that saber is going to be a little short, but that's my opinion...I'd add a choke to it as well, between the blade holder and the main hilt piece. If you do order more parts and have your girlfriend bring them with her, I'd also suggest adding the adhesive pad for under the led:
http://www.thecustomsabershop.com/Star-thermal-tape-pad-P483.aspx
Not only will it hold the led securely to the heatsink, but it also aids in the transfer of heat from the led into the heatsink, which will then transfer it to the blade holder where it will dissipate off the outer surface.

awesome thread clears up a lot of things and if it weren't for this thread I probably would've given up on this whole thing already, but I have a few questions I hope you don't mind helping me out with :)

1.When I build my saber in the MHS builder it seems to add a Heat sink by default, yet I thought the "Rebel Star LED & MHS Heatsink Module" already includes the Heat sink?

2. In the "Basic MHS build tutorial" a "resistor" is used however no resistor is included with the "basic build list of parts" It does however, come with the "buck puck" I assume this can be used to serve the same purpose as the resistor?

3. I want a blue LED light saber and my only concern is that it won't be bright enough, what I mean is I want it to have that "nice white bright core" all the way to the tip with the blue "haze" around it, I heard the "corbin style" blade does this well? and if so will the "Rebel Star LED & MHS Heatsink Module" be enough to pull this off?

thanks everybody in advance, been reading a lot and I'm ready to order my parts soon :)

you will have to buy the AV switch hole service
http://www.thecustomsabershop.com/Machine-AV-switch-hole-P557.aspx

as for your switch make sure you read all of the description "These are large and the only items currently set up to accept them are the Box style 4 and Bezel for illuminated switches" you will need to either use the setup described or pick a short AV switch. if you decide to stay with your AV switch and go with the box do not buy that AV switch service. there is a seperate service specifically for mounting that box http://www.thecustomsabershop.com/Box-4-Mounting-holes-service-P453.aspx

as for the modular wiring system, this thread was started several years ago and that package has been replaced with this one http://www.thecustomsabershop.com/Build-Your-Own-Seoul-P4-Electronics-Kit-P469.aspx

Step 5:
Choose this Modular wiring kit ...
This kit has ALL of the BASIC electronics that you need!

Does this modular wiring kit come with all the basic electronics that I need? I read the description of the modular wiring kit and it doesn't list a battery pack - but, you didn't say to purchase a battery pack separately, so maybe it does have one? Does it come with the resistor? Does it include the quick-connect? How about an on/off switch?

Everything else you've laid out so carefully and meticulously, including providing VERY HELPFUL and time saving links! So, it seems odd that you wouldn't mention anything about a battery pack, etc., which seems critical for building a basic working light saber - unless, of course, all that IS included in the modular wiring kit.

It's just not clear to me and I want to make sure I've included everything I need in my purchase. Would you please clarify? Thanks!

First off, Welcome to the Forums!

You will need to take time to go through these forums and read up on things. You can start with the links in my signature. You only mentioned a switch, but not what you are connecting to it.

Go through this thread and I'm sure you'll come up with several diagrams that show how to connect a 16mm AV switch.

I need help; So, apparently you can get a heatsink with your blade holder, but you can also buy a separate one too... So what's the difference?

Onli-Won Kanomi
02-04-2014, 11:38 PM
Some people may have already built an MHS saber and just want to change whatever bladeholder they were using before to a new one but since they may already have heatsinks with LEDs mounted on them that they want to use they can just buy the new bladeholder without one. Other people who are building sabers new and don't already have a heatsink would probably want to buy one along with the bladeholder they choose, or several if they want to be able to 'swap' LEDs of different colours in and out of the same bladeholder.

There are several types of heatsinks to choose from, some designed to work best for single-die LEDs like P4s or rebels and some designed to work better with multi-die LEDs like LEDEngins or tri-rebels that allow extra holes for additional wiring on such LEDs. There is also a 'flat' heatsink for space-limited saber builds where there isn't much room for 'cram fu' that sacrifices the long copper lug behind the usual heatsink face to allow more room in the hilt behind the heatsink for fitting other components. There are also 'old style' heatsinks for people who might want to change their LED on a saber that uses an 'old style' bladeholder they may already have.

TensePhilly

So if I buy a blade holder and pay 9$ more for a heatsink it'll have color?

Forgetful Jedi Knight
02-05-2014, 03:50 PM
No, It means that you would have a heatsink to use with whatever LED you decide to buy. LED's can be sold separately. I think you are confusing the pre-wired MWS parts, with a standard blade holder and heat sink. Start a thread in the Questions and Answers thread, with what EXACTLY you plan on doing, and we will be happy to take a look at it. ;)

It depends [TM]. Generally, your best bet for a single die would be a single cell Li-ion and a resistor.

Another newbie here, have read a lot and watched videos and I wanted to take a moment and say thank you for all your hard work on walking us through things. I'm sure it gets frustrating. Thank you very much!

I am looking to build my first saber and do have a question about the main bodies. What are the differences between not getting holes drilled and getting the recessed hole done instead? Ideally I would like to have a saber that I could put a blade on and have sound but not sure about the switches and how to attach the clip for a belt. I probably am missing the posts somewhere. So I appoligize if I have missed it.

Welcome to the Forums.

Either way, if you want a switch, you'll need a hole for it. You will just need to decide what kind of switch(es) you want depending on what you want in your saber.

Also, a covertec ring or a d-ring is attached to the hilt via a screw. Again you will need to decide what you want and where so you can have the store drill and tap the hole for it, unless you can do it yourself.

Ok, so I will open with saying I have minimal experience with this sorta thing.

The guide is great but old. I noticed they did have a modular wiring soundboard, and that there is a new hilt style, and multiple hole types you can get drilled.
I assume if I bought entirely modular stuff it would by similar to the modular kit I built my Quad-drone with. Essentially high tech lego, plug and play.
Would I be wrong?

Spent the last week bouncing between pre-mades. Currently between just ordering from Ultrasabers (Which i found had a lot of bad review at one point but less recently) and genesiscustomsabers.com (which is located in the same province of canada from me) make sense.
Reason I am here is because if i am given a decent guide i could probably make one myself, with the features i want. The two big features are sound and some way to recharge the saber. And when i googled guide this post was the first to show up. And seems simple enough to make a simple saber. Flip that, this process is like staring at a wall. I see the writing but its a lot to take in, especially if i plan to make something feel like its mine.

Added Edit: Sadly modular soundboard is out of stock. T-T, but overall idea still applies. also curious if there was someone who doesnt mind going over my shopping list when the time comes. I dont wanna forget something, or miss compatibility. Saving money and doing it myself would be defeated if i cant actually build it myself.

Oh so hes worth it? So few review on him to be found.

Got soldering gun, and a dremal multi-tool. I have some minimal experience.
But was i right in thinking modular wiring could end up being plug and play/easiest starting point?
Cause between that, and the cheap costs of services like powdercoating and having them drill a recharge port, I might go for it.
Out of stock modular soundboard, but I am curious how hard it would be to wire up my own. I also saw a custom wiring service. that could save myself a screw up.

Yes, the guy in charge of GCS is the same Madcow who did most of the tutorial videos in this section of the forums: http://forums.thecustomsabershop.com/forumdisplay.php?51-Informational-and-Tutorial-Videos

I agree with TrypWyr. Building your own is a wonderful experience. It's hard to match that sense of joy when you ignite a saber for the first time, and you built it yourself.

Oh so hes worth it? So few review on him to be found.

He's one of the top 4 or 5 Sabersmiths in the hobby.

It's in the store. Look under Modular Wiring System.

"All of the above". You essentially need one of each if you want pre-wired parts. Battery pack + prewired switch + prewired LED = Very basic stunt saber.

This part? There's about a dozen parts in that picture. Which one are you looking at?

If you are talking about the wires, I am pretty sure thats an old quick connector section that was replaced by the JST connectors

Thank you LDM for this excellent post! Building my first stunt saber soon, and this info helped immensely in collecting parts and tools. Any other questions I have had, have been answered in other threads or on the TCSS YouTube channel, which also has excellent tutorials. Really looking forward to getting started. Just waiting on parts now.

Thanks for the excellent post! I bought some TCSS parts from JQ Sabers here in the UK for a very basic stunt saber. I started out with a buck puck and 2 x TrustFires then I swapped over to a resistor + a single Panasonic 18650B when that ran too hot and the batteries drained too quickly for me (1.5 hours). I'm looking for serious endurance for costume trooping whilst I spin and freestyle duel. Here's a photo. I'm not a huge fan of the colour (cyan) but this is just a test build. I'm using JST connectors on the LED module so it can be easily swapped out for other colours.

Next step is to start playing with sound, extend to a staff saber, weather, add more detail etc. Thanks again!
