View Full Version : DARTH MAUL FX !

Just got my DM FX!

Very sturdy feeling, maybe a more "finished" feel. Very clean. The blade doesnt seem too feel loose in the hilt. The red and silver buttons are aluminum, 2 Rubber o rings.

More observations and my plans!

A red LUX is going into this sucker one day soon.

Three of the buttons look like they are glued on and pushed in the hilt. They should pull right off. The on off button has a set pin. The emitter has 2 set pins. My guess is the emitter will screw off once the pins are removed. I hope its one pin that will push through. The small pin in the on/off button is small and might be hard to remove.

The two LEDs are clear. They should be no problem to remove and replace with working ones.

The battery holder is about the same as the other FX sabers

The endcap is cool looking. Very light feeling. The Red crystal is held in place by 3 screws. Plenty of space in the cap for an led to light the crystal up. I'm going to also "weather" the outside of it.
Give it a lightsaber cut look.

I'm thinking one could make a Bastardized Maul (with a little work).

If you got one, post your thoughts.

My wife has our camera so I can't take pictures now but I will when she gets home around 5:30 or so.

I am curious about the base connection for putting two of them together. Snap a good image of that area.[8D]

Ok guys I have great news!

1.The main pin is one pin. It pushes right out from one side to the other.
2.Next unscrew the belt clip.
3.Unscew the top silver button. It is used to hold the plastic inside.
4.On the on/off push in the pin onthe side of the button. The button will pop off.
5. Push all of the guts out of the end.
6. Push out all of the pins holding the blade.
7. The wires match up just like the Vader. They are no different!

This thing comes apart nice. Im doing a mock up LED now. Pictures soon!

Hold tight,I'm going to get the camera now.

lol, not a day and getting converted already.

A big question has been the sound, is it the same ones as the Vader?

Also how about some size impressions now that it's AAA?

Not from what I hear... Did you order two singles or the "double" package? The singles are supposed to ship now and doubles in April.

It looks like it will use the standard three cell, so the threading would put the battery pack in place.

How does the base connect to second DM saber?
[edit]
Focus! focus!! [:p] switch to the Macro setting on the
camera for some of those close ups, turn on the little flower symbol.[;)]

That dissassembly pic layout is brilliant.

I just got my Darth Maul and I'm about the upgrade it, luxeon style! That tutorial will come in handy.

We were with Master Replicas for the Toy Fair and were demonstrating the Darth Maul and the new Obi Wan, among all their others.
http://nyjedi.com/images/toyfair2006-mr/toyfair3.jpg

Lemme tell ya, I've been practicing with many of these things for over a year now, and I thought my favorite was the Luke because the balance was great and the grip didn't piss me off with the switch being in the way. I still love it, but since I'm a double saber dueler, the Maul really has a good balance, even separated. The switch is great! I only hit it off now and then, but not as often and the Anakin! I think I'd rather have the heavier batteries, but when put together the full Maul is quite heavy.
http://nyjedi.com/images/toyfair2006-mr/toyfair6.jpg
THAT said, it works well when your spinning it, and the emitters make a good crook to spin on your hands. The two things I didn't like: 1. I instantly removed ALL the unnecessary knobs from the shaft. They were TEARING up my hands! 2. and I don't like the way the sabers vibrate when I stop quick, but now I'm being picky. [:p]

FUN! The Maul is fun! http://nyjedi.com/images/toyfair2006-mr/toyfair7a.jpg

Now, the Obi Wan. THAT'S a ***y beast. Very good to hold, about as heavy as a Mace, but the grip feels VERY good with the black hard rubber. Balance is excellent. Marc here is seen with the excellent version of the Master Replicas Anakin robes.
http://nyjedi.com/images/toyfair2006-mr/toyfair5.jpg
Although, the LEDs will always need to go. ALL my MRs have balcks spots! [xx(] Altough, I'm seeing very cool other possibilities for sabers around here. [:D]
http://nyjedi.com/images/toyfair2006-mr/toyfair4.jpg
So, as you can tell, we really use our sabers. Who wants to spar? [}:)]

That NY JEDI has Obi-wan lightsaber issues.

Or was he talking about obi-wan in some type of code.

Jtsteph, How did you anchor the led or heat sink it? I didn't see any explianation of this, but then again I could have overlooked it also.
Thanks in advance.

SilentBob501

i geuss this is along the same lines as the last post. What is everyone doing for a blade holder? And how does the LED/heatsink anchor down? People seem to be doing ok without a kit from Tim, is the kit needed?

xwingband
09-24-2006, 03:26 PM
The kit is not "needed" but it will save a ton of headaches and is insurance that the holder won't break. I've seen people break the stock ones. Granted before a lux conversion the LEDs will go anyway.

A "kit" ensures it won't break and takes care of the heatsink all at once. Yes, you can do without one, but you can't come crying to Tim when your blade holder breaks, the Luxeon frys because it wasn't heatsinked properly, etc... if you don't use it.

Yes, I think I'll wait humbly for the master sabersmith to prepare a kit for all us padawans. :D

I can not figure out how to remove the inner plastic tube so I can remove the innards.

987654321a
11-12-2006, 08:34 PM
There is a plastic sleeve in the middle of where the battery pack goes in and it is glued in there, you will have to get a screw driver and just stick it in there and push up and down on all sides.

Ambo
11-12-2006, 08:41 PM
Agreed, the plastic sleeve is not needed for the saber to function after the conversion is done. Carefully use a small screwdriver or the like and work it the length of the sleeve until you can collapse the tube into itself then grab some needle nose pliers and pull it out. Cheers.

Enzerumo
11-12-2006, 09:10 PM

that might look pretty nice. if you go purple go white led and colored filter.

Lord Maul
01-16-2007, 04:11 PM
use lee filters and a k2 or 5 watter if you really want it to be bright. otherwise, just use a three watter w/ lee filters

When you say lee filters do you mean the color disc tim has?

Lord Maul

no, i mean lee filters. i don't have the link for em, someone else will have to provide that. tims colored discs can't even compare to lee filters

mail@leefiltersusa.com

ask for a swatchbook, its free and about 3 inches thick, each sheet is enough for about 5 filters

btw for your application you'll want to use a white k2 with 5 degree optics, i just tried this setup and i tell you its awesome, not to mention the fact that the beam off the led thru the optics is a tight square, and will evenly light an mr blade on not so new batteries... freakin awesome i tell ya!
