So I finally got this saber put together, thanks to some help from Barmic Rin. Cheers mate, you were a big help, even if I spent most of the time playing with your collection of sabers. :D
Details, vintage Heiland originally from Do-Clo, still using his blade holder and heatsink.
I sanded it down to the brass and let it tarnish, added a clamp and the pommel is from a flash light. Original thread detailing that is here (http://forums.thecustomsabershop.com/showthread.php?t=3228) Yes I know this has taken a long time.
Here she is:

As well as changing the LED I want to paint the shroud, clamp and pommel (except the knurled part) in a bronze metalic to give this a real earthy tone. My pseudo-rendering of what that will look like is thus:

I'm pleased with it, will be more so when it's painted. Not sure what to name it tho.

Green LuxV, I was considering yellow (P4+filter) but I'll do that in a future project.

Thanks, it was pure luck on my part finding that the parts went together. Once they did, then i just had to make it into a pommel, I had the grill material laying around and that was that.

Why would you get a vintage heiland just to sand it down? Wouldn't it defeat the purpose to get the vintage in the first place? You could have simply just gotten a normal brass sink tube.

Don't get me wrong, thats a good saber, but those vintage Heiland flash guns are going on ebay for around 70-80 bucks each.

Why? I like brass It's not meant to be a replica of anything I like it this way I don't want to sell the heiland It was the first saber I got before I knew about sink tubes

Anyway, I didn't get it 'just to sand it down' It was ages after I got it that I decided it would look nice stripped back to the brass. Also it allowed me to get rid of the minor nicks and scratches in the plating

Sorry to double post, but this deserves a separate entry.

Minor update: My local DIY store didn't have any bronze metalic paint in, but rather than leave empty handed I thought I'd see what 'Antique Gold' would look like.
Plasti-Kote spray, very easy to apply, very quick to dry:

Where it's gone over black it looks nice, especially the emitter. Still going to try to find bronze, maybe to get a patchy/weathered look to match the hilt. I'm gonna have to get some daylight pictures because the electric lights make it look coppery.

Alright. just saying, some people are selling Vintage MPPs for up to $150. It was just a shame thats all.

The bronze does look good, but I liked it with the black emitter better. Although that looks like one of those retro-steampunk sabers now.

The MPP flash guns might be going for that much, but I'm not sure the Heilands are. There's enough differences between them that someone who was willing to pay the big bucks and convert one would probably want the accurate MPP. Personally I like that it's not exactly like Vader's, and I wanted to personalise it further. Sure there's superficial similarities, enough to suggest ambiguity about the user perhaps, but now it's unique. I don't recall seeing anyone do a brass (painted) heiland shroud before (tho I'm more than happy to be proved wrong), and seeing as I don't know the make of flashlight the pommel came from I doubt I'll see another one of those.

The black was cool but to balance the look I would have had to make the pommel black and I decided that was just too much black for me. I do have a saber in progress that has a black grip and emitter tho, and I'll be lighting that up in red so I'm not against the style. In short, it was never going to look exactly like Vader's so why go that route?
You reckon it looks steampunk? Cool, an unintended benefit of going for earthy colours :D

ahh you said MPP and I thought it had some Vintage MPP parts on it. If it is just the Heiland parts I guess its not that much.

The original saber was made out of the MPP, and two different Heiland flash guns. I thought maybe your saber had all three.

Dude, you are totally welcome! Sorry I kinda hogged the soldering and all that, but i'm glad we got it going for ya.
Now it's been sprayed, it looks even better!!!

MoonDragn, you hit the nail right on the head, it's very Steampunk. I even said about hoping my SP one comes out anywhere near that good (once i've cut down my 'to-do' list a little).

And now, some videos:

Thanks for posting the vids Barmic. The saber looks great there, although you can see me having trouble getting the blade lockup. The aux switch was pushing away from my finger under the clamp. I've solved that with some denser foam that holds the switches better.
I should have borrowed my brother's camera, no offence but the video from your phone is a bit poo! ;)
It's great that everyone thinks this looks steampunk cos I love that. I didn't set out to make it that way, I just did what felt 'right' for this saber.
Barmic, mate, couldn't have done it without you. If you ever wanna have a building session (I'll help build yours, you help build mine) count me in!

Edit: Must have had a slow connection first time I watched those vids, just saw them again and they weren't all juddery this time.

Well, since we've managed to get three people to each of the last two UKmeet ups, I say we try the localised ones, and just spend the day building & tinkering sabers.
Sorry we didn't get the CF battle yet again, but I now have that loose connection sorted for next time...... :P

You've sorted your loose connection, and I've sorted my loose blade screw.
CF battle? It is the on! (to quote weebl)

The more I look at the brass steampunk look, the more I like it. Great job! I got a heiland flash too now, I'm not sure what I want to do with it.
