tip recycling?

not sure if anyone has done this before, but during dueling the blade of my saber got quite a whack, and the tip flew off. it shattered. needless to say I was not pleased. however, I believe I have something for people who need a quick fix to any similar kind of problem until they get a new tip (or a new blade).

I had an MR saber blade that I'd torn apart lying around. the tip was sitting in a bowl on my bookcase with all the miscellaneous other small parts from said saber. I tried fitting the tip into my blade only to discover that the "stem" of that mushroom tip shape that MR has was too big around to fit past the diffuser. I attempted to sand the "stem" down to size. it was taking far too long, so I said screw it and basically sat down with a hacksaw and (VERY carefully!) cut the stem part off. I now had a half ball tip that fit nicely over the blade. only thing is, it's a clear tip...looking straight on at it results in nearly the full brightness of the LED blinding you. however, I found that sanding the top of it a few times actually frosts the tip and makes it nearly match the diffuser's white color. I then proceeded to glue the new tip onto the saber and I am pleased to say it is holding quite nicely.

if anyone has tried anything similar to this already, sorry...I was bound to make a stupid post eventually right? lol.

by the way, on a side note: saber blade durability tests (i.e. hitting them against crap really hard) should be done inside, especially when testing the strength of the glue you used. the first time I glued it, I didn't do it right, and it flew off outside. took me almost a full day of searching to find it.

So, I have this spare MR saber blade that I now just have hanging around… I got it from some shmuck at the mall. Maybe I should try using that one! I’m sure the owner won’t mind!

I am thinking of doing this - like using the whole MR inner assembly in a new blade, or existing blade. How do you unstick the diffuser from around the "stem"? My diffuser seems stuck to it pretty good.

i think someone mentioned that before, i beleive they ended up using a exacto knife and trimmed it as close as they could to the tip.

I used my dremal and then polished the cut surface back smooth. Took some time but it turned out well.

yeah one of my big problems was getting it unstuck. it was part of the reason I decided to saw the stem off, because despite the fact that the stem was too big to go into the blade anyway, there were also little bits and pieces of diffuser left stuck to it. I tried sanding those completely off and it worked but I'd say just go ahead and sever it. it's much easier.

Tiberius, how much did you spend on your dremel and where did you get it? the hacksaw was just a bit of a hassle.[:)]

Dremels, at least the ones worth it, range from $40-100. I have the top one simply because of the attachments that make it worthwhile to me for non-saber stuff, but the $40 one will do the job quite well for sawing a tip off and later for sink tubes.[:)]

i have the newest dremel out and it is awesome. i use it for things other than sabers, so it is like my right hand. the flex shaft attachment is great, i would recommend getting a dremel that can use one of those.

i am a nerd, if you don't like it, i will cut you with my lightsaber

Yup, I use my xpr for lots of other things. Mostly cutting 1/4" wood that I don't want to walk to the woodshop to cut. The flexshaft is a AMAZING!
