View Full Version : MR Anakin parts Bash

All right then, we have seen how the Anakin Saber went back together using stock parts.

Here are those same parts bashed into a custom sink pipe saber.

I decided that I wanted to use the switch box on this piece, so I drilled the "fins" from the inside and they fell off of the Anakin saber. This allowed the plastic band to be removed. All of the electronics are going to be recycled including the battery pack/speaker. Here are the major parts for consideration.

The battery ring, the plastic collar a modified shower head, and a 12 inch sink pipe, cut down to 8.75", the base flange ground down and some pilot holes drilled for cutting.

_____________________________________

Here the hole has been cut out for the switch and filed clean.
http://img299.imageshack.us/img299/1141/p1010040copy9jd.jpg
_____________________________________

The battery ring was wrapped in teflon tape. The base of the threads is narrow, so start out by twisting the tape and wrapping that once around to build it up. If you don't do this first, when the threads are cast, That narrow area will fill with epoxy, and lock the ring into the base of the pipe(it won't come out). Once the ring is wrapped, thread it back into the orginal hilt to press the teflon into the threads. The threads should show clearly beneath the tape. If the tape tears start again.
The inside of the pipe is sanded with 60 grit sand paper and then cleaned with laquer thinner. JB weld is then mixed up and a thin layer is pressed into the teflon tape covered threads, and the inside of the pipe. The ring is then pressed into the base of the pipe. Rotate the ring as you insert it to make sure the epoxy on the ring, and on the pipe contact.
http://img66.imageshack.us/img66/6766/p1010044copy7ni.jpg
_____________________________________

After a couple hours unscrew the ring. Vice grips will probably be needed to do this. The teflon tape should allow the ring to be removed. Once that is done, Clean up the outside edge by cutting a 45 degree taper down to the start of the threading. And also clean up the back inside edge so the battery pack will fit through.
http://img299.imageshack.us/img299/3412/p1010045copy8xb.jpg
_____________________________________

If you did this properly the ring will thread back into the pipe. It will probably need some work to get it to thread in and out smoothly.
I have only had to knock out the epoxy and redo this the first time I tried this. So far I have been lucky.[;)]
http://img66.imageshack.us/img66/5151/p1010046copy8nb.jpg

I am not too worried about scratches down here as everything will be covered by grippy stuff.
http://img66.imageshack.us/img66/2/p1010048copy9kq.jpg
_____________________________________

A couple of O rings around the electronic core from the Anakin saber will help center it in the sink pipe
http://img299.imageshack.us/img299/5109/p1010053copy5mo.jpg
_____________________________________

Press the electronic core into the sink pipe till the switch holes line up. Careful measurements before hand made all this come out really well. The battery pack was inserted from the top at the same time just to help all the alignments. and there is still some spring available at the battery once the core was in place.
Because a shower head is going over the emitter end part of the Anakin tip was removed to allow the emitter end to fit. Cut the pipe longer if you want to save more of the original blade holder.
http://img66.imageshack.us/img66/1559/p1010054copy2ih.jpg
_____________________________________

The collar of the MR Anakin saber is large. I used some paper gasket material to shim the inside diameter so that it would fit nicely over the 1.5" sink pipe.
http://img299.imageshack.us/img299/7479/p1010050copy3qs.jpg
_____________________________________

With core in place, and the collar shimmed, every thing is set for the final assembly. I used two 1/2" sheet metal screws to mount the switch box. The screws thread into the electronic core and help hold it in place. I took the time to sand the back side of the large button over some spare sink pipe, and it is screwed to the outside of the pipe. A hole on each side of the shower head was drilled and tapped for set screws for the emitter and blade. A "D"ring was riveted where the slot in the battery pack lies, so the battery pack passes right by the rivet inside.
http://img299.imageshack.us/img299/34/p1010055copy7yt.jpg
_____________________________________

I found an orange an blue 1-1/4" rubber flange washer. The orange kind of goes with the large button. Pulling it over the battery retainer ring give the ring some grip and makes it easier to handle.
I am considering stripping the "gold chrome" off of the switch and plate to tone down the colors. "Easy Off" oven cleaner should make quick work of that.
http://img299.imageshack.us/img299/6900/p1010056copy7xr.jpg

Once Again,
An MR Anakin Saber Same parts as the An4kin thread,

but this time the parts used in completely different manner

Nice reuse of the electronics. The saber reminds me of a fire-hydrant though. :/

Great, Now all I will ever see is a fire hydrant...[xx(]

It is just a MR blade and diffuser. No need to give these kids a new blade till they trash or break the current ones.

I got an e-mail from my sister that said my nephews favorite color is blue. So new color scheme, and I tried a differnt topper to see if it looked less hydrant like. Since blue and gold look pretty good together I will leave the switch and box plate as is.

lol, it's better. The shape plus that orange made me think fire hydrant. Just the kind of though that pops into your head.[:I]

Is that your lightsaber or are you happy to see me?

Wow that is a really good idea on making threads. I think I am going to try it. One question though, how 'durable' are they? say if the hilt gets droped a few times. I am thinking of making one for a 10 year old and you know how kids are.

Excellent. I'm glad to see some one reusing some electronics. Great idea on rethreading the end of the hilt.

As of today, there will be two 9year olds with the sabers, so durablilty testing starts....Now.[|)]

BFR has had his for two weeks, and I have not heard of any problems. However BFR has a very thoughtful and meticulous personality. He researched his way to "'parksabers" by the time he made his request to me to put a lighted "yellow" blade into his Heiland saber hilt. His parents steered him away from the cost, and I found my way the the "Trinity".

Epoxy is no replacement for good metal machine threads, but lacking the machinery on hand, it is a nice stop gap, and a good way to re use all the parts of an MR saber.

It is rude. If you don't have anything constructive to say don't say anything at all. It's okay to say you're not a fan of the design but that's just an insult.[}:)] Please make constructive posts.

That statement was kinda like a driveby shooting or some kind of verbal vandalism. I think it was written for shock factor. It's so unlike any person I've known to say something like that, that I'm not even sure if it should be taken seriously. We'll probably never see a post from DACOTA ever again. If we do, then I can't imagine a scenario where a person could be accepted with that kind of attitude and w/o some kind of apology. Oh yeah, very cool saber, Umi. Love the blade color.

its all cool then. stuff like that lil twerps remarks just aint right, nor respectful. just set me off. it doesnt matter to me if he was talkin about someones elses saber or mine. i like constructive criticism on my sabers. if anyone thinks they dont like it, then say so, im not hurt by that. its their own opinion.

on the other hand, to blantently slam somones saber like that twerp did. thats another matter altogether. it just rubs me the wrong way/

im sorry if i ticked you off by what i said, but thats my feelings on it, case closed.

thank you for apologizing, that took some guts. like xwing said, we are all here to discuss ideas, trade thoughts, and ideas around, come up with better ways and ideas on how to accomplish a build.

as long as you keep those things in mind, there wont be any problems. share your thoughts and ideas, but remember to pay attention to how you word things. some folks might be offended, and thats what happened in this case.

so alls forgiven, and enjoy the forums.
