View Full Version : Heatsink question - Which one to use?

So, phase 1 of my saber (the hilt with no electronics) should be arriving on Wednesday. I've got the UltraSound v2 driver pre-ordered, so I won't be playing around with electronics for at least a month. As I finish up putting the electronics in my basket to have everything ready when the UltraSound arrives, I'm suddenly unsure of which heatsink to use.

I looked through the threads using "heatsink" as a search string, and couldn't really find an answer.

In terms of electronics, I'm going to be running a Lux III blue, UltraSound v2 driver, and recharge port all powered by a 4.8V AAA 1000mAh NIMH Rechargeable battery pack. I'm not planning to overdrive anything, or add any additional LEDs or anything.

The question I have - is the heatsink that comes with the screw one LED blade holders what I need, or do I need a more heavy duty heatsink?

Here's the blade holder and heat sink I've got:

Is that the same heatsink as this?

Or do I need a big lug of a heatsink like this?

Thank you for your help.

If you got a blade holder from the shop and its an LED one then you already have that which you need. No other heat sink do you require.

If you're not overdriving, from what I've been reading, the heatsink that comes with the holder will work fine. I don't know if it's the copper one, that's something customer service would be able to answer for you. They're pretty quick on e-mails. :) As for the third one you posted, that's good for something like a 1.25" sinktube saber. It's smaller in diameter than the ones that come with the blade holder.

Ok the heatsinks can hand;e the heat from luxV's so the can handle just about anything.

Hasid, +1 internets for the sig pic. I've been meaning to say it. Funny. :P

In that case, I don't think a lux 3 overdriven even produces the heat a lux 5 makes. So yeah. Go with what you want. :)

Thank you all for the quick answers. I was just surfing through threads and found a discussion about heatsinks that weren't doing what they needed to do and I got all nervous.....

But I'm better now. :D
