Hello! I was wondering if anyone has any tips or solution to removing the copper buttons on an Anakin 2005 MR Lightsaber without messing them up? Any help, tips, advice would be much appreciated..
I've done 3 so far and messed the buttons or the silver pieces around them up. (Why did MR have to make them plastic GRRR)

I believe Tim mentioned a dentist's tool that looks like a hook. I also remember a clay sculpters tool being mentioned too. It looks like a spade (the ones you'd do garden work with) but about 2 inches long and maybe a half inch wide.

I've read about that too.. I've tried a small precision screwdriver and ended up denting and scraping paint off of the silver ring around them...
I just seen that those were older threads and I know in time someone comes up with other ways..
I e-mailed MR and gave them some BS and they gave me BS and told me you can buy those parts at any major hardware store...

This might be something I address at some point..Maybe making one of the button/chrome ring assemblys an actual thumb screw for the blade.

Ok I am back and now in possesion of dental picks, 1 with two hook ends and 1 with a straight end and a bent end.
How do you go about removing the buttons with these.
I seen someone mention someone using a dental pick.

Thanks everyone for your information..
Only if MR was right about these parts being available in any major Hardware store.. ( I think I spoke to one Jar Jars cousins)

Easier said than done... I ended up bending the picks. Scratched the button once when it slipped out from bending...
I think the next time I'll put the hilt in the microwave to soften the glue up first... That might work better...

To get any of the electronics out you need access to the screw behind the copper hump in front. So to nuke the saber you'd have to nuke it all, which is impossible with the whole thing, which isn't possible without a four foot microwave...[?] This line of thought has me wondering, if the blade is off why is the button a problem? Someone had it open it before, and why would you open it again?

I'm sorry but I don't use the MR blades. So I could saw them down and then I'd fit in the microwave.
That exploding microwave stuff only happens in the movies.
Now if you put a sealed bag like the pop-tarts or a can of soup or anything pressurized then I can see a mess of things.
There's a line there between what explodes and what's an urban legend.
Well back to playing a lil Republic Commando...

Oh this is good stuff, I am sorry I missed it. A couple of buddies and I went nuts several years ago "proving" the microwave myths after we had replaced some cabinets and appliances. We made good use of the construction dumpster[;)]

bottom line: Don't mix beer and old appliances that are going in the trash with guys who think stuff up to get in trouble with.

hey i actually have a question regarding the copper buttons..not that mr microwave wasnt an interesting read, but getting back to the jist of the thread....has anyone found a good alternative to replacing these? I was thinking maybe some copper plumbing endcaps may work but not sure if they have the correct size. they would probably look better than the plastic crap ones too...

any comments on this idea...any one look into it yet?

Go to pro-dec.com and they have copper electroplated snap-caps for screws. You want to get the 12/12 size. They fit perfect.Their only $.65.Might be a good idea for Tim to stock them or add them with his Anakin blade holder when they come in.

Well everyone I've yet to try the Hilt in Radiation box yet..
I've yet to get any more sabers..
I seen the last post about those caps.. I seen that sight and was wondering about those.. Thanks for the answer..
So what about the silver rings that fit into the hilt?
Anyone know where to find replacements for those at?
If I don't scratch my buttons up, I end up gouging those silver rings or putting dents in them from pry the buttons off..
Stupid cheap plastic parts..

My brother did suggest maybe taping the buttons or using those lil round band-aids so that when the pry tool slips it will hit the tape first and hopefully not scratch the paint.. I'll have to try it some time..

Invest in a roll of blue painters tape, I tape up a sink tube when I cut it in case I slip and also when drilling holes. You could use it when removing the buttons to protect the finish, it is thick enough to protect what you are working on and it comes off clean with no tape residue.

If that Dac person got parts off sabers like he said I want proof..
Anyways I got my buttons off my friends with no problem..
I made my own tool out of a tool.
I took a slotted screw driver, made it real flat with a vice and a lot of torque on it,
then heated it up, used a grinder, filed it and bent it..
It slips down in, thin yet strong enough and curved just right..
