Attention New Englanders:

Please forgive me if this has already been done in the area, I have come across nothing in the past week of lurching about it.

I propose that the “New England Conference of Jedi Lightsaber Craftsmen” hold a meeting in the near future.

I just thought of this idea, so no preliminary planes have been looked into, and everything may change. And for all I know, it could already exist. That being said, I would propose that this meeting be held at my local church, (I have connections there) in Southern Worcester County in about a month or 2. It should be some Saturday and we could do lunch or dinner. Possibly catering, (if so, admission would be required. I’m not rich lol)

Activities would include:
-Showing off your works of art.
-Discussing your construction techniques and “Tricks of the trade”
-Mock battles (Try this at your own risk because Injuries are likely)
-Skits or Reenactments of your choice.
-Trading possible
-Proper attire a plus [;)]
-To be announced…

If there are enough people interested in attending this conference please post up. I would estimate that a minimum number of people would be 10-15 (including guests) But the more the merrier.

Not a New Englander, but it sounds like a good idea. I bet it will be like castrating a bull to 10-15 people though. You might want to talk to your local fan force because they'll know who's a costumer/prop maker and you might be able to get some people on their way to a convention.

From the impression I get though, you having not built any yet, you just want to see a bunch of sabers in person.[:p]

Hey Firebird! Just wondering if you've talked to the local chapters of the 501st and the RebelLegion? I know of 3 of us in the Alderaanbase chapter of the RL who make sabers. I'm sure there are a few darksiders in the 501neg and ConnSquad! Drop a few lines there. Also check out the Boston Museum of Science this Friday evening if you can for a big costuming panel by both sides, including saber making! PM me and I'll send you some links!

The 501st and Rebel Legion are both costuming groups. Those guys you see at big events and "trooping" are them.

Check out www.501st.com and www.rebellegion.com It's a top notch group nationwide.

Edit: BTW I did go to the Star Wars exhibit at the Museum of Science. Very cool stuff!!! And I did see something about free admission to anyone in costume on some day. Is that what you’re talking about?

Hail from the most southwestern part of NE!

That sounds like a great idea and I would love to setup a workshop.

I hail from the CT Garrison of the 501st. If you are outside CT then you are looking for the NE Garrison (NEG). Both groups are great to hang out with. The NEG has quite a few members that are in the Rebel Legion and would jump over a workshop like that. The CTG just spun off the NEG and we are still growing members. We have an Anakin, Vader, Emperor, and soon I will be completing my Revan.

Just a thought…

If Tim would sanction, endorse, sponsor, what ever the correct terminology may be, maybe we could sell some of his stuff there too.

We could sell key chains, holders, shirts (if available), and probably even misc. saber parts too.

I’m not going to pretend that there aren't a lot of logistics that would require ironing out, but I think it would be very cool!

All this is provided this thing gets off the drawing board.

TK938 and Erik, if you are known in those forums, I was wondering if you could be the ambassadors and drop a line there.

Like I said, I want to get a feel for how popular an idea this is before I get too involved, just to have it fizzle out. So if you guys wanted to mention something on the other forums and get a feel for how many are interested, I would appreciate it very much.

If other forums are doing similar things, that’s cool. But I want to try and start our own thing. And maybe spark some more around the country. I love what Tim has done here and I think he’s going to do well with it. So I want to give him a helping hand and get more people interested in saber making and further inspire those who are already here.

BTW, I hear that air fair from Seattle to Boston is dirt cheap! Hint hint, nudge nudge… lol

I would run a booth in this area at various conventions. I think it would be cool to do that. Tim obviously can’t travel around the US but we are already there.

Build some sabers using Tim’s supplies and sell complete “Dualable” sabers, kits to do it yourself and obviously his T-shirts and Key chains.

Do some “Demonstrations” http://www.gaownersclub.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_fencing.gif [:D]

My only problem would be getting a table at one of those conventions. I’m going to have to guess that they aren’t that easy to get.

Living outside of a reasonably small (50,000 people) town in Idaho, i dont see much outside of the internet. Such is the life of a geek in a remote location... Ill have to keep my eyes and ears open for something nearby, other than attracting the neighbors attention as they see me swinging my saber through the livingroom window

Your best bet is to post in the general forum for both the NEG and CTG. I am a member in both, but not a supportor of those Rebel Scum. Those sights intimidate me! Lol

Those guys are really serious about this stuff. You can’t even be a member unless you have a costume!

I think it would be cool to have them there. Or who ever would be interested.

I’m aiming more for a “Meet and Greet” than a convention though. And I want to try and keep the focus of it on Lightsabers. But after browsing around those sights, I feel quite small. Lol

If I were to drop a line at these sights, would I go to the “event planning” section? I don’t have a costume, so I can’t sign up. Let me know.

Guys!

This sounds like an excellent idea!

The New York Jedi are going to be appearing at the Big Apple Con June 24th and 25th (bigapplecon.com for the deets). We'll be doing lot's of duels and teaching people how to spar with sabers, etc. Even giving away an MR FX Darth Maul during Captain Zorikh's Costume contest!

Our group is all about using the saber, what ever saber you prefer. MRs only work for a certain extent, as we all know. That's why we upgrade right? If there are makers out there coming to the show, please come by and show us your stuff!

But on the other side of this topic, we would love to help put something together up in CT. I'm sure a local mall or Y would cater to using some tables specifically for the vendors, and others for making stuff, etc.

Give a shout!

Good news!

Erv's coming over to the states for a couple of days and we've set up a time and place to have a couple of drinks and a bite to eat. So if there's anyone interested in joining us on Friday the 6th at the Applebee's in Sturbridge MA by all means post up!

I don't think we have an exact time set up yet, but when that gets nailed down I'll let you know.

A calendar event would be cool.

Virus, I think that shouldn't be a problem. However, I think the time may revolve around erv's schedule.

I was leaning towards lunch time only because the place wouldn't be quite so crowded and they would be less likely to complain about the noisy flashlights. lol But what ever time works for everybody is the time we'll use.

I'll have a car, so plenty of free time on my schedule to adapt ! Just let me know what time is the best for everyone. I'll call firebird21 around wednesday and I'll be checking the thread if I can gain access to internet in providence (might be very easy at the University).
Currently I'm enjoying New York, guess what : spent an hour in Central Park watching squirells... Still haven't seen one with a lightsaber ! (probably haven't looked carefully enough héhé  )

Also thank you very much for the unexpected gift of chain malle!!! That is so cool!

Erv, it was great meeting you and giving us a sneak peek at V2. (You guys have to see and hear this thing!!! ) “Yes my master!” http://www.gaownersclub.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_spit.gif

That reminds me, I hope you enjoyed the Same Adams Summer Ale. You can’t visit New England and not have at least one variety of Sam Adams!

We did get some strange looks from some of the other patrons when I ignited my Luke… The couple right next to us, both of their heads came whipping around! lol

BTW: The Old School MHS warmed up in the car on the way home and was working fine when we got there…

I hope to be able to do this again sometime. And this time get even more people to come. If anyone is going to be traveling in my area and wants to meet up just drop me a line and I can try to make arraignments. Maybe with enough notice we can get Tim to hop on over...

Hi Folks ! quick hello from Boston, StarBuck Coffee@MIT. Here's my pic ! Looks different, isn't it ?
(let's play the 7 differences game, I'm pretty sure you have that kind of game here, maybe named differently)
http://www.plecterlabs.com/Media/SaberMeeting1.jpg

Now, about future plan : well, I won't be travelling every week to the USA, however, I think I can try again next year. Why not thinking about a SaberMeeting #2 during celeb V for instance.
I'll be back in NYC by the very end of may / early june for a conference, so I won't make it for celeb IV (really poor schedule). I've been part last year about a worldwide conference organisation in Paris, in the Institute or Research I work for, so I though I could help about organizing this. Find some sponsors and funding (I'm pretty good at this, I think I could even persuade MR) and get a little room in celeb V attrium or something. Presentation of participants (sabers, works, ideas), followed by a round table about future plan for saber building, manufacturer point of view, fans points of view, exchange, question. Don't know, something like an afternoon / 4-5 hours. Participation fees : 20 or 30 bucks per person, helps paying coffee, cookies and various stuff (tshirt/pencil whatever).
What do you think ? Shall we start a topic on this ?

you means "twins because I look as crazy as your uncle" ? (sorry about that, I got influenced by MarkTheDisturbance about trying to read between lines, while the grammar of your sentence won't leave a chance to misunderstand it)

Any Time SaberGirl ! I'm glad the card reached the destination ! I felt so weird when I went to the post office in NewPort, sending stuff to my cousins using "Global Priority Mail"... I told the cashier "you know, normally I receive those, I'm not sending them" ! héhé

I'll be glad to fly to San Diego. I won't be able to make it to california this year for C4, maybe next year. I'd like to continue teaching workshops in US university, like I did at Brown, I hope it will lead me to visit this other side of the USA I haven't seen for now.

Virus : glad to hear you ! well, you don't sound that bad for someone with a drilled chest ! ahhhh.... youth... easy recovery from wounds... (well the cool thing with lightsabers is that blood won't flow)
