drill hole smaller than tap usually the tap will tell you what size drill bit to use. then after hole is drilled run tap in slowly, a lil and back it up every so often to clear out shavings. i usually go 3/4 to 1 turn in, then back it up.

You dont know the POWER, of the dark side...

Use lots of tapping oil or synthetic motor oil too. Otherwise you may break the tap. Tap bits are very brittle. I have had the misfortune to break two taps flush with the piece I was working with already (and I am sure it will happen again). Both times I failed to add oil when tapping. Broken taps can be hell to remove.

most hardware shops have a tap kit, sears, home depot, lowes, ace wherever and they generally have instruction on how to use them as well as preferrable tapping oils and the like to make it go smoother
cheers

OIL...OIL...OIL...

I like to use Breakfree or Remington brand firearm oils, they have some teflon in there so you can rock it right out.

I was supposed to use oil? ... whoops.

Anyway, for the small holes you'll be making for thumbscrews and the like, places like Lowe's and Home Depot often sell teh drill bit and the tap as a set. I bought the sets for 10-32 and 8-32 screws and the tap-bar for about $10 total.
