The second one has Cylon laser sound effects form the original BSG.

The second has Photon Torpedo sound effects form Star Trek.

Ah, cartoons of my childhood. Another great one that I loved was The Mysterious Cities of Gold (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=R7puhQpBGrI). Got a spine-tingle of nostalgia when I heard that theme tune years later.

Oh wow, what a trip down memory lane! Thanks guys!

I loved G-Force! (I had a crush on Princess.)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AWMY4U1g4pg

I've heard that it's available on DVD. I don't know if it's true or not, but I heard that the original Japanese version was very racy, and Cheop swore all the time. When they translated it into English, they made him stutter to account for the extra lip movements.

You're right, they don't make 'em like they used to!

Edit to add: I just looked on Ebay. Yep, they have G-Force on DVD. May have to get those...

Not a cartoon, but one of my favorite shows from the 80's:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M678PVOf5F0

I always wanted the interactive ship that you could use to fire at the guys at the screen. I think that the strobe triggered epilepsy though, and they pulled them.

Wow, there were a ton of shows that were essentially long commercials for toy lines. I'd forgotten how many.

Personally, I liked the second Voltron that was released in the states, the one that was Dairugger XV in Japan. Not the lions. The Lion Force Voltron was way too corny.

speaking of this thread's title, nope, they sure DON'T make 'toons like they used to. long gone are the days of roadrunner and coyote or Tom & Jerry. c'mon..."Aqua Teen Hunger Force?" this is what passes for a cartoon nowdays? blech.

awww man, Aqua Teen is awesome. Different strokes for different folks I spose. And really, Aqua Teen isnt a cartoon for kids, like tom and jerry or warner bros cartoons so its kind of odd to compare them to each other.... thats why its on Adult Swim and not prime time cartoon network.

now as for cartoons for the kids, Spongebob is amazingly amazing. I still watch that...

DDD!

Spongebob BLOODY Squarepants. -There is not enough pot in the world to make me wanna watch this.

Pokemon. - Or 'the beginning of the end' as I like to call it.

Yu Gi Oh! - Why did the kid have a Ray Winstone-esque gruff voice?

Aqua Teen Hunger Force (Okay, Hand Banana was funny, the rest is just dumb)

These are just some of those on my list o' destruction.......

right on, mayne. an old girlfriend of mine used to try to get me to watch that crap. feh! the closest anyone's come to making a decent modern-day cartoon (other than Southpark or Beavis and Butthead) was the pilot that Evan Dorkin made a couple years back for the Cartoon Network (which is at youtube if you wanna watch it under "Welcome To Eltingville."
try to see how well you do when two of the characters have a geeky "trivia-off" towards the end.

That Grim & Mandy started as a one off on 'Cartoon cartoons', right? The same a Dexter & Johnny Bravo. Just random 5min episodes if memory serves.

I liked Dexters labs when it was a one off, then they got the 1st season done, and all was good. The second season just stank.....

Talking of Johnny Bravo....

Anyone remember ROBOTECH, GI JOE, & TRANSFORMERS? I think the animation artwork was much better on the older cartoons. It had more detail & was more 3 dimensional with shading, etc. Newer cartoons look like kids drew them up. No depth or details.

Superdimensional Fortress Macross was good stuff - Robotech was a hokey shadow. A fun hokey shadow, and one I always looked forward to watching, But I have a hard time watching the American adaptations after I see the Japanese originals. The originals had more mature themes, and while a little goofy, were nowhere near as silly as the Americanized ones. I highly recommend:

Dairugger XV (Vehicle Force Voltron here in the States)
Superdimensional Fortress Macross (The first Robotech series)
Science Ninja Team Gatchaman (G Force or Battle of the Planets here in the states - and don't bother looking for 7-zark-7 in the originals, either :D )

I agree on the original Japanese SDF-1 Macross being a much better storyline. The animation was also much better in detail & realism. Nice to know there are fellow Anime fans here.

Tom and Jerry may have been great, but c'mon, the Flintstones? one of the first of many horrible 'toons, and one of the first to feature "limited animation." same goes for the Jetsons...same cartoon, just with different characters and a different time frame.

anybody wanna talk DECENT cartoons? how 'bout any of the DePatie-Freleng ones from the 60's, 70's, like the Pink Panther, Tijuana Toads, Ant and the Aardvark, or the Blue Racer? Much less the classics like Looney Tunes/Merrie Melodies from the 50's or Tom & Jerry.
