Hi gang! I'm hoping you can help me out.

I've heard everyone talking about KOTOR, but I've never played it. I found a used copy recently, (no instructions, of course), and installed it. It seemed to install OK, but when I went to play it, I got an error message.

When it checked to see if the computer was able to run it, I got a message that said something about Open GL, and that I had 1.1.0, and I required a 1.3.0 driver.

I know how to use a computer, but when it comes to the inner workings, I don't know a lot. I understand that I need a driver of some sort, but where can I find it?

Can someone help?

Hey Obi-Dar-

openGL is a the industry standard for high level grahics display (cross platform) I believe..

usually the game woudl have came with an updated verions (Not a gammer though).. but goggleing it or update openGL or somethign similar, shoudl help you resolve any issues. :)

maybe check your video card mfg.

Might just need to update your video card driver.Which card have have you got?

Ati here: http://ati.amd.com/support/driver.html

Nvidia here: http://www.nvidia.com/

That's what I figured. How do I figure out which card I have?

If you go to either site posted above they should have a feature that will tell you if you have the latest driver and what driver you have. Ati and nvidia usually have about the same stuff, for example I have an ATI card and running nvidia driver, don't know why but that's how it works. I had to do the same thing for another game awhile back nvidida did a scan and told me which one to use very simple.

Varies a bit depending on which version of Windows you've got so probably the easiest way is to run dxdiag from the Run box on the start menu in 98/me/xp or type dxdiag into the search box at the bottom of the start menu on vista. Then click the display tab in dxdiag and it will be listed under device.

You can right click on "My Computer" and select properties. Under the Hardware tab, click on Device Manager. When you expand the Display Adapters, it should show you what type of video card you have.

I forgot to mention that once you expand the Display Adapters, you can right click on the adapter you'll be given the option to update the driver right there.

OK. I tried that, and it said that I didn't need to upgrade it.

Now I get this error message:

drwtsn32.exe is an error debugging tool built into windows; runs in the background, and you usually never see it. Not sure why it's failing; the 0xc000005 is kind of vague. Could be HD space, RAM going bad, wrong screen resolutions set in Windows, the game, or both... Any number of things.

What video card do you have?

I don't know. I might soon just use the discs to set my drinks on.

This may work. It's a patch from lucasarts.

http://www.lucasarts.com/support/update/KotOR.html

It may be likely that your video card is too outdated to run the game properly or accept new driver updates. Hunt around a bit on the lucasarts support section. You may find a solution there.

Any luck? I'm curious.

I forgot to mention that once you expand the Display Adapters, you can right click on the adapter you'll be given the option to update the driver right there.

Good tip,but it doesn't always detect the latest drivers so it's usually better to go to the card or chipset makers website to be certain.

Obi-Dar Ke-Gnomie,what brand is your pc and how old is it?

This is a used computer I had given to me by my brother in law. It's a little faster than my old computer, but I've had a lot of trouble getting it all set up and running everything like the old one.

It's an Intel Pentium 4, 1.8 GHz, 512 MB of RAM. BIL says he has more RAM for it to upgrade to 1GB.

When I looked at the display adapters, it says, "Radeon 9000 Family (Microsoft Corporation).

Radeon cards are ATI so follow the link I posted for their drivers.

As it says Microsoft Corporation I would guess you only have the standard Windows version of the driver installed which will have very limited functions so you may find a lot of improvements after you install the full driver.

Got it working.

I went to the Nvidia site and found the driver I needed. After it downloaded, it told me I needed ".net platform" upgraded, so I did that too.

When I rebooted, I tried the game and it ran.

Thanks to everyone for your help!

Looks like a pretty cool game. I may not be around here much for a while... ;)

I certainly enjoyed it, I thought it had a very good story line. The gameplay was improved for KOTOR2, but the game was rushed so the storyline suffered. Luckily there's a fan effort to restore most of the 'cut' content for KOTOR2 at The Sith Lords Restoration Project (http://www.team-gizka.org/)

My advise is that once you beat it doing whatever "side" you do (light or dark), that you go back and play again, changing your alignment to whatever is opposite. The dialog and such changes throughout based on those choices.

I've played each game 4 times:
Male/light
Male/dark
Female/light
Female/dark

...and storyline + NPC interaction/dialog/etc all changed accordingly....it rocked.

Both KOTOR games are among my personal favorites.

Of course I'm playing them in reverse order.

The sequel had better gameplay, was smoother looking, and on a personal note had better robes and I was able to have a beard. Only negative was that it was rushed, and planets like Korriban are over quickly as most of the content was cut there and the entire plot line of Hk-47.

The first though has a story that so far is much more in depth. I am really enjoying it now. The characters so far seem more developed. I'm just not as much of a fan of the Jedi Robes I've seen so far.

Wish they created a MMO for this time in star wars, instead of Galaxies which shouldn't even utilize Jedi! errrr

The only gripe ive got with the original KOTOR is it takes sooooo long to get off the first planet, I keep getting the urge to play it again but all that Taris malarcy does my head in!

Or the fact I bought it day 1 and they had like a million bad copies and of course I got one LOL!

Taris goes by quite quickly after the first time through. However, Telos, in KotOR II, takes for-friggin-ever to get through no matter what.

Both were awesome games in my opinion. KotOR II had a few more little easter eggs, like the silver lightsaber, but it was easier to get into the original.

In the first KotOR, the planet I couldn't stand was Manaan. Taris was a light, quick, side quest compared to that drudgery. :D

Oy, Manaan! I am currently replaying KOTOR and am on Manaan now(~20 hrs in). Oh, the humanity!! Sorry I couldn't help with the install, all that driver/compatibility nonsense is the reason I bought an Xbox :P Have fun - KOTOR is a great game.

I've only played it as far as the first scene to see if it worked. I haven't really had the time to sit down with it since.

Sounds like there are some tough areas to get through. Kind of like slogging through "Conker's Bad Fur Day" on the N64. There was one level that I couldn't get through to save my life. I beat my head against the wall for about 30 hours total before I finally beat the game.

I know a good site that has a Walkthrough, as well as other info about the game, if you get stuck. ;)

I tend to like to play this way, so I don't miss anything, or get too frustrated. Some look at is as cheating, but I still have to do everything in the quests.

I had an addiction to guidebooks and walkthroughs. I developed a firm procedure for myself about that.

Purchase the guidebook with the game, as most retailers knock a little off the price when you do this.

Give the guidebook to a friend for safekeeping until I can prove to him I've finished the game once, and will now use the guidebook to discover what I've missed.
