Awsome hilt, cant wait till I have a lathe. :Dyou need an apprentiship in mechanics to use one professionally or you have to do a course

No...

If you are doing it for yourself who gives? Only if you expect to be a machinist vs. lightsaber builder that will matter. A lot of the best machine work I've seen is from people who do other stuff.

To true.....to true Xwing....

If that were true KB then i guess i am making all of my sabers illegally....because i bought mine and taught myself....I would say that i wouldn't recommend everyone to do this because these types of things can really hurt someone.....i mean REALLY hurt someone......items can become ballistic missile hazards real quick. It takes a lot of "common sense".......

I have a friend who gave me a quick how to on his lathe. The rest of what I know about using a lathe has been learned by just doing it. I would suggest to anyone who is considering buying a lathe to take the time to get familar with it before you start using it and eye protection is a must!!!!!

does corbins style blade have a mirror at the tip? :?: :?: :?: :?: :?: :?: :? :?: :?: :?: :?: :?: :?:

Ryma Mara
05-07-2007, 12:43 PM
No a reflective material but if you buy a mirror add a dap of glue and let the mirror fall down the blade the glue should land bottem first with gravity and all.

Marsupial
05-07-2007, 01:22 PM
or you could just pry off the tip, glue the mirror, glue the tip back, and not risk ruining a blade.

But seing how there is reflective materials in corbin's blades, I fail to see the problem.

Ryma Mara

the mirror is better. my brother did it to all 3 of his blades and hasent ruined anything.

darthdan
05-07-2007, 10:30 PM
Yeah but me and Murphy have an understanding about laws(even those of gravity) I am sure I could find a way to get it crooked and have a nice trail of glue all the way down the inside of my blade...

Ryma Mara
05-08-2007, 07:25 AM
hahaha. There may not be a way thru the law of gravity but there is a way around it. jus slightly tilt your blade and let the mirror roll down. also its a pritty cool light show if you have your saber on when you do it yeah. ammused by the small things of a mirror rolling down a tube with the hilt on.

kinchar bamin
05-08-2007, 07:58 AM
speaking of lightshows, this guy made a DB darth maul saber and the light on the blade could bounce from the hilt to the tip of the blade and bak and forth and so on. he didnt make much of an impression with the crappyness of the hilt.

Yeah, sort of. It's one of Corbin's "force resonators". Much smaller but actually has more of a punch.

I wouldn't be so sure on how fast it sells, but whatever... I'm not dying for money. It's just nice to recoup costs.

Only thing I hate about Maul/Vader boards are the fact that they only feature *ONE* moronic clash sound.

Which (as we all know) is supposed to be the ON sound. Instead, the "on" sound is just a normal on sound for a more light side saber (if that is 'normal').

Heaven knows WHY MR decided to do this. Seeing as they already have a board of nearly IDENTICAL size and design performing 3 clashes (anakin).

If you've ever seen a Vader next to an Anakin--the boards appear to be nearly 100% identical. Save for a "red" blotch on the vader and (usually) a white blotch on the Anakin.

From sidious like to an actual sidious. :)

Here's the first Luxeon Sidious that I know of, built by me. ;D

http://www.incomsabers.com/images/sidious.jpg

It's a Luxeon III powered by a single CR123. It's a very small hilt inside, maybe four inches of workable space. Whoever built them obviously intended for it to be a EL saber. The blade goes in too deep to pull off much more with a luxeon. Sound won't happen but I could see a driver being in there.

The thin walled 3/4" won't make it a dueler but it's fantastically balanced.

Overall it was a simple thing to do, easily done in a day. If you could get one of the ones I've seen floating around on eBay one could lux it up rather cheap. I just used the custom heatsink and put it in a 1" ID 1 1/8" OD aluminum tube. Obviously the saber was poured around a 1 1/8" tube because it was super snug and made mounting a breeze.

Barmic Rin
05-21-2007, 09:43 AM
Was looking at those on Ebay from a guy selling them like 3mths before ROTS came out. What's the overall length of the hilt Xwing?

xwingband
05-21-2007, 09:47 AM
9 inches. About 4" inside is blade holder. With the angle only about 4" is left for lens, LED, heatsink and batteries.

Barmic Rin

Very nice xwing.

I converted one of them to EL ages back for a guy. It was just the casting, without anything for switches already in there. I managed to take it to bits and fit a very small slide switch into the body such that you twisted the ribbed ring section behind the emmitter to turn it on/off.

Worked pretty well, totally hidden but a pain to do.

xwingband
05-21-2007, 12:13 PM
Mine was just the hilt too. I mounted a slide under the brass ... thingie. Totally seamless too.

If I had to do it another way I'd try to make a brass ring to cover a push button and fit in a driver. Of course if I had the tools I'd make my own heatsink to go up in the holder area. That'd make doing anything else a heck of a lot easier.

As to choke points--you really want to go for the black anodized 1.25" emitter. My Flange v3 (and soon, 2nd darkside version!) is about as low as it can get with that emitter, and you get about a "hand's" worth of 1.25" choke.

I dont have any lightsabers yet, but before I got married I collected screen used movie props and costumes. I can share photos of those..... here are a few photos of my collection, yes they are the real thing!

Here is the vest, this is everyone favorite part of the costume and the single coolest thing EVER since the batsuit! You have to see it up close to really appreciate it!

here were my lightsaber plans:
http://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w57/DarthVaedr/00_LightsaberPlans.jpg
From left to right, a sith saber, a jedi saber, and a mini ancient saber. Influenced by Vader, Obi-Wan, and Palpatine respectively. Sith saber isn't built yet...I'm planning for that to be an all-out handle. The other two were completed in time for C4 :D

My "Jedi" saber:
http://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w57/DarthVaedr/06_ObiTributeSide.jpg
I started designing this saber and then realized that it borrowed many many many elements from Obi's various hilts.
http://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w57/DarthVaedr/09_ObiTributeEmitterTop.jpg
It has a round TPM-ish pommel, a rubber t-grip RotS/ANH-y gear, the silver segment above the t-grip, a TPM/ANH hybrid grip segment with a grip overlay similar to Obi's apprentice saber, and an emitter that looks like a cross between an ANH and a TPM emitter...
http://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w57/DarthVaedr/11_ObiTributePommel.jpg
Almost makes it look like it was deliberately planned out as a tribute to Obi's many lightsabers.

And my pocket saber. Note that the brass is not polished; the saber has seen use:
http://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w57/DarthVaedr/01_AncientSide.jpg
http://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w57/DarthVaedr/04_AncientEmitter.jpg
http://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w57/DarthVaedr/05_AncientPommelSwitch.jpg

The Jedi and pocket saber are made of TCSS parts, sinktubes, foil tape, and Apoxie Sculpt. Both only have bare basic electronics, using 3W Red and Amber LEDs respectively.

Love the pocket saber GM.
I saw this one at C4 and I really like it. It uses our 1.25" sink tube adapter, which I have one sitting here and can't quite decide how best to use it yet. I'd love to do something similar, though with my own twist. A sleeve mounted holster for it might be cool. We'll see.

Novastar

All I can suggest is the idea of coupling a 1.5" tube to a 1.25" tube... and then add the black anodized emitter.

Granted, then it would look identical to both Flange sabers I've made.

Still... it's easy to create wondrous variety. As we all know.

By the way, I'm positive you could fit the Plecter board in the KP, although it's a bit longer than your board, but not as wide. It's 38x60x10mm.

Question would be--could you fit a speaker in there?

Thanks scott, corbin, everyone, for the positive response. Not bad for my first set of functioning hilts =P.

I had planned to post a link to my facebook images gallery (http://hs.facebook.com/album.php?aid=2004723&l=2f43d&id=1047240383). I tagged the photos and labelled the individual components I used, ie which parts were TCSS and which were sinktube, etc. But if you don't have an account you can't see the tags :(

I'm actually thinking of revisiting these designs sometime in the future; the pocket saber is one I'd definitely like to redo; being my experimental saber, it fell somewhat short of what I feel I could have done with the handle (namely, the rough apoxie-and-aluminum tape-job).
And the obi-ish saber could use some changes too- notably, anodizing the TCSS grip segment black rather than skinning it with black ApoxieSculpt, which would have made it look much more professional imo. But perhaps the Apoxie lends it a bit of a used weathered look? Agh, the decisions you make in saber building... :?

The neat thing about pictures on facebook is that you can tag parts of pictures, so in one picture, if you hover your mouse over different parts of the picture, you would have been able to see the TCSS parts and such that I labelled. The "tag"-ging feature is something I would like to see implemented in other photohosts and galleries and such.

The top is MHS parts. Brass is "photoshopped" for now. I have real brass sheeting though I just didn't want to install it yet.

Then I used an adapter to put on the sinktube. I really didn't want to spend $30 on a clamp so I used some u-channel I had anyway. A few screws and some JB weld and it's solid. I like it so much that I'm definately using it again.

Other stuff is the brushed band is some contact paper. I like it because it's lower profile than a clamp. That's what led me to not paint the grips either, I liked the chrome vs. brushed play going on. Lastly a luke pommel to house a Luke ESB speaker.

I plan to put in a Luke ROTJ module and Corbin's driver. I really like the layout so I'll probably create a sister saber to it, which will probably house Erv's stuff.

EDIT: I forgot the coolest part! The covertech on the bottom houses the aux switch for Corbin's C/L too.

This is my first saber. I made it for my 2 year old son for halloween but I'm extra late (or early depending on how you look at it). It has a 3w amber luxeon with the most basic electronics, because I'm not that skilled yet, and my son wont know the difference (also so I won't feel bad when he bashes it up). I used everything from Tim including the 1.5 sink tube adapter and blade holder. The blade is 28 inches with tim's blade film. I made it the size it is so that my son's little hands can hold it. I had this sith style yoda saber in my head when I drew out the plans. So this is it. hope you guys think it is at least satisfactory for a first time creation.

If you click on the thumbnail you see bigger pics of each of them, the "vent" you are speaking of is the PLI (power level indicator) which sadly will be removed because the client wasn't happy with it, and the "item i forgot' isnt anything forgotten, a speaker wire came loose and i have to tear it down to re-solder it. Kookie, please clarify next time....because saying i "forgot" something comes across somewhat negatively....thanx.

A couple of new ones...
First my new sithy saber. Tried a few grips, but really I just like it plain. Makes it look more like some kind of twisted surgical instument. Anyways, 3W red-orange, Vader sound board, extra kill switch in the pommel for the sound.

And my latest for offering up to the ebay gods so I can give Tim more cash... 3W white, no sound, clean and simple.

very very nice lightsabers. I almost didn't recognize the TCSS parts on the second lightsaber from the sheer amount of weathering you put them through. Re the Obi-Wan-ish saber, the TCSS parts were painted black then dry-brushed silver. The sinktap and clamp were roughly painted black then, while the paint was half-dry, most of the paint was rubbed off with a cloth.

Then very thin red/brown paint was painted into all the crevices for corrosion.

I'll put some more pics and info up in weathering.

My first MHS saber. It has a blade holder #8, ribbed section, double female w/ milled slots, and grip dividers. A 34" blade, 10 degree optics, 3 watt Royal Blue, and a 4aaa battery holder. One of my MR Obi Wan's sacrificed it's, control box pommel, and sound card. When money allows I'm going to upgrade to a Plecter board, 5watt Royal blue, and a 7.4 Li-ion battery pack(thanks to Novastar), and a recharge port in the covertech clip.

Now I don't know about anyone else, but the ribbed section and blade holder look unfinished. Any suggestions would be appreciated. :D

You can't show images straight from your hard drive.

Like Hasid was trying to say, you have to upload your images to a free photo hosting site, like Photobucket or Image Shack, then copy and paste the url of the image here with the Image tags on either side.

My first "Hardware" saber, based off BYB design. It has a blade holder #2, sink tube adapter, pvc overlay, the grips were painted with Plasti Dip, and a Luke pommel. No sound. Green 3 watt 32 inch blade. Unfortunately the Plasti Dip started peeling off after it was finished, so I won't be using it again for grips. My brother in-law recieved this as a birthday present, we are in the process of adding a hasbro sound board to it.

The pics were taken in my living room with all the lights on and I can't turn the flash off on my camera. Thats why it looks so dim, its actually fairly bright.

I'm an auto glass tech and that piece I found in our spare parts box at the shop. I don't know what vehicle it goes to( trying to find out so I can get some more), but it is for holding a metal moulding around the edge of a windshield or back glass between the glass and body.

I sprayed onto a PVC pipe after scuffing it up and whatnot, and it was just after lots of handling that it started to peel. It wasn't directly on the sinktube.

I had the same problem with a PVC overlay I did for my hardware EL saber years ago. I used a different product, but still the same kind of thing at the Plastidip.

After redoing it twice, I gave up and just painted the grips with some black Krylon Fusion Paint and was done with it.

Er Dan Gill
07-22-2007, 11:25 AM
I scuffed the pvc with 320 grit (I think thats what I used) sand paper, washed it and used a de-greaser. It still peeled off. So I tried painting it flat black and then spraying the Plasti-Dip over that, still didn't work. So I went the spray on truck bedliner route. That stuff FLAT ROCKS as a grip!!

So I tried painting it flat black and then spraying the Plasti-Dip over that, still didn't work. So I went the spray on truck bedliner route. That stuff FLAT ROCKS as a grip!!

I'll have to try some of that sometime. It should be pretty tough if it's made for bedlining.

I would welcome your comments on these two new lightsabers. They were comissioned for my Sister-in-law's boyfriend as a present for his birthday. Both are Maglite hilts with Hasbro Anakin colour change sound boards and 3W luxeons.

Clickable links.

The first is based on a BYB design and is Cyan. The Green hilt LED is flashing.

This is fairly obviously a Vader inspired saber with the Red hilt LED flashing. 3W Red.

Thanks - those are kind words. They did take quite a while to put together but because they were a present I wanted to do them right. I'm very happy with how they turned out.

The first one uses footman loops at the emitter end. Difficult to find in the UK in metal and in the end I got them off ebay from the US which worked out cheaper and easier than buying them here even with the shipping. I think the difficulty in tracking them down is that different people call them different things. They are actually quite heavy and give the saber a nice heft.

O rings added the black detailing (lots of O rings) and held in place further down the hilt with M3X6 cap head screws.

For the Vader the black grips are from Erv at Plecter labs (he had a special on). The 'switch box' is a small piece of black ABS cut to length and the 'box' is a heatsink. The emitter shroud I bought off ebay some time ago and looks like a BlastTech piece.

The electronics are (hilt LED's and switch) are from Maplins (like radio shack).

The emitters for both were machined by a chap who lives near me who does custom machining - and for such a small order it doesn't break the bank.

The Maglite's are second hand off ebay which I use Sodium Hydroxide (nasty stuff) to remove the anodisation to take them back to bare aluminium and then polish.

While they do look good in the photos, they are not perfect. Some components do not line up perfectly and there are some light surface scratches here and there. However, for something made by hand and judged by eye they are pretty good.

I like using mag bodies as they have a built in screw base, have a nice weight and polish up well. It as an easy solution if you don't have a lathe (which I don't). I could of course by items from TCSS - which I do occasionally, but the shipping often makes it prohibitivly (sic) expensive.

That second one looks like the vader-inspired one from Jedi Academy.
Me likes alot!

Yes, it's not far off - although I've only just looked at it, I didn't use it as a reference. The big difference of course is the black piece of plastic running along the the top in the gap of the emitter shroud is missing on mine. I needed to put the switch there.

I did notice that the screw on bottom of the Maglite body looks almost exactly like the bottom of the MPP unit.

How do I become a member of the Flashlight Saber Mafia? All my sabers (four now) have been made out of Maglite bodies.

Thanks Ranger.

I wish I could take credit for the stand. I picked it up of ebay (UK) from someone who had modified it. I was actually surprised at how good a job they have made of it. I use it to display my converted Luke ROTJ on top of my monitor - looks great.

It’d been a while but here’s my latest saber. Custom hilt, four mhs claws, 1.25" Sink tube LED/Blade holder, skateboard grip tape for grips, green 3watt luxeon and MR sound card.

I bought the hilt of ebay, it originally had another blade holder but I decided not to use it because: one, it only had a 3/4” hole (I prefer the 1” inch blades) and two, it added an extra two and a half inches to the hilt and I thought it looked out of proportion. You can see it next to the saber on the bottom pic.

I was a bit worried about the sound coming out, as the pommel is a solid piece of aluminium an inch long and I didn’t fancy drilling through it with a hand drill. But the sound comes out the top holes ok. It seems to sound better as well, instead or the sound coming out the bottom of the saber it seems to come from the saber its self!

One of the other holes goes right through to the optics so it lights up when the sabers on, you can see it on the 5th and 6th pics.

Since the picture's pretty big I'll just put up a link. It's a green K2 running off 4 AAA batteries. I'm gonna get a rechargeable battery soon.

Anywho, here it is (http://i17.tinypic.com/6blw1zt.jpg)

Not trying to direct business away from here but, since it runs on 4AAs you may want to get the energizer rechargables with the 15 minute charger at wal-mart. That's if you intend to keep the power source you have now and not incorpurating a battery pack.

Chaos: how do you keep the claws from spinning on you since ya didn't use the mount?

Stinky Bantha: great saber, terrible switch. that switch ruins the flow of the saber in my opinion

Thoes bolts look like ther eon pritty tight. Iam sure if your carefull they wont move much.

BTW I would of found a way to use the existing bladeholder some how. I think that would look good.

But still eather way looken pritty good.

Thanks for the comments.

Lord Maul: Well to fit the claws in the first place I had to file down the back part of them. If you look at the pics you can see the front part sits over the a lip so that stops them from spinning to much plus, as Hasid Lafre said, their bolted on pritty tight!

Hasid Lafre: I wanted to drill out the original blade holder so that it would fit a 1" blade but the grooves at the top go in to far! I still might use it for another saber. I might use it as a pommel.

Here is my new Stunt Hilt which is completely plain and clean for maximum hand placement possibilities, it uses the new white K2 which now has a rubber dome so no more cracking Thank You Master Stryder.http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c237/G-FORCE13/CSS/DSC00442.jpg
Also for no accidental activation I installed a pushbutton switch in the pommel, which can go momentary for a quick flash or locked.
