Oh, when I was talkin about the 200-250 thing I was talking about getting a double maul converted. You get 2 sabers in a really good deal. Yeah I know how cool the MHS ones are with the customizability, but I first want to get a double one so I can hand one to my friend for practice dueling ya kno. Although, the MHS does kinda tempt me with it's quick change LED kit so who knows?

I've been wanting to do a hilt with a similiar part orientation (ribbed section in the middle), to see what it looks like. It looks great! Thanks for the motivation!

Here's an update to my collection. Added a bit of a switch "guard" to my mhs (I kept turning it off accidentally) and fabbed up a youngling saber for the cut off end of polyC I had left over (used the obi-wan/kenner guts less the force feedback motor)

These aren't finished, but I've been wanting to post pictures of them ever since I got them a couple months ago. The Anakin is currently Amber, originally converted by Ultrasabers, then sold to me by a member of this forum, then upgraded with Tim's kit and the Amber LED.

The white sabers where made by RLSA Sabers - quality of work (assembly mostly) leaves a little to be desired, but at least they look good. I plan to get electronics for them soon, I'll probably start buying parts here and there as I can afford it - I intend Amber LEDs for them and sound. I need to figure out how to install the LED heatsink, because there's really no way to hold it in right now, and the grip is actually really thin aluminum, it worries me, so I'm thinking of reinforcing it with an aluminum tube inside, and that should also provide the means to hold the heatsink, but I'm not sure yet. Then, if I could only round up stormtrooper armor...

Hi guys, this is my progress so far on my Ki-adi Mundi saber.

A little background, I saw this el ready saber on ebay and I knew that with a little work I could have a great looking LED lightsaber.

I bought corbin's board, an MR sound board, and a battery pack w/ charger. Then to my horror, the saber had huge bottlenecks that I grinded out however the grip section only has a 1/2 inch hole for wires and i didn't want to take a chance by drilling it. So now the only thing that fits is the battery pack. Oh well... at least I have a reason to make another lightsaber...

The brass button sits on a 6mm square push putton switch and I have it set up so that if you bump it during dueling it won't flicker the LED. There is an internal recharge port because I didn't want to drill a hole in a movie accurate saber. All of the sections unscrew allowing easy access to the components. And time will tell if my homemade heatsink is pulling enough heat away.

I have a blue high current luxeon K2 in the saber but I'm not happy with the color, I will be changing it to a royal blue color, more like the ones in episode 3. Overall though I'm really happy with how it turned out.

Yah, the #48 filter ive found to be the most like Windus actual saber. Theres a different purple filter i like better because its more purpley and less violet, but its too dark and doesnt glow as well. As for the filter that madcow used, i found that one to be too pink, it was more of a fusia than purple.

We use white LED's with the LEE filters. It makes a really great color but as you may have guessed it is not quite as bright as a straight colored LED. I will shoot some more pics of my 5 watt white with that and a few other filters and put them up later today.

Hehe I just finished my new saber. I finally got to use corbin's board I bought in august. No sound on this one, pics to come later tonight...

Edit: Added pics.

3watt Green LED. RLSA saber converted to led by me. It has corbin's board and a covertec wheel. This is seriously the most comfortable hilt I've held. Has a great weight and balance to it. Also as my first pic might suggest, 3/4" LED blades are the way to go 8)

This saber is very close to a design I had sent RLSA and though it has a few differences when it was put up I knew I had to have it. Its fantastic.

Well, here's my royal blue Star/O saber. It's a 1.25" diameter sinktube with a frosted, thin walled, 1" diameter blade that uses Corbin's blade film and one of Corbin's shouldered tips.
http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e235/Spencer_P/royalblueignited001.jpg

The blade holder was made out of 2.5" or so of some copper coupling tube meant for 1" copper pipe. I wrapped the copper in aluminum tape to make it fit snugly in the tube. It seems to be a very sturdy setup.

The brass ring at the top of the hilt is actually a napkin ring that I found with three others at a yard sale. It fits perfectly around the enlarged part of the tube.
http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e235/Spencer_P/Lonassaber002.jpg

Overall, it's a very simple design, good for dueling with. The smaller diameter tube gives it a good feel. The switch is actually in the endcap, so it doesn't get in the way of one's hands.
http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e235/Spencer_P/Lonassaber001.jpg
http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e235/Spencer_P/MorothssaberandLonasswitch001.jpg

This saber uses a small cell phone knob for attaching the saber to a belt clip.
I first built one of these with a red Star/O, but I didn't use a brass ring or a cell phone clip, and I left the tube at 12" instead of cutting it down to 10". I think the blue one turned out better.

james3
10-17-2006, 10:16 AM
Sweet setup spence. How do you keep the end cap on?

Spencer_P
10-17-2006, 10:26 AM
Thanks James. The endcap stays on well because I cut the tube with a tube cutter. The cutter sort of pushed in the edge of the tube all the way around, giving it a rounded look. The pushed-in edge keeps the prongs on the cap from sliding/falling out of the tube.

On my red saber, the endcap tends to fall out, since I didn't cut the end at all.

Gunblueing is the dye firearms manufacturers use on steel to give it the "blackish-blue" coloring and texture. It's nasty smelling, messy as hell, hard to clean up, but it DYES the material the color. A regular sized bottle will last a long time for sabers...just a dab will do ya!

naashar
10-28-2006, 11:29 AM
Correct on all counts, everyone. I did indeed destroy the big gold button, Maul, but when you build 'em for Go, not just for Show, it happens. That's a tip, Kiddies. And as James astutely pointed out, at less than .80 a pop, I think I can afford to be more than rough to get what I want.

The gunbluing is a smelly thing, but i couldn't ask for a richer effect on those recharge ports. Personally, I wouldn't use it on large portions, but for small applications, like the aforementioned ports, it's perfect. Use Q-Tips to apply, follow the preparation directions (metal retains a lot of our skin's oils), and blue away!

The glue on the original big button was a beast to remove, and as such, I'll be going with a true custom job on it, once I've decided on a proper replacement for the entire area.

**edit: The small circles where the two gold prongs are? The black is the gunblue. Thanks to those who praised the work! :)

the batteries were pretty low when i took these. and the blade flies out of the emitter when i spin it so that will need a bit of sellotape around the bottom . . . when i go out and find the tip and mirror disc tomorrow. i really should have bothered to glue them in.

i'm generally impressed with it since i hacked most of the bits off of it off. next up to do is change the switch to a 'click' on/off on and use some sheet alu to cover the hole and cut the tops off of the T grips as they are so awful to hold. pictures of its production progress on this topic http://thecustomsa.web133.discountasp.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1488

I love how it has the thin neck. Best twirling saber I have next to my curved hilt. Not sure if it will get Lux converted, but some upgrades are in it's future (namely paint at the least). Thankfully I can tell that upgrades shouldn't be all too hard since the electronics are a machined insert that can be slid out.

In more detail. All of the parts come off. The windvane and emitter slide off. The pommel is detachable too. The rest is one piece. The electronics are all held in by a small set screw in the back. The plug starts at the top of the grenade and the electronics end at the bottom of the clamp.

That's a fair amount of room. If I had a new mount machined I certainly could get more than the basic resistor and LED in. For now though I'm just thinking of painting the windvane section brass so that it's correct. I'll remove the black on the emitter while I'm at it.

Truck bed spray liner can be purchased at any auto parts store or I think wally world carries it. Practice on some scrap material first to get the feel for the way the stuff sprays and get some rubber gloves to keep it off your hands the stuff doesn't wash off it wears off. :(

I've been lurking around for a month or two. I ordered and recieved my first saber parts from Tim last week (more on mine later). My wife is asking for one, and wants "some black stuff" on hers. I think that spray on bedliner is the right way to go. Do-Clo, how well does the bedliner come off when you remove the tape? Should I remove the tape when the spray is wet or dry? How thick of a coat is reasonable?

supertrogdor
11-07-2006, 11:33 AM
best case scenario Kilted Jedi is to do a bit of practice painting on some pieces of scrap that you have handy, if nothing else is available you may even practice on pop can. i have done some of the truck bed liner spray on pvc overlays before so taping hasn't been an issue for me, but i generally do at least 3 coats to get a nice even thick coating.

Does the surface need to be prep-ed for the bed liner (other than making sure it's clean)?

Yes. 320-400 should do you just fine.

supertrogdor
11-07-2006, 11:39 AM
again, practice makes perfect
clean is good, i scuffed the pvc overlay with a pretty rough grit sandpaper which gave an additional reason for lots of coats, as i needed to cover the scratches sufficiently to get an even coating. Not having personally done any spraying directly on alluminum, i would also refer to DoClo or Firebird for thier expertise

Firebird21
11-07-2006, 11:45 AM

I tend to pull of the tape as it dries. I didn't want it too harden up to much.

I just re tape when i need to add coats.

Do-Clo
11-07-2006, 06:51 PM
I use a scotch brite pad to scuff the sink tube before I spray the truck bed coating. James is correct remove the tape while the spray is still wet it will come off cleaner. If you wait till it dries then take a xacto knife and cut around all the edges to sperate the tape from the spray. I use one good coat on the grips.

Mi Gin Gonn
11-08-2006, 08:09 PM
yup, exactly. you'll get "frilly" edges if you don't pull it off in time. Ultra got me hooked on the Rhino Lining but it takes a little practice to get used to. it ain't spraypaint.

for grips, don't overdo the coating. between 3 and 4 will work...anything more than that is overkill.

Do-Clo
11-11-2006, 10:13 AM
The graflex clamp came from ebay along with the circuit board. As for the switch I used a small slide switch and filed the hilt to recess it then filed the small slot in the clamp to make room for the switch. I really like the way it turned out the switch doesn't spoil the look of the saber. The grips are cut down anakin aotc grips and then I sprayed plastic dip paint over them and the grip section. I drilled and tapped a allen set screw in the bottom of the emitter. I wanted this one to be as clean as possible.

It looks very good Do-Clo. You're making it very hard to rival your work.

Unfortunately my saber won't be Powder Coated until next week. Then I have to take it back, polish it, and bring it back for Clear Powder Coating. So it may not be until the end of nex week, or the begining of the week after.

Then it will be onto sound.

I may yet get to that point. I'm still working out the design (probably more complex than a first saber should be). Part of this whole project was for me to get started using the dremel my grandfather left me.

I haven't had enough time to get the design all worked out yet, I have it in my head, but I'm still trying to figure out the details, requirements.

I wired up the saber last weekend (its a nice quiet project while my son and his mom take their nap).

Thanks for all of your kind words.

The button is a graflex button I found on ebay and the black push switch sold here.

1.Install the the black switch into the MHS.
2.Take the red "eye" out of the silver housing.
3.Grind the plastic nut just a little bit. Enough to fit it inside the silver part of the graglex button. You could even epoxy it for good measure.
4.Thread on the the silver housing over the push switch.
5.A dab of epoxy on the bottom of the red eye.

That should do it.

I'll build another one and take pictures later on. But now I have to sign my son up for basketball.
