View Full Version : Kids saber?

Does anyone know where to get or what the name is of a cute little gizmo that would make for a neat start to a kids saber. It is a thin poly tube with a single strand of el-wire through the center attached to a black metal housing that holds the inverter and 3 AA batteries. The "blade" is about 24" and the "hilt is about 10". I wouldn't mind making a few sabers for my son's friends but I can't really spend a fortune either.

Does this help? Anyone? If this is a forbidden topic just let me know. I just can't stand it when I don't know what a part is.

That almost looks like a mini-mag lite.

You know, the second I typed that, I had a vision of twisting the blade to get it to come on.

I saw a reference to a similar device that was listed a rave party light or maybe light wand (I think it was called something like that), I may have seen it in my quest for EL stuff before I found Tim's shop.

Maybe I will have to design something like this for the little ones.

I thought it was really neat. I have tried searching for this thing by all kinds of names but no luck. The first time I saw I thought about the maglite thing too, but the switch was a little button on the bottom with a rubber cover more like the big maglites.

Tim, if you think it's a cool idea and want to explore the possibility of making up somthing like this I am pretty sure I can talk the owner into letting you borrow it for a while to spec it. He has been hounding me about a yellow saber anyway[:)]

I have one of these.

This is the inner part of the mini-saber that Jedigear used sell. They have been closed for a few months now and I don't know if they're coming back. http://www.jedigear.com/

Here is a picture of it w/ the saber "shell"

The shell comes off and you get what is pictured in the original post.

Here is the shell compared to a Parksaber Inertia:

I believe that they were also sold at the Parksabers booth at Comic Con last year.

that would be a great option for the younglings tim. a lil less dangerous than givin them a l3 saber. but then again we can make them el ones instead till theyre older and wont go shining the l3 in their friends face and fryin the eyeballs out. lol

Tim you have the stuff on the shelf for a youngling ligtsaber. I built one using the 1.25" sinke tube, el blade holder and aluminum end cap. You could make a 20" el blade and a 9 volt battery would power the saber. Or you could just put together a youngling saber kit, either way you would not have to stock any speacial stuff to make one.

Do-Clo this started as a hunt to find what this thing is called and who manufactures it so I could use them for a lightsaber building project for a group of kids at my local YMCA. It really has everything to do with cost and trying to keep it as low as possible since it comes out of my pocket[;)] I have since built a handful of kids sabers with Tim's stock in 1-1/4" pipe but as you know even with 24" blades your still spending about 60 to 70 bucks to get 'er done. I am guessing that this thing is about 20 bucks or so, and that is just a wild long shot guess but it would bring the cost down huge since you could spruce up the handle or use materials to make hilts over it like in the other pics.
And of course as I have stated several times before around this forum like, Lan I think that EL IS the way to go with little ones, I wouldn't want my little munchkin's burning their eyes out looking down at a LED.

If you use the lowes special design for the blade holder you could build an el saber for about $35.00. I realize that you are looking for a low cost idea but it is hard to get to the $20 mark, and I just wanted to point out that the material is on the shelf to do a low cost saber from Tim's parts.

those little guys on the beginning of this thread were about 50 dollars, if i remember correctly. the biggest expense of a saber is in the blade, but you might be able to get some polyC that is small enough to just have one strand of wire in it. not trying to take business away from tim or anything like that, maybe he could even get it and sell it, but i think that would be the best way. use tiny 9v inverters that are made to power just a few feet of wire, then get polyC that is only big enough for 1 or maybe 2 strands. should be cheap and would be great for kids.

Its discussing ways of getting around using my items that irks me. Or asking if they can be bought someplace else.

thanks, tim. i just didn't want that to sound the wrong way. it sounds like people want kid's sabers for cheap, but i know that you don't sell little polyC or inverters, so i didn't want you to think i was trying to direct business away, just trying to share what i thought could be a good and cheap idea [8D]

Ambo the 1.25" sink tube saber that I made for my nephw was great it fit in his hands well and it is the right size for him. Most of the parts came right off Tim's shelves with the exception of the activation box which is a pvc fiting drilled out to slide on the sink tube.

Ambo, I have been pretty much doing kids sabers non stop for a while now and you can make an awsome EL saber for a little one with:
1-1.25" sink tube hilt kit (1.25hiltkit)
1-Machined aluminum end cap (mendcap)
1-PolyC Tube (40PolyC)
1-Acrylic Tip (HalfBall)
1-1/4" Mono plug (M/plug)
1-Install Set Screw (SetScrew)
10 feet of 2.5mm High Bright Long Life (2.5mmHB)
2 feet of HD polyethylene (PolyE)

The end cap will work with the kit but if your little one wants to play rough the machined end cap is a bargain to not have the guts fall out with every hard hit. I have done Lime, Aqua, Pink, Purple, Green, and Yellow and the Lime and Aqua are the most movie like colors but the yellow, pink, and purple are really nice green is more like a teal, kinda cool but I don't know if I'll do another one.

I am still thinking in the long run that these little sabers would make for a big hit since it has a small inverter and the one small strand of wire.

Get the modular kit and a complete blade. Then the vast majority is done for you. The rest would be the electronics... if you're not up to soldering get someone older to do it.

Ambo-No prob, enjoy your build.

suit-I was hunting for what the actual manufacture name is. I understand that there was a person who was using these as a base to make "padawan" kids sabers and has since closed up shop but I typically like to know what parts are and where they are avaliable so if I need replacement parts I can get them without much trouble. After enough time in the electronic service business I have learned that it is a good idea of knowing where your stuff comes from.

I saw those Lan, reminds me of the PVC sabers I made in the past. I think he ended up selling 10 or so in his first batch.(Congrats Ultra) As I am sure you remember though, I am not comfortable with kids using LED sabers. I have no doubt that Ultra secured the blade to the hilt as I do not remember it saying it was removeable, might even of used PVC cement or something simmilar so that thing isn't coming out. With my kids and their friends they love their EL sabers, they have the colors they want and it is all in a nice 1 1/4" hilt which is a great size for them and they recently learned that they can pull their blades and trade so they have different colors on their hilt[8D] I know that I am in the minority on the EL/LED issue and as far as adult sabers in the house the LED's far exceed the EL's, but as long as these little guys are smart enough to figure out how to take something apart but dumb enough to look in the beam, I'm sticking with the EL[:)]
