anybody remember the first lightsaber toys? they were hilarious! an inflatable transparent yellow blade, like a swimming pool toy, clipped onto a flashlight. it was supposed to be safe for kids to whack each other with, but of course after only a few minutes of use, it would get a slow leak or two. i don't think they made more than 1 run of these as they were so lame.

I remember those barely, I still have my Darth Vader red ESB lightsaber has holes on each end so when you swing it it would whoosh. lived through me, storage at my mom's attice and soon as I give it to my son crack there goes the tip, and then smack big ol' crack in the hilt.

A couple years later they came out with a sweet lightsaber (at the time). It was basically an orange plastic flashlight with a semi-transparent plastic tube. As a 9 year old I tried to paint the bulb red.
... boy we've come a long way.

I had one of them. It may still be in my moms attic, if I find it I will post a picture.

oh yes, please do. they are impossible to find. a generation of boys raised on a toy sword that gets softer the more you play with it and they wonder why they need Viagra in their 30s? I popped mine right away, and then i cut the handle off my wiffle ball bat and taped the rest to the lightsaber flashlight for a while. kind of a prototype of an LED saber in an odd way.

over on the force.net LED Q & A board Ultra posted one of those old oversized ones with the colored blade & the 4 holes in the top that made a lame whirring sound when swung around. If you were a kid when these came out, they were about 3X bigger than you were!

i not only remember the yellow inflatable ones, there were some that had a semi-transparent nylon blade with a colored tip on the end, attached to a black flashlight "hilt." the color didn't work of course. anybody remember those? hmm...now that I think of it, one of those blades would probably have looked pretty good with a Luxeon shining thru it. too bad they didn't exist in 1984.

Ah yes the golden years.....Transformers, Masters of the Univers, and the Black flashlight hilt saber with the red or green gel to color the light.
It was funny cuz you wack the sabers together, and the blade tube would get small creases and dents after the first 5 min. Then it looked like junk. These were before the ones that made the swishing noise...I think this was 82 or 83...been a while. I always wanted another one, but they didnt stay out very long. Then they came out the the lame ones that didnt light up at all. We have come a long way. [:)]

Hey I know I'm a lil late to this discussion but check out what I found.
It is missing the blade though. What do you think it is worth?

"This is not the lightsaber you are looking for..."
Or is it?
The label says that both are 1995, but they sound similar to this discussion here. Maybe they did a re-release?
Both still work, but are (sadly) starting to fall apart. Still make the same four noises they have only ever done! The impact detector in my green one fails to function anymore though, and both blades have cracked. One of my friends actually has another one green one, same make and year and everything, by the choke and the blade holder are different. Do any of you guys know why?

The clash sensor probably wore out or just failed, or there may be a loose wire somewhere.

The 1977 sabers were more like yellow balloon blades, that you had to inflate. I had one way back when.

Hmm, after reading everyone else's posts, I'm surprised that the BLADE didn't pop. They probably couldn't risk using anything harder than balloons.

In response to your question e13azar, I don't exactly know, but I'm sure ANY fan of Star Wars is willing to pay more than what it is worth to have it in their collection.

It was made out of vinyl. It was OK for its time.

Thanks Forgetful Jedi Knight! Also, could the reason for the Kenner's saber rareness be because many owners chucked them out when they got punctured (no offence to the awesomeness of the saber)

I also have one of these. It's a yoda and has phrases he says everyonce in awhile. My sensor or something else was also bad on mine. Opened it up and it was just a loose wire. Works great now.
