View Full Version : Finally going to get started on my new MHS

A few weeks ago I started a thread in the gallery about a possible new saber.

I originally started with this render using Arkai's MHS parts:

http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x170/ErDanGill/Star%20Wars%20Stuff/Serenity/ErDanGill223.jpg

Then MaverickJsmith rendered it again for me:

http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x170/ErDanGill/Star%20Wars%20Stuff/Serenity/lightsaberforerdangill2um0.png

And mostly Tim but a few others helped me make it a reality:

The MHS parts are powder coated in white, save for the grooves on the double threaded hilt #4. The pc is very well done as well. I am very pleased the way it came out. If you are unsure about it, don't be, worth every penny I think. I did change the pommel for a simpler one as I want the focus of this saber on the shroud and grip area. I also have a new 4.8 volt rechargeable pack, a Lux 3 royal blue, MR Luke ROTJ sound board, a King of Parts clamp and computer strip. Not sure exactly what I'm gonna use for the black are but I have a few options. I also ordered this (https://www.onlinemetals.com/merchant.cfm?pid=12849&step=4&showunits=inches&id=946&top_cat=60) aluminum tube, not sure how well it will work, as this will be my first time using this product. But even with the powder coating it fits the MHS very well. As always thanks for looking, Er Dan.

Nice one!

Aye, love the white and how the main hilt piece is striped. Very cool, definitely makes me wanna try the PC thing. Epoxy appliance spray paint is starting to tick me off lol.

Hey everybody thanks for all the compliments.
Just a quick update, the MR Luke ROTJ sound board I had wanted to put in ended up being too long and tall to fit. So I swapped boards with my sons saber, for the Obi sound card, fitment was much better:D

Also please don't laugh, but this was the first time I tried building a "chassis" for the battery pack and sound board. I tried using a 1.25" sink tube first and it ended up not turning out like I wanted. So I ran over to my LHS, and bought some sheet styrene, and cut a strip long enough to act as a shelf for everything to sit on. I also found a quick disconnect with three leads on it so I can disconnect the recharge port incase I ever need to disassemble the hilt. Any way here's a pic.

Thanks for looking Er Dan.

Not bad Er Dan. I kinda like that. It insulates and it's lightweight. Does it seem strong enough to be slid in and out of a hilt a few times without breaking?

Absolutely, the styrene I used is about an 1/8th of an inch thick. I've already had it in and out of the hilt numerous times while I was setting up the wiring itself.

Quick update,
Almost finished still working on the shroud, just want it to be perfect so I've practiced three times on sink tubes. I think I'm finally comfortable enough to cut on the aluminum tubing I got. Otherwise everything is together. Just not sure I like where the switch is mounted on the clamp, but it is out of the way. Also tried the dual film method (double wrap of Corbin film + 4 feet of polyp), very impressed with how well it looks.

Sorry for the quality, I just couldn't get the white to photograph well.

Looking good, I myself would of put the CTClip knob on the other side, but then again you could be left handed so that would be understandable but for a right handed person the knob would be in the way.

Very sharp man, cant wait to see it with the shroud.

Thanks for the compliment Hasid.
As to the CT knob, I am right handed, but I wear my saber on the left, it's also why the switch is on the right side of the clamp. Just wish I had mounted it a little "cleaner".

ITs not to bad, just dont do this to mount a switch and a place for a speaker in the same section.

Whew busy day today, so close to finishing this one. Then I had to go and change a few things around.

What started as a simple switch upgrade kinda snowballed into a rebuild. I wasn't satisfied with the way I mounted the switch so I was scrounging through my junk drawer and found a slider that was about half the size of the one I was using.
http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x170/ErDanGill/Star%20Wars%20Stuff/Serenity/DSCF2123.jpg

So I had too figure out a way to cover the old switch hole. I used to build models, and I have an abundance of sheet styrene from all the scratch builds I did. And since my saber is white all I did was cut a section of .030" thickness to fit and JB welded it on.
http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x170/ErDanGill/Star%20Wars%20Stuff/Serenity/DSCF2113.jpg

And since the saber was already apart, I redid the whole electronics package. Mainly so that I could have a better resonance chamber for the speaker. Switched out the AA holder, for a AAA pack, and built a new chassis out of a 1.25" sink tube.
http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x170/ErDanGill/Star%20Wars%20Stuff/Serenity/DSCF2122.jpg

And a quick teaser for the grips and shroud, before I ship the shroud to Tim for powder coating. I did build the shroud out of the aluminum I got, but it just felt wrong, too large of a diameter and definitely too much wall thickness. I picked the best "practice" shroud I built from about six 1.50" sink tubes, and cleaned it up and tossed it on. The grips are black craft foam, not sure why they look blue in the pics though.

All the more reason to pour on the love... that saber's gonna look something fierce... and as clarence thomas said: "the rewards for self-indulgence are not nearly as great as the rewards for self-discipline."

Er Dan Gill

And what a lesson in self dicipline this one has been. I could have flown through it like all my other sabers, but I wanted this one to be as perfect as I could get it. Just wish I had a better sound card for it, oh well, plenty more to build.http://www.camaroz28.com/forums/images/smilies/metal.gif

From concept to reality its been a fun build. Last pic until I get the parts back from Tim.

See? now look at that. That is a thing of beauty. I could be in anyone's home, star wars nut or not... That, right there, is the epitome of "Labor or Love".

I'm glad you took your time with that one, Er Dan. It was certainly worth the wait - just to see it even...

Congratulations!

Holy thread revival batman!!

So I have a Obi pommel coming from Acerocket's next run. I was thinking about upgrading this one anyway with an US2.0.
Never cared for the clamp on this one, but overall It's my favorite. I like the different look it gives without the clamp.

Here's the rebuild idea, let me know whatcha think.

I'm getting one of those pommels with his run too and I'm going for similar lines like you. I think the pommel itself adds alot to the hilt. Don't go overboard... your updated design looks good.

This isn't set in stone by any means.
I have four sabers I could put it on, seeing as this was my favorite, starting there was obvious. I just wanted to get the masters opinions before I did anything.

As much as I love (and want) Acerocket's Obi pommel, I'm not entirely sure it suits this saber. I do, however, love the mix of white and chrome.

Er Dan Gill
11-07-2008, 10:42 AM
Yeah, that was kind of the trademark for this hilt, no fancy names or anything. I just refer to it as the "White Saber".
When I first did that render, I really liked but I'm kinda leaning against it now. Working on a render for the "Red Saber" with it right now.

*edit*
Finished a quick render for the "Red Saber"

I say go with the Obi pommel on the white one but keep the clamp. It'll cover the "blandness" as Sairon said.
