Has anyone tried to use GunBlue on their MHS?

Cleaning out my garage yesterday, and I came across a kit of the stuff. forgot i had it. Was tempted to give it a shot, but was curious if anyone else has tried it?

I have seen pictures of the results before, it apparently takes to aluminum quite well and has been used to weather sabers and other props not a few times.

Gunblueing is a labor of love for sabers. JJshumpert has done it, but it's a PITA. Just have Tim powdercoat it.

Gunblue is a chemical stain that gives firearms the distinctive blue black color. It is available as a kit for "reblueing" firearms that have been weathered.

That would look awesome if you blued a saber, then roughed it up to look weathered.

I think you should try it.

I'm not sure which one will end up blued

I used bluing on my first TCSS saber, and I love everything about it...
Except the smell...

Honestly your saber will forever smell like a rotten egg. Every time you use it you will get the smell on your hands. It was worse on the brass parts that I antiqued, but even the aluminum parts have a distinct odor. I imagine that if you sprayed a clear coat on after you antiqued the parts you might trap some of the smell in. I can't tell you for sure though because I opted not to spray the parts. I can also tell you that the end result looks NOTHING like powder coating, Sorry Maul, so if you have your heart set on that authentically aged look, there is no alternative. However, I do agree with maul that it was a pain, and not something I will consider for many projects.

hmmm yeah that would be hard to get over. also to that when i use the black grip stuff it really makes my hands black and well people usually want to avoid using that saber in all honesty. but yeah thought i like to add that bit of info to this.

Check page 7 of the MHS gallery. It is near the top.

A few more words about gun blue. I'm not sure if the MHS parts have some sort of protective coating on them or if they are just somewhat covered in residue from the manufacturing process, but the gun blue doesn't work on them at all without a bit of sanding first. Without it, the parts will blacken very unevenly and in unpredictable ways, they will take on a rough almost rusty texture, and the black sections will easily rub off. A quick sanding will prevent this. I had a lot of trouble preparing the grooves in the emitter, and you can see that at the time if this photo those grooves don't appear very dark at all. I have since sanded them again and reapplied the gun blue, and now it looks much better. I see no point in using gun blue to completely blacken the aluminum when you could more easily achieve that effect with a powder coating, but if you want it to look aged and antiqued then the bluing is the very best choice.
