Thats crazy!

Be great when it's available in colors too! But 200 lumens at only 1000ma? Not bad.... And not more voltage than the old K2's, either.

Yeah, these are Rebels in K2 form essentially. These have been trickling out to place for maybe a month. They still lag behind the Crees and Seouls a bit, but there are some benefits.

Max 1.5A... so they have headroom above the 200 lumens if you can power it. Also LumiLEDs is nicer on color cosistancy.

Not sure if this will have colors though... it'd be nice to get the Rebel die in K2's though.

when I want to do a purple I may just have to use one of those with a lee filter.

Sorry mars, should of checked the forums sooner.

Why??? The Crees and Seouls are still slightly better. It's not like his money was wasted...

The Crees and Seoul's get 240 lumens @ 1A. That's their max current being run in spec, but to beat that you have to push more current trough the TFFC K2.

It's not a waste, Mars. It's like saying having a v1.2 Plecter sucks when v2 came out... ;)

Although it's true, I sold those to afford some v2.61s and v3s later on... :D

I like your comparison, Nova.

My Cree XR-E Q5 at 9$ shipping included will definately be a nice upgrade.

I just somewhat wanted to encourage Luxeon over their copycat competitors...

Competition is good because if anything LumiLEDs is trying to catch up and copy Cree and Seoul. They had the LED market and sat on their butts too long.

Does that remind you of Intel?

Does that remind you of Intel?

Sure does, and for a while AMD was making them work for their share. Now Intel is kicking butt again and if I've read right AMD is and will be floundering for a while.

I think it will happen in a similar fashion here. LumiLEDs has been doing Luxeons in such huge quanities for a while that they do have the benefits of a quality manufacturing process. That's why I mentioned earlier that the Luxeons have nicer tint. In my experience LumiLEDs is tighter on the binning.

This is really cool. So I guess from what I didnt see, they dont have stars for these brighter k2's yet. I sure hope that made sense.

Apparently the domes under certain batches liked to crack more under hard driving than they found acceptable. I'm not worried... it was only certain batched that used flawed epoxy.

My little birdie told me,

"Dear Customer,
We have identified an issue with certain LUXEON Rebel (with TFFC) and LUXEON K2 with TFFC LEDs manufactured from WW0744 to WW0802. As a result, we are initiating this Return Request Action. This request does not impact production of all of the LUXEON Rebel and LUXEON K2 emitters; only the parts identified below are affected.

Situation:
We have identified a batch of non-conforming epoxy material used in the production of LUXEON Rebel (with TFFC) and LUXEON K2 with TFFC products manufactured from WW0744 to WW0802. This non-conforming epoxy material has the potential to cause the TFFC die to crack and fail during short-term operation. We have seen a failure rate that exceeds our specifications and, subject to the provisions of Philips Lumileds Standard Terms and Conditions of Sale or any executed sales agreement, are taking the necessary steps to resolve this issue.

Containment:
Philips Lumileds has temporarily suspended production of LUXEON Rebel (with TFFC) and LUXEON K2 with TFFC emitters. This production hold will remain in place until we have resolved the issue.

Date of production hold: WW0802.

Material disposition:
Philips Lumileds recommends all part numbers listed in the table above within the affected date codes are returned.

Unused inventory
Products should be returned to Philips Lumileds via the standard Return Materials Authorization (RMA) process.

Deployed material
In our internal testing, we have found that under normal operating conditions, the affected products experience infant mortality failure within the first 24 hours of operation.

Preliminary failure rate data suggests failure rates of 10-30%. The reliability of the affected products that survive the first 24 hours is under investigation. A follow-up notification will be issued as results become available.

Timing for Replacement Material
The verification of exact root cause of this quality issue is under rigorous investigation. We anticipate that our production line will resume sometime in March 2008. Further communication updates will be provided as it becomes available. We are continuing to stage material before the TFFC production line, so that we can rapidly restart production once we have proven/qualified corrective action.

We will provide updates to you as additional information becomes available.

Thank you for your attention in this matter.

Sincerely,
(Name Redacted)

This is not my email, but one posted on the candlepowerforums. Seems there are some VERY upset people who have Luxeon products right now.

Oh, WW0744 to WW0802 means any LED produced from the 44th week of 2007 till the 2nd week of 2008. How many LEDs can they make in 10 weeks?

Hasid Lafre
01-28-2008, 01:30 AM
billions?????

Novastar
01-29-2008, 03:13 AM
If they made 5000 per day (5 working days per week), that could mean up to 250,000.

But then again... there are so many factors that can play in. Even politics. ;) They could even be using this to "stall" buyers, throw off competition... or many other things.

Anyhow, perhaps even SOME of the batches... will be just fine. Only time would tell. And, maybe they make more or less LEDs that are these specific types and bins... per day (don't forget, they make other LEDs!! Lux III, K2 "normal", V, etc.).

But I think "billions" would be a bit of an over-shoot though. Even if we counted ALL models of the LEDs made in 10 weeks by LumiL. ;)
