View Full Version : Anyone want their lightsaber built in 3d?

Greetings all.

I would like to know if anyone would like their Lightsaber design done in 3D.

I use sketchup, and tayjuswinn's MHS Components he made for it (many thanks), and can crank a saber out rather quickly. If it's using the standard MHS parts I can whip one up in about 15 minutes. If it's using a mix of custom parts and MHS parts, it can range from about an hour to several. If it's all custom, about a day.

I can design custom sabers as one piece, or MHS style so they can come apart for battery changing, repairs and such.

This is a free service that I am offering. I do it for myself for the enjoyment of making lightsabers, and I'd like to be able to do it for others.

A few examples of my work

Kyle's saber from Jedi Knight (yeah I know, it's really Que Rahn's saber)

A custom I've had in my head for a while

A random saber I made

If anyone is interested, feel free to PM me. Or you can reach me by Yahoo or MSN.

At this time, I can start working on a design sent to me immediately, but that will change when the spring semester of school at my local college starts.

Designs sent to me should have dimensions. Please, I beg you, it's so hard to eyeball dimensions and get them right. I can do it, but it will greatly increase the ammount of time it will take to finish your design, and most likely will not look exactly the same.

Many thanks to tayjuswinn for making his MHS Components for Sketchup.

Anyway, shop is open :D

Maverick,

Did you see this thread: http://forums.thecustomsabershop.com/showthread.php?t=3671 ?

I posted the components I developed in SketchUp for myself as well for folks to piece the components together. The parts probably aren't exactly accurate, and the "crosshairs" are essential to aligning everything, but I'm hoping folks find it useful.

I might take you up on that offer maverick, any chance that missing components could be added for download though? Such as the Thin neck? Might help with visulisations. :D

I'm so sorry tayjuswinn! I forgot to add credit for you Sketchup components! After trying to figure out how to post pictures in the forum, it slipped my mind, but that's no excuse. Many appologies.

I'll fix my post right now.

As for the missing components, claws would be neat :D I have a friend who wants me to make him a saber, but I don't have claws, and my previous attempt at making them wasnt the best.

And Tom, I love that saber of yours in your sig :D Great use of that thin neck. I pretty sure I can make it in sketchup, from what I've seen, I'm pretty sure I can make it in Sketchup accurately.

Thanks, but which one lol.

I intend on making both at somepoint :D

I intend on getting money to buy the parts at some point as well XD

The top one :D To tell you the truth, when I first saw your sig..I saved it onto my computer. I really like that saber of yours :D

If you are interested, give me a ring on yahoo or msn. I've been looking at your design for a while now and I'm pretty sure I can hammer it out in about a day.

Well, I'm hoping more people get interested :D

Thanks! I'm not sure an the accuracy of the Emitter shroud length, but go by the picture rath than the labeled dimension ;)

Hey Tom, quick question.

The sabers almost done. Since I have to make the thin neck section, do you want me to match it to the picture or make it to its actual dimensions?

Tom Starkiller
01-06-2008, 03:05 PM
Make it to its actual dimensions please. :D

Can't wait to see it :D :D :D

MaverickJsmith
01-07-2008, 01:07 PM
I finished it this morning. I couldn't get the curves on the shroud on the lower grip, I tried, but it would have taken a lot longer to finish the saber with them. So they're just angeld cuts instead. So I'm sorry I couldn't get that detail down. Other than that, I think it's the same as the picture you game me Tom.

Without further delay, I present The Phoenix

DUDE THAT'S FRACKING AWESOME!!!! THANKS!!! :D :D

It's okay about the not being able to curves, It still looks as good and is damned accurate :D

Thanks Maverick :D

MaverickJsmith
01-07-2008, 01:53 PM
I'm glad you like it :D

I can also send you dimensions for making the shrouds and whatnot, might help when you build it. Sketchup makes things in 1:1 scale.

And speaking of scale, she comes in at just over 13 inches. She's mighty big.

I hope I helped you to get closer to making this beauty :D

Tom Starkiller
01-07-2008, 02:03 PM
I couldn't insert enough smilies, so: :D :D :D :D

I thought she was big when I drew up my latest two sabers XD Ah well.

I'll sure get this thing made one day, once I've had expirience building others. Or when the next saber design contest comes around XD

Please do send me the scale, will be interesting to see. (Insert another smile here)

MaverickJsmith

Here are the dimensions

http://img511.imageshack.us/img511/3554/tomstarkillerslightsabeic9.png

http://img511.imageshack.us/img511/3893/tomstarkillerslightsabeba3.png

http://img511.imageshack.us/img511/2948/tomstarkillerslightsabeeq3.png

I hope you can still read the dimensions. When I resize my Sketchup screenshots, I have to resize them from 1900x1200. My laptop screen has a crazy high resolution

The height dimensions for the buttons in the last picture are 1/16". Sketchup has a set font size thats fixed no matter the zoom so the text stays the same size.

Is there anything else I can help you with tom? (insert smiley)

Tom Starkiller
01-07-2008, 03:08 PM
LOL, tiny writing, can you actually read it on that last pic?

Edit, actually, would you be able to make Twin please? (The other saber in my sig.) I'm not sure on exact dimension of the main hilt, as it turned out to be a custom. (Didin't realise when I designed it XD ) I'm thinking of making it my first saber, so it would be cool to see how it looks in 3D :)

Thanks Maverick, I love it :D

MaverickJsmith
01-07-2008, 03:14 PM
Alrighty. And no problem (insert smiley with shades here since I dont know the code for it)

When you finally make it send us all pictures :D I want to see this creation that I helped to make.

If there's anything I can do for you let me know.

Shop is open once again :D

And this one I made just for fun

http://img102.imageshack.us/img102/8278/tomstarkillerslightsabelk4.png

Hope you enjoy 8 )

And now for a little announcement. I will only be taking one design at a time. This is for 2 reasons. 1: so im not backlogged with a bunch of sabers, which leads into the second reason, 2: so people aren't stuck waiting for me to start their design.

This is intended for fairness, as well as me not killing myself making a bunch of sabers in a few days time @_@

School will also be starting for me in roughly 2 weeks and I will most likely busy. Sabers will probably take around a week instead of a few days or a single day.

Also, I restate my request that designs have dimensions. I'm not reffering to anyone in particular, it'll just make it easier for everybody (and for me n_n), and you'll get your saber render quicker.

Well, shop is open once again n_n

Man, I am retarded. I can't even get started getting things on my screen. I downloaded everything I need (I think) and I guess I'm having problems importing the files of the saber pieces into SketchUp. What EXACTLY do I need to do to get it working somewhat right? Computer stuff might as well be written in Japanese because I can't understand a thing.

MaverickJsmith
01-10-2008, 04:52 PM
I think we need a topic about how to set up sketchup lol

SEMI LONG POST ALERT!

Okay :D First, unzip the file to wherever. I'd suggest the My Documents folder since sketchup wants to look there anyway. You might have to make a separate folder for the files I don't remember.

To start, go to file, click on Open, and pick a pommel. You'll have to flip them over. Right click and say flip, on blue direction. Now there'll be a handy set of crosshairs on the pommel. Hit L on the keyboard or click on the pencil in the toolbar, this is the line tool. It will be your best friend. Click on the center of the crosshairs, and hit the up arrow on the keyboard, this will lock the line tool in drawing vertically. Just draw a line straight up. After you draw it it will want to start another line, just hit space. Now, go to file, import, and pick the next part you want. Put it anywhere. Hit M (this is the move tool, another friend) and change your view until you can see the crosshairs in the piece you want to add, click on the middle of the crosshairs and move the cursor over to the end of the line. You now have your part lined up. All you need to do is slide it down. Hit M again, click on the bottom edge of the piece, and hit the up arrow again. This lock the piece moving only up and down. Move the cursor to the edge of the pommel where itll connect. Bam, you just added a piece. Repeat this until you you're done making your saber.

Sometimes sketchup freaks out when you're trying to stick a piece onto your guidline. Just change the view around until it goes on correctly.

Also some of the functions are like in word, undo, redo, copy, paste.

Some of the pieces don't have crosshairs in them so you'll have to draw your own on them.

I hope I was helpful. I know it's a long read but thats the basics of it.

If you have any questions, go ahead and email me or get me on MSN or Yahoo :D

Sorry for the double post. I would have posted these up earlier but comcast decided to do maintenance and my internet ground to a halt. I had to call the find out what the heck was up.

Anyway, I present to you my latest work, Malaki Skywalker's Bryar saber.

EDIT: Malaki requested changes so here they are.

MaverickJsmith
01-11-2008, 04:22 PM
I'll most certainly do a design for you :D

Do you have a design already or just an idea?

And Malaki, I'll draw up the dimensions for you and send them to you next time your on MSN.

Maverick

I updated the zip to include the Thin neck section. If I had reliable claw dimensions, I could add the claws quickly.

http://home.comcast.net/~chrisecks/MHSLightsaber.zip

To install into SketchUp, simply Unzip into the Components directory under your SketchUp install directory. Then they're in the components palette under "MHS Lightsaber".

The Graflex clamp is an original by me. Took a short while to make. It's not exact, I had to go by picures and by eye. And the copper sink tube was interesting as well. I had to change it slightly as well. When you're doing curves on a pipe, you quickly realize, you really don't want to do them. But that's not why I changed it lol.

I also had to change a few of the dimensions because of the screws for the sink tube adapters. All in all though, I think she turned out great.

Well, I hope you like it Er Dan 8)

After many attempts to get the shroud to taper at the emitter end, I decided to leave it as it is. It simply would not work. So I appologize that I could not replicate that aspect.

Other than that, she's just like the picture that was sent to me. This was a tough build, but I feel that it turned out great. Hope you enjoy Er Dan 8)

Hey Maverick, those are great renders! But why the dull textures, is it complicated to do metallic or chromed texturing? Maya, Autocad or something else? I have Maya but it's complicated and need to take time to learn it. Would you render mine when I get all the views finished? that would be SICK!

MaverickJsmith
02-24-2008, 04:50 PM
Actually, the shroud and band with the control box, as well as the screws, are silver. Sketchup doesnt have true texture support. Autocad costs 3 grand plus. That's right, three thousand dollars. And that's for the cheapest one. I've never heard of Maya.

I'm a college student and have little to no money. I can't afford programs of Autocad caliber. Sketchup is free and works just fine for me (hey that rhymed).

I'll most definately do your design, that thing looks great. But I can't do the ray skin, itll be the same dark colour, just no pattern or texture unfortunately.

I'm looking forward to working on your design 8)

Maya is a commercial 3D modeler. Art of Illusion (http://www.artofillusion.org/index) is free. So is Blender (http://www.blender.org/) and POV-Ray (http://www.povray.org/). They're probably all a helluva lot harder to use than Sketchup (I've used all to very limited success, never tried Sketchup though). If you're really interested in 3D modeling, I'd recommend Blender - it's a powerful, feature-rich program that was originally an expensive commercial app. If you're just sorta interested, I think Art of Illusion is easier to get up and running with. POV-Ray... ugh. Will it ever have a decent modeler?

DAMN!! That saber looks sweet Mala.

Great work on your part as well Mav.

Do you think you could go back to Phoenix and create the main body of MHS parts, no sleeve/ shroud, and use this activator:

http://www.thecustomsabershop.com/SPST-Latching-Guarded-switch-with-red-button-P256.aspx

If you could do a version that's plain and one with black powder coated grip (V-groove extension), then that would be apreciated as well.

If you could also add the covertech clip, that would be need as well.

Hi :)

This is the saber im planning on building soon. It would be nice to have a 3D rendering to send to Tim for the custom work. Some of the parts i dont know the dimensions so i just took a guess, if you know the exact dimensions feel free to modify the design to correct this.

No rush on this. Whenever you get the time.
Thanks again. its really cool that your doing this for everyone and so far every one of your renders looks great.

Here's a saber I am currently working on. I am quite pleased with how it has turned out thus far, but there are some things I want to do to it and I'd certainly like to see it in 3D before I go hacking up more brass:

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b76/sixmilliondollarman/IMG_0443.jpg

All the parts currently white will be sating black, and the brass will eventually be polished up to a high luster. The pommel will also end up being sating black.

What I want to do is cut a shroud to angle down from the top of the saber, so the emitter has a "v" of sorts for an opening, but the bottom section would be further back than the top part. The shroud would cover a good portion of the foremost white piece and there would be a rib that runs the length of the body and would terminate at the rear of the saber. Convaluted, I know, but I'd be interested to see what you come up with.

As for measurements of each section, I don't have them. The saber in the picture is right at 12" long as it is right now.

what are you using for thw white ribbed section, that seems to fit inside of a 1.5 sink tube?

nice cover/sleeve by the way..

I recently just found some 1.5 brass tubing myself..along with some copper tubing that fits INSIDE a 1.5 snuggly..and a another size that fits OVER 1 .5 snuggly..

Seriously? You're the second person who said they preferred white to black for this saber. I've always preferred black to accompany brass...but I do have a white gloss epoxy.

Hell, let's see it with white and maybe it'll grow on me.

This saber turned out different than the picture I was sent. It's not 11 1/2 inches long as indicated, its actually around 9 3/4 inches long, which is close to 3.83 centimeters. Quite short.

And it's also using the new switchhole I made with accurate dimensions from Er Dan. Thanks again man 8) The switch is also accurate as well, made from blueprints for the actual switch itself.

Also, you can see I don't have a screw for the covertech knob I use. Well, my secrets out now ;)

I just cut slowly, at the proper speed, and maintain two points of contact with the sinktube when cutting. One of these days, if I can convince my finace to do it, I'll put together a picture tutorial about cutting with the Dremel.

Could we see a 3D render of the saber like it is in the pictures, but with the white pieces in a nice satin black and a brass knurled button for the activator switch? The pommel will be satin black as well. I kind of want to see how that color scheme is going to look before I dye my plastic pieces.

Thanks much!

Alright, but I'll need some more measurements than the legnth :???:

I can do it with one dimension, but I'll have to make it and constantly change it to match the photos, which will greatly delay me finishing your render.

If you can give me more specific dimensions for the details and such I'll be able to make it much, much faster and, more importantly, more accurately.

The sooner you can get those to me the faster I can get started 8)

The blurry measurement running along the narrow band is 141mm from the end of the angled cuts near the front of the saber to the vertical cut on the bottom shroud. The band is 17mm wide. The space between the bands is 17mm and the space between the bottom shroud and the bottom of the band is also 17mm.

Alrighty, thanks Jonitus. That's enough rough dimensions to get going, do you know the dimensions for the ribbed part? Or would you like just a black tube underneath?

The ribbed section is 115 mm long and 1.43" in diameter. The other white sections are 1.40" in diameter.

To answer the burning question, the white section is nothing more than bilge pump tubing. It is 1.25" ID, but I found that a bit too snug for what I wanted to do and the way I had to assemble the saber, so I cut a slit down the length of it. It will be held on by the pressure between the two brass shrouds. I think I pad like $2.50 for a foot of it cut off the roll. I bought mine at Ace hardware, but you could probably find it at other hardware stores.

Thornwolf: need to know switch placement

This saber uses an old guarded switch model I made a few months back. I didn't know they're a button inside ring of plastic

Also it uses my old thin neck model that I made by eye. Anywho, I had to move the switches down so they wouldn't interfere with the threads. I hope it still works for you Braxus.

She was a lot of fun to make, and a very unique looking saber I think.

Okay, I will reiterate once again a simple requirement I have listed twice now.

*clears throat*

All saber designs submitted must have dimensions of some sort. A total length measurement will suffice, but will make my job harder. And take longer. Don't give me the total length in a post or PM, include it on the picture please. Such as a ruler.

If I have to restate this again, I will not be a happy artist.

This is not aimed at anyone specific. But I am human, and we're creatures who hate to say something again and again

Zero Unit, you will be PMed shortly sir.

She was a heap of fun to make :D And I love the control box. On the side of the control box is a model for the 2.1mm recharge port I made a while back for Braxus's saber. It's in no way accurate, I had to make it by eye. SWAT mentioned at one point he wanted a recharge port there. Also, I managed to put a pattern on the tsuba that swat mentioned he wanted to put on it. I hope you like it SWAT :D

This monster of a saber comes in at 19.5 inches. I really don't want to face it in a fight.

I hope you like her SWAT :D

Holy Wookie dandruff!! It's gonna be a monster alright!!

Excellent job with the control box sir, it looks exactly like the one I've made, and the tsuba pattern is very close to what I have in mind, which is impressive considering that I never supplied you with any pictures of it . Although maybe 8" for the tsuba might have been something of a miscalculation on my part , it'll probably be a little smaller in diameter, but it certainly gives the Ronin the right look!

Much appreciated sir, and I'm going to have a helluva lotta fun building that one!

I'm glad you like it SWAT :D I hunted down a picture of a Tie Fighter ****pit window to make it. Though it wasnt much help lol. I was going to make the windows rounded instead of flat like they are on the inside and outside, but sketchup threw one of its fits and would not let me draw new faces for it. So it looks like that.

*Slaps sketchup with a wet noodle*

I eagerly await pictures of the completed Ronin 8)

was that made using the Saber Builder?

I talked to Ace Rocket..and he mentioned he has dimensions for a ton of parts... maybe there is a need to work this into the Saber Builder some how?

community feedback.. :)

Ya I did make that in saber builder. The ends of the hilt though I touched up in paint and made them a bit wider.

Measurements and dimensions on the builder would be sweet!:p

Alright I'll get to work on it in the near future.

Oh, fyi to everyone. I've been up for the last 36 hours. I'm going to be resting for the next several days if I can.

PS:
The black grips are actually supposed to be darker than that, and the activation box is coming straight out of the hilt, not at an angle like it appears in the above image.

Today's saber is from Tom Starkiller. He asked me to do his redesign of The Phoenix, so here she is, The Phoenix mark 2.

Hope you like her Tom 8)

Glad you like it Tom. I managed to get 2 of the standard switches into it, so the design will actually work if you make it. Don't know about the battery indicator though lol.

And sonic screwdriver eh? Sounds interesting. If you're working on that guess I'll have to finish my grand project 8)

Hello all.

I'm sure you've noticed the lack of activity in the thread here, and the lack of sabers being done. Well I'm here to shed some light on that.

Lately my life hasn't been the best, and I've been feeling down, so motivation isn't too high.

Anyone who's waiting on a render from me, please pm me, life's been a jumble so I need to know who I owe the work to.

I'm sorry to everyone who's been waiting. I know this has happened before, and once again I appologize. I know I'm not the most reliable of artists as of late.

I hope to hear from those who I'm doing designs for so I can get them done for you.

She's 1.2 inches longer than the dimensions in the picture given to me, but I tried to match it as closely as possible to it. I hope you like her olesmokey, and I'm sorry for the huge delay.

I made this with a sleeve that's a custom size, 1/32 inch thick. There's 2 reasons for this, it would make creating this easier, and you can cut the grooves into it. The curve at the top was a real challenge and took several tries before getting it the way it turned out, and even then it's not right. I tried to match the picture Nightwing gave me to the T. It's pretty close I think, it turned out well. Oh and fyi, that groove second from the top is not thinner, it just looks that way after resizing the picture.

I hope you like her Nightwing, she was a good challenge.

Dident you origionally design that one a couple years back and havent gotten to making it yet?Yeah.
It''s rather tricky. I don't have the machining/electronics experience to construct all the custom parts I'd need, and I don't have the extra cash to have it custom-built for me. So... yeah. It's just sat in my computer for the past few years. Haha.

http://img158.imageshack.us/img158/3350/lightsaberfororakaabeaulv4.png

This saber was actually an interesting challenge. orakaa's original design had two of those darned (I say darned for a reason) anti-vandal switches. I couldn't find any datasheets with the dimensions for them, so I couldn't make them in sketchup. orakka gave me the ok to use the regular one.

I hope you like, orakaa 8)

P.S. School starts in a week, so I won't be doing any new sabers for a while. Anyone who's waiting on me PM me please so I can get those sabers done for you.

Update time. School has been keeping me busy, along with some personal matters that have appeared. Also, I have an announcement.

Until I can find the time to continue doing this, I will unfortunately not be doing any more sabers. With everything that's going on the pressure is enough that the will to keep doing this isn't there. Anyone who's waiting on a saber PM me so I can get them done for you (Khuns I'll get yours done sometime soon). Anyone who's waiting on a saber and doesn't pm me is out of luck, speak up now please.

I appologize to all, but sometimes life takes a priority over hobbies.

Why do people only read the last page of a thread @.@;

Please read the announcement on the previous page. I hate to turn you guys down, but life's a little more important. I'm just clearing my backlog of requests from before school started.

I really thank you guys for your enthusiasm, and praise, I really do appreciate them. But right now I'm focusing on my life.

You guys designs are great, I really like them. But, they'll just have to wait. My appologies.
