View Full Version : Ok..who wants some powder coating done??

Strydur

I am still learning but its going well so far. I am not going to add the service to the store until after the new year. If you want to get in on it early send me a E-mail. So for right now you can order the following colors, some of which I have not tested yet. The ones I have tested have pictures posted in this thread. Dont forget to specify which pieces you want done and what color. Your order may be delayed awhile before I can get to it so dont order powder coating if you are in a hurry to get your parts.

US Blue
Red
Copper Jacket (may oxidize without clear)
Bright White
Solar Flat Black
Sun Gold (may oxidize without clear)
Super High Gloss Clear
Super Wet Black

sounds good tim, but where are the pics at? would love to get an idea as to how good they are coming out.

I wont lie that looks amazing from the pics so far, but if possible all the colors should be shown. You have definitely got my attention on this though.

i apologize.. i didnt realize that you would be putting the colors in their own threads... but the red and white, definitely got my attention. i just finished painting a piece gloss white to the best i can get it, WITH clear coat too.. and it dont look half as good as your powdercoating. awesome!!

Tim,

Any data on how much thickness the powdercoating is adding to the diameter of the MHS parts? Is it going to impede the install of sinktube shrouds and such?

Strydur
12-07-2007, 02:23 PM
Powder coating adds enough that sink tubes would not fit. This could be made to work by machinging the part first and using a lighter coat maybe. The problem is if you dont put a thick coat then the part will have more of an orange peel look than smooth.

Maybe instead of sink tubing one could use thin pvc pipe for shrouds and decoration after the powder coating? that at least what i plan to do.

Maliki Skywalker
12-09-2007, 04:17 AM
So that means an MPP or Graflex clamp won't fit? :(

Unless of coarse i keep a 2 inch section un-powered coated? :?

xwingband
12-09-2007, 06:53 AM
A graflex clamp fits a 1.5" tube fine. Powder coating doesn't add enough to just plain old not have it fit.

Out of curiosity Tim, what kind of time frames are you going to be shooting for with the powder coating?

Strydur

Probably around a week depending on if I have your color in the gun ready to go or not etc..

Once I get the extra money, the copper and flat black peek my interest.

Kabraxxis
12-11-2007, 04:35 PM
I'm VERY interested in the black too. Is it possible to leave it uncleared for texture, possibly even "battle damage"? Or only paint parts of some pieces like the ribbed sections of the extensions?

Lord Maul
12-11-2007, 04:36 PM
Powdercoat isn't textured, once applied, it is smooth. The clearcoat is to protect the finish of the saber.

Kabraxxis
12-11-2007, 04:51 PM
Thanks for clearing that up Maul. Uncleared is a bad idea then?

Lord Maul
12-11-2007, 04:53 PM
My MHS is uncleared, because the jerks who did mine were going to charge a ton for it. It has held up fine, so it is your choice really. Clearcoating will make the powdercoat more durable, but I'm not sure how much Tim is charging.

O_o

Wow, the black is amazing.

So is there an extra charge for having custom powder jobs (powder only on certain areas of the piece)?

I think it'd be sweet to have the Luke-style blade holder with the black or maybe gold on the skinnier portion.

Tom
01-13-2008, 07:44 PM
That flat black is really piquing my interest. Will powercoat will stand up to drops, sweaty palms and the like without wearing off or nicking?

Strydur
01-14-2008, 10:14 AM
Powder coating is more scratch and abrasive resistant than paint. It is also very chemical resistant.

If you're in no hurry to test US Blue, I'll probably order some parts in about two weeks for powdercoating in Blue.

Sounds pretty good..I would love to see some of the grooved hilt pieces machined just a hair thinner, so that sink tube shrouds can be placed over them. Perhaps make that an option somehow?
I imagine a black grooved hilt section with the grooves picked out in silver would look unimaginably sweet under a sinktube shroud with well-placed cutouts.

DarthFender
01-29-2008, 10:20 PM
I think that would look absolutely GROOVEY!

Ok I admit it, that was bad. Go ahead and throw the stones. I am ready.

Strydur
01-30-2008, 10:41 AM
Just keep in mind it is a heck of allot easier to remove the PC from the surface than it is from inside grooves. Anything can be done of course but this would affect the price significantly. Except if you want new grooves machined like I do with the SHILT2,3,4 those can easily have the grooves be silver while the rest is PC.

As soon as a coworker gets back in town, I'll be sitting down with him and letting him pick out what he wants to be sure. I know he wants blue :)

He might like SHILT4 with silver grooves. I can just order through custom service work?

---

he just sent me an updated pic of what he wants, I'll probably order for him on Monday (after he pays me). It'll just be three pieces powdercoated in US Blue (DF3,doublemale,shilt4) with silver grooves in SHILT4.

This way, it'll give you an excuse to get some more practice in and to show a different color :)

Of all the parts colours mentioned in the first post the only one we have no pics for yet is "sun gold"...I'd like to see that one asap Please because I've got some ideas and cant visualize if theyd go better with gold or copper without seeing how 'bright' the gold is.

Also about the clear coat I see it is advised for the copper and gold but can it also be applied on top of the other colours as well i.e having clear coat over the "bright white"? And if applied over "solar flat black" would its "super high gloss" make it look like "super wet black"?

Chowser
03-09-2008, 07:43 AM
Well, Tim's probably busy, and it takes alot of time and effort to set it up.

I just bit the bullet and ordered some solar flat black and US blue parts just so he could have pictures.

I don't have plans for gold yet, so sorry guys. I still haven't put the US blue saber together yet.

Lord Sceleris
03-12-2008, 02:54 PM
Is there anything that can be done to make the red powder coat darker...more a "blood red" or deep crimson?

Strydur
03-13-2008, 02:25 PM
What has been listed is not the only colors we will offer eventually. There are other reds that we can get easily enough. The only reason powder coating is not listed on the site at the moment is a software error not allowing me to setup pricing stucture based off quantity. Here is what I plan to do for now.

This is based off one color.
1st piece $15
2 or more $10 each

So
if you wanted 4 pieces done red thats $40
if you wanted 1 piece red and 3 black then that would be $45

This is for the whole part one solid color.

If you want a shilt2,3,4 machined after PC so the grooves are no PC's it will be a $5 charge.

So until the next update on my shopping cart is done so I can add them to the store you can go ahead and just use the custom work fee and list out what you want done etc.. Please make sure you price it according to what I have listed or contact me first so I dont have to edit a bunch of incorrect orders.

Onli-Won Kanomi
03-16-2008, 08:02 AM
For purposes of powder coating does the slotted female T grip section with the 6 divider ribs that are between where the rubber grips go count as 7 pieces? That would add up to almost $150 [15+60+70 for antitarnish clear coat] for the 'paint job' alone plus the parts cost which I cant remember just to get a gold or copper Tgrip section...might be cheaper to get it real gold plated eh? ;-) lol

btw are those slotted female sections coming back anytime soon?

Chowser
03-17-2008, 05:38 AM

So, what would be the cost to to this? (part circled in red)

is PC only for new orders or can we send in a piece to be done??

Strydur
04-03-2008, 06:51 PM
You can send in pieces. You can also ask about getting non saber stuff done. I have added the service to the site. I decided to do them at $12.50 per piece per color to start and see how that goes. I was hoping to do it a little less but it does take a bit of time to prep and PC the parts. I added bubble gum to the list of colors and I have around 8 or so other colors that will be added soon. I will of course post pics etc.

I will also be offering the service of having your parts sand blasted which gives them a cool metallic silver finish.

04-04-2008, 12:56 AM
Just curious but if one designed a saber with a sink tube overlay could that overlay be powdercoated? Would the powdercoating 'take' on something chromed like that or would the chrome have to be stripped off first?? Maybe with the sandblasting???

Strydur
04-04-2008, 01:13 PM
It might be better to rough it up but PC would stick fine. Some of the colors actually are made to go over chromed or polished parts.

Darth Anubis
04-06-2008, 05:10 PM

Strydur
04-07-2008, 12:28 AM
$1,000,000 :)

Is that black and red? I am not doing any two-tone jobs like that yet. It would involve spraying everything black and then masking off everything except for the grooves and then spraying the red. That would be very time consuming. Not taking that into account you would be looking at 8 spray jobs so 8*$12.50=$100

Kant Lavar
04-07-2008, 02:10 AM

Strydur
04-08-2008, 12:38 PM
Darth,

5" section in black? $12.50
shilt 2 in black with bare grooves $12.50 + $5 custom work fee
sledholder3 in black with bare grooves $12.50 + $5 custom work fee

I would rather not do the sledholder 3 that way and would rather reverse the colors but it could be done I think. I might just have to buy a new tool for it so it may take longer.

Lama,

$12.50 x3 (i will count the claw setup as one piece as long as you dont mind the bolts and eveything black)

$10 custom work fee.

Powder coating adds enough that sink tubes would not fit. This could be made to work by machinging the part first and using a lighter coat maybe. The problem is if you dont put a thick coat then the part will have more of an orange peel look than smooth.

I hate resurrecting an old topic, but did anyone ever figure out how much has to be machined off to make a powder coated part fit inside a 22 ga. chrome sinktube?

That sounds about right...I just remembered Tim had machined some parts to be PC'd and fit inside a 20ga. brass pipe for me, and I had him do those pieces at 1.42 and it was actually a bit loose.

So I'd have super wet black flutes?

I'll get back to you tomorrow, gotta draw it up that way and let the little one decide if he likes it mostly silver with black flutes.

I wouldnt do super wet black..it shows fine scratches too easily.

Yeah, my original shilt4 in Super Wet Black is showing some scratches. (kids...)

Can you do it in solar flat black then?

I'll order once I see what your new blade holder is since I was waiting on #12, I'll look at your new one first. :)
