View Full Version : Any artists?

Curious... Any artists here? I'm not one but I like to dabble and my major requires that you have at least some drawing skills even though they don't state it outright...

Here's a character from the SW Roleplaying board I'm on. See sig for site.[:D] I started and left it almost like a "colorized" B&W. I debated going for color or not and since a had scanned it I said "What the hell, go for it!"

That looks really good. She kinda looks like Mara Jade in a way, but with a whole lot more innocence. I draw but I'm the same way, I wouldn't call myself an artist in the drawing sense. I'm more of a craftsman with cars, boats, carpentry, and of course, now lightsabers.[:D] I'll get some stuff scanned and post them soon.

p.s. I like the colorized b&w more, it's kinda like Sin City or Hellboy. BTW, great job on the saber shirts and good luck.

Yeah, it did kind of remind me of the one comic with Mara Jade. There was a frame that was very similar to that. I'm really good friends with the girl that roleplays this character. She sent me her views of what the character looks like. I added my spin. I took her current avatar, the drawing she sent me and her model (Rachel Weisz) to make that.

I might send this to her if I decide it's finished for a V-day present. I'm already sending her something for V-day so wish me luck on that.[;)]

I'm an artist even though it's been a while since I've drawn anything, seriously, and I can't find my portfolio. ...Anyway! I can promise you she will be elated to receive that drawing. It looks very good.

Yup, I'm an artist. My career, actually. I've been the lead graphic artist for 4 years at the company I currently work at, and I do commission/comic work on the side.

If you're even slightly interested, visit my webpage (the link's in my profile).

I may throw you some work if I don't feel up to something. I did have a request in at SWAG when it went under so perhaps someday.[:)]

Add another artist to the list[:)]! I have (like most of you) drawn all my life. Although I was never happy with any of them, I seemed to always see the flaws. That was until I wanted a tattoo apprenticship and had to have a portfolio. I was awarded an apprenticship that fell through after the artist moved. I then decided I would learn on my own. Everyone called me a scratcher- term used to identify a tattoo artist with no apprenticship. But as I was told by another tattoo artist- You are only a scratcher till your good, then nobody ever says it again. Anyway, I have been tattooing now for close to 5 years. I even did it as a buisiness for awhile. But armoring made me more money. I have even had people fly from other parts of the country for my work. One woman in particular fly from Maine to Az. to be worked on. Also, if you go to any strip club in Pheonix, Az. you are bound to see my work. They were a lot of my clients, I had a friend in the buisiness. Needless to say, I never heard the word scratcher again[:D].

I'm an artist, been drawing ever since I could hold a pencil or pen. =]

Only bummer is I've lost my inspiration for a little bit, just no will to draw, which is really going to hurt my skill. Although, I've been through some rough stuff in my life last couple months, so I'm sure I'll eventually pull through it and get back into it. Especially because I want to get some good art done since I would love to move onto an art college once I get my Associates degree.

I prefer the B & W one as well xwingband. It's a nice drawing.

I don't consider myself that much of an artist because I rarely draw as a creative outlet (Music is that outlet for me). I just always had that talent of I see it and I can draw it. That magic eye to hand ability to recreate anything. The B/W version took me about 15 minutes to pound out even with some mini-sketches to make sure I had the idea in my head. That's not even a measure of how well I can draw life.

It seems the consensus is the B/W is liked. I subtly asked her if she liked the drawing, and she did, so it's going to be sent to her. I can't go backwards and remove the color, but through the forsight to scan it I can do the next best thing. By the virtue of Photoshop and a kicka$$ printer I had forgotten I could just take the old version and print it onto another mylar sheet with about zero extra effort. So she'll get two.[:D]

Thanks guys. Start posting some drawings too![:p]

In short you need to have an online hoster. You upload your images to them and the url they give you goes in between the img tags.

I"m going to try this again Dragon 1 (http://www.photoape.com/album/photo/index.cfm?albumID=1283&photoPage=1)
Dragon 2 (http://www.photoape.com/album/photo/index.cfm?albumID=1283&photoPage=2) I do belive that the links are working now. The two dragons hear are not the best ones that I have done, how ever they are the first two that I did on clayboard. Clayboard is a white board that has black ink sprayed across that board and the one etches in to the board and removes the ink to revile the white. I have two more done that I will post later.

Those are nifty looking dragons, nich! Well done.

Here's one of my latest works. The client was pleased, and thank goodness he was, because that background was a monster. The whole piece took me about 25-30 hours spread out over the course of 2-3 weeks.

Grima what did you use as far as mediums go. Thats a realy nice pice. I like the compostion and the expression on the girls face. I also like how the background is a littly blurry just for the fact that the girl stays in focas and every thing leads to her.

@nich:

I sketched it out on paper first, scanned it, and then inked and painted it in Photoshop with a Wacom Intuos 2 tablet. My poor computer could hardly handle it, since it was at 300 dpi and the file, with all its layers, was about 150mb in size.

I need more memory, that's all I can say.

xwingband
02-04-2006, 02:05 PM
heh, even with 1GB of memory I have photoshop on occasion lag rather nicely. Especially when moving layers. I use photoshop mostly for composition type things like on your site. Architecture professors are fond of making us do them with our models adding in "scale figures." I wish I had a tablet but those cost a lot. I love working with airbrushes and a tablet would have been a great substitute for not having an airbrush with me.

Here's the last good drawing I did, a gift for my mother.

If you all are interested, this is an ink+ink wash drawing. The picture sucks cause I couldn't use a scanner so I just too a picture of it with a digi cam. (in hindisght I should have taken it out of the frame.[:D])

Once I get my inspiration I plan to do an entire series of angels. Maybe even make some money from it, who knows.

@TheAlienDragon

You know if you like the inks you might want to try the clayboard white. You would be able to apply the ink and ink walshes and then you could go back and remove the ink by skrathing or using still whool or fiber glass. I have used ink a lot but I'm just getting in to the skratch board and its been wonderful. Still learning how to do the blak on white with the white showing through.

I might look into that. Sounds interesting and could give me some more options whilst drawing.

my mother is a nationaly acclaimed watercolor artist. she has won several awards for her art and has up to a 3 year waiting list for any commission she has.

her most recent painting of an Austin Healey sold for 850$. she has sold paintings for more then that and has has her art featured in everything from 4 star hotel ads, to wine labels.

Ok so what part of I, Jedi is your picture from.
I guess it would help if I read the book. Oh well I'll keep going with the New Jedi Order.

xwingband
02-08-2006, 08:22 PM
Yeah, reading the book would help.[:p] It's from a scene where Corran gets ambushed by the gang he's trying to bring down. They rig up the warehouse with tons of explosives. Corran thinks "No problem..." and uses his special ability to absorb energy. He can't store the energy and has to expend it somehow. Normally he uses it to use the telekinetic powers he cant access normally, but instead he projects a mental image of an ominous Jedi over the flaming warehouse to the entire city.

I really liked the idea even though it really only was a paragraph of description. It was the turning point of the story to me.

X-wing,
good luck with the v-day gifts. May the Force be with you. I think you should give that to her b/c it is a really nice drawing. Like I said, it looked like Mara Jade without you even telling me it was Mara Jade.[:D]

Tim,
Totally take these guys talents to the max! I'd love a TCSS poster to put behind my saber holders and have the lightsabers light it up. Look at what they've already done just for the T-shirts!

BTW congrats X-Wing on the T-shirt design. I always liked that one the most.[;)]

xwingband

She already got the drawings. I'm smart, it's the first in a series up until v-day.[;)] She's worth it. I found my SW chick and I trying my hardest to make her mine.[:D]

I like the poster idea. I think that'd be a more intense contest though and avoiding copyright problems would be more difficult as it's being sold on a larger scale.

On the art related theme, I will be doing something neat when I have time next week. I'm going to creat a 3D mandolorian skull out of music wire (It's like thin steel rod) and covering it with mesh in some areas. It's going to be so neat.

X-Wing, I totally agree with you on finding a SW chick! Good luck with that, and again may the force be with you.

I'm big on building/customizing/hotrodding cars especially the muscle car era so when my girl told me she thought a 1969 Camaro Z/28 and a 1970 Plymouth Road Runner 440 6-pack I immediately asked her to marry me! Believe it or not, she said yes!

Good luck, sounds like a good plan

Well I thought I'd dig this up.

The day before my father's viewing I was quite dispondent about the whole situation. I needed to do something because I felt impotent as there was nothing I could do then to help time move any faster or the pain go away. I grabbed my drawing supplies and pounded this out in 30 minutes. When I was done I felt better and was able to sleep. It's since helped to look at and I have the original mounted on my wall.

It's a 20"x25" charcoal and pencil on smooth watercolor paper. In case you don't realize it that's my father in his dress uniform.

Anyone have stuff to show? I was pleasantly suprised at the previous showings.

I'm an amateur artist. Been drawing for as long as I can remember. I do mostly sketches as concept art for game mods and whatnot. Hoping to turn that into a career with a degree in game art from either UAT or Full Sail.

Are these from the Last Exile? That looks like a VanShip! I so <3 that series!

I'm an artist, but pencil and paper is definitely NOT my medium. I'm more craftsy, mostly chainmaille jewelery, but some armor.
I've researched actual swordsmithing, but never invested any mulah or materials.

I am a huge fan of Last Exile...best anime ever in my opinion and more desireable than even Star Wars (*braces for barrage of blaster fire*). It was indeed inspired by the vanship, but it is vastly different in how it works.

The engine in front is what I like to call an anti-matter percussion engine, which is essentially an internal combustion engine that reacts tiny bits of charged matter and anti-matter within a magnetic bubble, which creates kinetic energy to turn the engine and a drive shaft connected to it, which then spins up a generator. Electricity is used to power the weapons and the plasmagnetodynamic thrusters. [/geek]

I dont know about UAT but I have several friends who have gotten "degrees" from full sail, and there not worth the paper theyer written on in any of my friends respective fields What area did they get degrees in? And what do you mean by not worth it (were their degrees not accepted by anyone, was it just overpriced (I already know it is), or was it something else)? I know the gaming industry cares nothing for degrees, since it's all about experience and material proof of how well you can do your job...I need to get a degree mostly so I can learn how to model and skin 3D since I don't have money to purchase my own copy of 3dsMax, Maya, Photoshop, etc. to start practising now. It's more like a bubble of time in which to do that than getting a degree...don't know how else to put it.

Sethski, those are awesome. I love that last one in the first line especially.

I've never been much of a sketch artist, but I work a lot with CG and photography, and dabble in music and ceramics.
I'm an avid fan of literature, both nonfiction and artistic.
My carpentry and metalwork is almost completely for practical means (tools, parts, furniture).
Though with my recent interest in costuming in general they've been used more and more for prop-making, both personal, and theatre.
A decent sampling of my visual arts and writing is available on my dA page: http://www.kurai-shinzou.deviantart.com.
I'll have a lot more to post there when I get some time to dig through the archives and/or get a new camera.

Well, Arcangel (I'm assuming Arcangel is Crystal and has changed her handle), now you've gone and made everyone else here feel like third-grade doodlers. :p Now we just need slothfurnace to add something and the thread can be locked.

I work in the field of manga, but I don't draw manga. Back in the day, though, I used to be a pretty handy doodler, and still have a bit of a knack for drawing from life. (I'm always pestering my students--who draw a thousand times better than I do--about their perspective and draftsmanship.)

Anyway, here's a sketch I did of my son...like, eight years ago.

Sorry about the size. This was literally my FIRST forum post ever. Still learning here..

Sorry, Archangel, and welcome to the forums. Our "Crystal Chambers" has said she wished she had used the handle "Arc Angel" (Yeah, she's into puns ;)), and that is in fact her handle on fx-sabers.com. Add to that the fact that she went to art school, and there you have the reason for my mistake. Are you currently in art scool? That third drawing, in particular, has the look of a class assignment. :p (Oh, and just to give you a taste of what my students have to endure, the foreshortening on that one seems off. :-D)

Despite (or because of) living in Japan, I don't go in for the whole "mystical Orient" thing, but that first drawing of a yūjo (no, she's definitely not a geisha) is really nice. Were you working from a photo?

slothfurnace, great work (obviously). And none of them look like assignments from art school. Is the portrait of a current or former Significant Other? The part in the hair is convincingly natural. For me, it's that sort of attention to detail that makes a drawing come to life.

At the moment, she is on Fiji, of all places, studying English, but, yes, she's Japanese. Naturally, her dream is to go to Hollywood. Her name's Yukiyo Kitado, and she won Second Place in the 2009 IMATS competition in London. You can see her entry starting at the 3:38 mark in this YouTube video:

Looks real familiar...but living in Japan for 15 years, I'm pretty out of touch with American pop culture these days. I didn't even know what a "Lebron" was till a couple days ago. :p

But the Stanton piece was for "Big Love," right? (The "ROMAN" tag, as well as the hat, is a giveaway.) So you've worked on "True Blood" and "Big Love." And this Emmy nomination is your first nomination for a big award. I may be out of touch with American pop culture, but my Google skills are pretty good. I think I have figured out who you are. But first, a blunt question: Are you a woman?

Lord Sith

Very cool. I really wish I had gone into your line of work. When I was a kid, I was a big fan of Lon Cheney, Sr., borrowed every book on stage make-up in the library, and in the sixth grade I made myself up as Quasimodo for Halloween, complete with prosthetics. "Special effects make-up artist" was high on the long list of things I wanted to be. ;) Halloween remains my favorite holiday. (I made my son up as the X-Men's Nightcrawler when he was in the fifth grade--again, complete with prosthetics. :p)

Lord Sith, I would love to see you apply your skills and talent to making an "organic" hilt. There are few organic hilts out there because they require skill with materials we have little to no experience with. Even a Darth Sidious hilt is to much of a challenge for even the most experienced sabersmiths, because it's not a shape you can turn out on a lathe.

ZING!

Yes 3D scanners are very cool indeed. You can do mock ups by sculpts or fabs then scan them into the computer and then import to your favorite software maya, 3D Studio,XSI.Lightwave whatever you like. I use Maya and ZBrush because i need the mechanics of Maya and the organics of ZBrush. Once your happy with what you got in the computer then you export out into the cncs native file format usually IGES. or STL. Right now alot of the cncs are switching over their software to handle other file formats like Ztools. MA. 3DS. etc..which is awsome.
Wow. The possibilities are limitless. :o I'm working on 3D design with Blue Fox (another TCSS member who is a professional 3D designer) and we plan to send it off to Shapeways (http://www.shapeways.com/) for 3D printing in what they call "Stainless Steel (http://www.shapeways.com/materials/stainless_steel)," but 3D scanning and multi-axis CNC adds so much more potential.

I have seen alot of cool things in my career, but the sabers that people make here are some of the most beautiful pieces of art i've seen. Using table lathes and hand filing, cutting, sanding and polishing absolutely amasing to say the least.

Man, there is all kinds of cool art in here. Some seriously good stuff. Sadly, I'm not much of an artist. I can draw stuff but unless it's a saber or other bladed weapon, I pretty much have to look at what I'm drawing, a lot, to be able to draw it. However when I do that, it comes out looking a lot like the original (if it's a drawing that is). On the upside, if I practiced for awhile, I could forge other people's sketches. ;) I kid, I kid.

So here is a quick sketch of a sith mask I am thinking of making. I will probably tool around with it abit until I like where its going and then I will put it into a sculpture and mold it for epoxy casting.

Beautiful. For what it's worth, I like the one on the left. Horns automatically make a creature look "demonic," but the hornless version is more...How to put it? "Inscrutable and disturbing."

I thought I'd share some of my art with you guys. Here are a couple of Maiden covers I copied. They're done in acrylic. The Autobot & Decepticon symbols are done on some scrap pieces of plywood. I routered the edges, flexstoned the edges, spraypainted & wiped off the background to get a stained effect since I couldn't find orange & purple stain. I painted the symbols with oil paint. The evil skull is done in oil.

5 more paintings I want share. Brutus is the mascot for Ohio State, I painted him & the John Deer tractor for a friend of mine. He wanted them done in loose brush strokes. I painted the witches tree for Mom last Halloween. I painted the turtle for my 4 year old daughter. It's he favorite Littlest petshop figure. All of those were done in acrylic. The Hooters Smurfette I drew when I was a manager at Hooters. We ran out of kids menus, so I drew this up & made a bunch of copies for the store. I scanned the sketch and painted it in photo shop. That is my second digital painting.

Hey everyone, I just wanted to show the latest tattoo I just finished for someone. It's a cover up. He had some black tribal sun thing on his arm, now its a fiending skull ripping through his skin. It's my design, he loves it. I should have pics of the latest saber I'm working on for my sisters friend by next week. My camera is the worst for taking pictures of the tattoos I've done. It's great for taking pictures of sabers, just not tattoos. Strange, huh.

Hello,

I used to be a regular of these forums a long time ago then life changed my priorities and I basically disappeared. (I can't remember my old username)

With the impending launch of SW:TOR my interest in star wars and lightsabers was brought back to life and I decided to do a few 3D renderings. I'm just learning so I'm not that great yet with them and I wouldn't consider myself an artist.

This my Dark Jedi Master Dakk O'Neil which will be my character in TOR:

My wife and I were talking about costumes last, so I pulled out a couple of pairs of my old boots, motorcycle racing pants, duster & hat last night. My wife got a few images and I had at them in Photoshop today (used Crosshatch on the BG and Rough Pastels on me);
