The epic thread a few lines down titled the brotherhood of the sith darth vader costume would provide you with some good reading material... And if you are looking at a good movie accurate costume you can figure to multiply your original estimate by 5-10 or maybe more...We have quite a few guys here that have some excellent vader costumes... Lots of skill, time and money invested and it shows.

You can read in depth there, Lan-Ed-Tul, Tetmatek, Seth22, and me, on building a better Vader.

You cannot get a "Nice" Vader costume for $300.00 or under, the best you can do with that much cash is the Rubies Deluxe Darth Vader costume, and that is a piece of crap,

The Rubies Supreme Darth Vader Costume ain't bad, but it's still cheap crap. Here's mine, when I first got it -Out of the box

That's what I started with, and this is what I have now -

That's after a couple thousand dollars in upgrades, and THAT, is what I call nice, but that's all in each person's point of view, what ever your aiming for, there's some options.
My Honest opinion, If your not looking to be 501st, then the Rubies Supreme is a great costume.
