OKKAAYYYY.....I bet everyone has a story about how badly they injured themselves while building their sabers. I bet there are some whippers - so do share so we can get some of that cringing action.

I'm only knew to saber building so I've only got the usual cuts on my hands and the hot glue and soldering iron burns.

I bet Stydur, Ultra, Corbin and Gelu have some beauties.......

nothing to do with lightsabers, but a true story about swords:
my friend had a roommate in college who was fencing with another friend. he lunged at his friend, struck, and the foil broke in two. The part still attached to the hilt went through the guy's chest and killed him. my friend said his roommate never quite got over it.

"Look at me! Judge me by my size do you? And well you do not! For my ally is the force, and a powerful ally it is!"

How about how many times we zapped ourselves first putting the EL sabers together?! or about exploding dremil disks! Yeah![8D]

Let's see.....many of those, buat I've also Dremelled my thumb, with a 'metal grinder' type of bit. No sever damage, just roughed up my thumb pretty deep - no blood though.

I've also some REAL close to severe injury with broken drill bits while trying to drill a stainless steel shaft collar.

when building my el saber, i used a chrome vacuum extension thing for the main body. when i was pushing the blade holder into the hilt, it got stuck, so i started pressing harder and the holder went down in and my thumb hit on the top of the vacuum tube and cut a big chunk out of the end of it.

Arg! I cringed just by reading that, suit!

I'm only on my second saber, so the most that's happened to me is when I used my pop riveter. I wasn't aware that it "kicks back" when you use it, and aside from skidding all over my poor sink tube (scratches galore), it skidded across my thumb as well. Ouch, indeed.

I was trying to tech my wife to use the chop saw to cut Polyc. I showed her how to do it all but forgot to mention one thing. When she started the saw, the blade was allready touching the tube and it shot a 4 foot tube all the way across the shop. The tube had chunks missing all the way down it and needless to say my wife couldnt stop shaking for about 20 minutes.

Whoa, I'm glad I'm not around you guys... Never managed to hurt myself saber building either but I have cut myself badly and I believe I broke a bone in my hand last month and never noticed. I was using a power auger to build our fence and it hit something hard. I lost hold of it and it came around and smacked my hand before I got hold of it again. Had a nasty bruise and it hurt for a few days but I noticed last week that a bone in my hand was crooked...[:p]

I have stabbed the crap out of my pinky on my emitter point once. However most injuries I tend not to notice, as I have no feeling in my hands. Used to be a mechanic and have always worked with my hands. That and I have had my left hand (all the bones over the palm) shattered and me wrist severely shattered fighting in the SCA (extra bones stick out of the top of my hand). So needless to say the typical hot glue, soldering iron, and dremel mishaps I never feel or even notice until a few days later, or with profuse blood loss[:)].

I sliced my thumb open with a stanley knife once - ran it over my thumb coz I thought it was blunt, a few minutes later my thumb opened up and blood spewed out.

I know how you feel about after working on cars. I was using the dremel and it skipped and I didn't even notice it ran right across my hand until my roomate was complaining about blood all over the dorm floor.[B)][xx(]

Dremels are a never ending source of horror stories it seems. The first one I had was a cheapy no name one that bogged down at the slightest touch. Even touching it to another material caused it to bog down to the point of stopping. So when I bought my name brand DREMEL my first thought was- I wonder how easy this one bogs down? Like an idiot, I turned it on with no bit in the housing and grasped it very firmly in a foolish attempt to bog it down. Needless to say-it didnt work. All it did was burn the crap out of my index finger(to the point of melting skin) and didnt bog in the slightest. My finger is still healing from this and I still find a random piece of melted skin attached to my dremel every now and then. But like always, I didnt know it had happened til it was to late and didnt feel a thing. Also of note, when my hand shattered and later when my wrist shattered, between adrenaline and my natural pain tolorance and lack of feeling, I continued to fight until the war was over (several hours).

r we telling how we injure ourselves when working with tools?

if so, i have a short story.
was working on a model. a car model to be exact. young. alone. and kinda stupid. picked up a xaco knief, and wanted to cut off the access platic from a piece. was cutting towards myself. slipped and the xaco knief went into my pointer finger. couldn't stop bleeding. went to the Hospital. gotten 7 stitches. lucky blade didn't get my bone. I still have the scare to prove it.

Since I have yet to build a saber I will share some of my automotive storys...

I have cut every single finger with a razor blade, some moultiple times. And usualy 5 min. bleeders. (Yes I rate them by how long they bleed.)

Once I was cutting something and slipped and jabbed a razor into the plam of my hand. That was a little scary, because at first I thought I cut a tendon

I have wacked myself in the area with an air hose. That brought me to my knees.

A co-worker smacked my kneecap with a wrench. (almost as bad as the area

I have skinned all of my knuckles at one time or another.
Tip: if you skin yourself, pull the skin off before you feel it, it will be numb for about 10sec. It will be easyer to keep clean later.

I once ripped my right hand open on rusty barbed wire and never felt it. 1 1/2" gash. Could see tendons moving. I was about 5 or 6 at the time.

The last good injury I had was when I picked up a large sheet of plywood, with granet cemented to one side and rusty nails sticking out the other, up into a dumpster and it slipped. A rusty nail broke off in the palm of my right hand. I pulled it out and spent 4hrs. in the ER to get a tetnes (sp?) shot. It had healed by then.

I have more if you want them... lol

So far other than my back surgery my worst gritz has been when I was using a pipe bender to shape some conduit for a camera run and I crushed my 4th and 5th toes on my left foot because I was too busy shooting the bull with a co-worker instead of paying attention. That was my first year out in the field out of school and I have tried to not do anything like that again which is real hard since I am a clutz by nature.

I just tend to burn myself with a 800 degree soldering from time to time, it doesn't really hurt because it is so hot it deadens the nerves and it doesn't blister because it just turns the skin white and you get the wonderful smell of burnt skin.

When I was in Voc. School, (that explains alot doesn't it) I took a week of cabinet making...

Long story short, you have to get a 100 on the safty test to use the band saw.

I was the only one to take it 3 times.

I was also the only one that ended up injuring myself with it.

I got it right between the nail and the skin on my right thumb, kind of like using a chainsaw to peal an apple...

I looked up for just a second and that's all it took!

Well I took that as an omen not to take that shop.

Practicing with my katana one day, I tried this move I've only tried -once- with a real blade: You draw, make a R-L diagonal cut, a L-R horizontal cut, a straight half-way cut, followed by a direct back stab... Guess what happened? The point of the katana got caught in my pants and went through more than half an inch into my upper thigh.

It was pretty hilarious coz the first thing I said was "Oh ****! My Pants!" and as I put my right hand into my pocket and saw blood as i pulled it out: "Huh... I'm bleeding" as I drop the sword.

I did this in campus too, so when the police came, you have no idea how hard it was to tell them again and again that I stabbed -myself- with -my- sword while they were trying to keep a straight face.

Well, whoever said (firebird) a project isn't done well without some blood shed better be right.

I was drilling out the tip to my E-11. The part was too small... I held it in my hand. Yes, you can see where this is going.[xx(] I was stupid...

Instead of drilling through it broke through the back before that and hit my hand. It didn't go through... Sorry guys no donut hole in my hand but it broke the skin for sure and ripped up some flesh for sure. So I have a 3/8" nasty I don't know how to describe it in my palm.

It so happened I was alone at home. My mother freaked at the phone call. I made a absolute mess trying to get band-aids and stuff to clean the wound with one hand.

After and emergency room visit they sent me home with enough dressings and creams to keep it clean for a week. I got a tetnous shot, antibiotics and even a vicodin prescription (I am not getting the Vicodin... I never hae used more than 80mg of any pain reliver in my life, I'm not starting with a drug I could sell on the streets). Stitches would have pointless as the skin and flesh was ripped...[xx(]

Moral is... my blaster should look all kinds of awesome because I sure shed some blood on this one.

Just kidding. Dropping a sword is never good though. I jump on my students for dropping a shinai and it isn't even metal. It's just that I want them to respect a sword.

The closest I ever came to getting hurt was when I was using a dremel to grind down a lip off a hilt section. I was holding it to close to my stomach, and sure enough it jumped. Before I could turn it off it ripped 3 holes in my tshirt. It was one of my favorite tshirts too. Fortunately it didn't get me.

It sort of looked like a ying-yang symbol... I'll take a pic in the morning. I have to change the bandages each day, so I might as well. It's not horrible mind you, when it first happened boy was I bleeding. My hand was dripping.
