PLI Question

I have a few LEDs hanging around my house so I wanted to do something with them. If I were to set them up like this

Battery+++++++ +++++ ++++++++
Battery Red LED Yellow LED Green LED
Battery------------- --------- -------------

Would that work like a PLI and cut power to the furthest LED?

I believe to do it without a controller like the PLI sold here you'd need to figure out how to make it so the last LED just barely lights under the best battery level. That way as it drains the led dims then the next...

That idea works in principle, the whole series LEDs as a bargraph, but I think the PLI here saves a lot of work.
