View Full Version : A simple way to hot swap the LED

I was thinking (a dangerous past time, I know) that with the modular sabers it would be easy to swap out the Luxeon LED by using quick disconnect wire connectors:

Many of you have probably used these before.

Anyway, the LED sits in the floating LED disc/heatsink, right? So, you can just buy the seperate LED holder discs from Strydur and attach a Luxeon to it, solder wires to the Luxeon as usual, but then attach the quick disconnects to the wires. You can do this with as many discs as you want.

Inside your hilt you will have your electronics attached to the mating ends of the quick disconnects. I hope you're following so far.

Then to change the Luxeon, just unscrew the emitter, pull out the LED disc, unplug it, and plug in a new one. Then you could have every color of Luxeon for one saber at minimal cost.

And if you ask nice enough, I'm sure Strydur will allow us to buy just the LED holder disc/heatsink and quick disconnects for this purpose, right bud?

So you do this while it's on (hence the danger)? Otherwise... why not? Sounds good to me. I'd love to see someone carrying a shoebox of extra LEDs.[:D]

I've been planning this for quite some time, already. Ultra, it looks like you are planning on using 2 seperate plugs per side. Is this true?

I am planning on getting some low-profile plugs used in the RC (radio-control) hobby.[;)] Two wires per end/plug, this way there is only 1 "plug" to undo.

But now, will Tim sell just the LED heatsinks, seperately?

I've also been doing this to all my sabers because i am prone to changing my mind with color and somtimes put together for test fit and then take back apart. you want to have everything in there that's going to be there so on final assembly ther are no suprises. especially with custom hilts. Here lately i've been modifying MR sound boards with board plugs for power and the on off switch. Also when i use there battery/speaker combos I have been removing the spring ping connectors changing them to plugs. I'have had several problems with the spring pins losing connection intermitntly when duelling. they always come back on but it is annoying. I will post some pics of these board mods in a new thread soon for all the filks at home.
