I thought I'd give this saber it's own thread.
It will be a very accurate Qui-Gon Jinn replica, with a green K2, Erv's CF 2.5, and rechargeable battery. Here are some shots from the process.

Masking taped a polished aluminum pipe and measured out the dimensions. the cut with a dremmel and mitre saw.

http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb98/rpetkau/Qui%20gon/IMG_1312.jpg
Used a secure jig and a router to carve out the flat part of the grip. The grip section is acetal plastic (delrin).

Again with the jig and router to make the grooves.

Machine the pomel - preped for a speaker, and the cover plate for where Erv's Buttered toast will go.

Most of the parts machined

Painting started.

I'm just waiting for a package from France, and my rechargeable batteries to arrive.

Mad, mad stuff, Madcow!!!

Looking forward to seeing that completed. I have to admit--I have never liked any of the replica saber designs (mainly because they don't lend themselves to staged combat much), but I love the beauty of the Qui-Gonn/Liam Neeson saber hilt.

I think it's very very fitting to use Erv's board in there too! Good luck!

Finished!!!

I did the final assembly today!
http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb98/rpetkau/Qui%20gon/IMG_1580.jpg

It took forever to assemble because everything is so crammed... but it works.
Ill post glam shots later, and explain the hidden effects button.
http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb98/rpetkau/Qui%20gon/IMG_1578.jpg
Thats Erv's Buttered Toast crammed in between the recharge port and the secret effects button.

- 4.8 volt rechargeable NIMH batteries with 2600 mAh.
- Green K2
- Erv's CF version 2.5

Great work, Madcow, that is one in a million!!! :)

I have a few folks who've been dying to see this saber, so I'm glad to pass on the photos links and so forth.

Also--where do you get those super-mini buttons? I know Erv has them, but you mind PM-ing me about those? They would probably lend themselves excellently to staged combat, and I could REALLY use help on that end... switches are hard to protect and hide from jutting out with most sabers I have...

As I mentioned before... the ones Erv uses and madcow is using on the back are "tactile" switches.

They are momentary only and are called "tactile" because they make a nice "clicky" noise. :)

Madcow

Thanks guys,
The mini tactile switch is the aux button - hidden under the plate. You activate it by pressing ino the black groove underneath the saber.

The main switch is a latching pushbutton thing I found locally. Here is a look at it sunk into a 5/8" hole.

Madcow is a single person and he wanted it to be unique. So no "runs".

If you want a qui-gon you are going to have to cope like the rest of us... i.e. buy a Parks, make one, or pay huge amounts if you can find anyone willing to make a one-off.

Didn't read where he had a cf 2.5 in it. At least I don't think I did. Make's the saber all the better if you have a good board in it. That's cool still.

Madcow,

Where'd you get the knurled knob you used for the power button? I need some like that for a couple new sabers I am working on.

I am still insanely jealous of you. Your saber is my new desktop wallpaper.

Novastar
08-21-2007, 03:10 PM
That's a good question!

Also, Madcow... I'm curious as to how long the saber is and the generally "tightest" choke point on it. I know it's screen accurate, but I don't really know what that means in terms of size.

Gorgeous though, gorgeous! And glad you (along with many others) are enjoying my sound configurations. I'm looking at making a few more in the future, but not really sure where else to go after that with the exception of pitch tweaks and all that... :)

HEMI saber. Sounds like it has a HEMI. I want one that sounds like a weed whacker on steroids.

I wouldn't mind knowing where to get a cap like that. If I cant change my existing one to fit a switch a new one would be awesome.

Madcow,

Thanks for the compliments guys.
The button I ended up using is an anodized computer case thumbscrew that I cut the top off and drilled a hole in the underside.
Kinda like these:
http://www.krallkomputers.com/images/RedTS.jpg

The rubber bushing is half of a 5/8" grommet, hollowed out inside by my dremmel.
http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb98/rpetkau/Qui%20gon/button2.jpg

As for dimensions Nova... I made it to these specifications (which I found at sitharchives.com)
http://www.sitharchives.com/prequels/images/qui_large.png
... Accept where I disagreed based on pics of the actual prop (padawans guide), but those were only very minor details.\

Cool, thanks! I didn't even know spec sheets like that existed, or were easily "findable" by folks.

Excellent work!

So, overall it is about 1.5" diameter, and in some cases like 1.3 or 1.4"... very sleek!

i can vouch for how small the hilt he built is, fits perfectly in the hand very sleek and we built!
