so whatexactly does that imperial glaze do? if you dont mind me asking wolverine.

is it basically a polishing/buffing compound? i have some rubbing compound i got but it really takes a long time to get the finish smooth with it, IE... the shins, chestbox, shoulder armor, all of which has been painted.

I really like the outer robe, I got it from a seller on ebay for I think 70.00. The leather belt also came from ebay and the guy makes the wide part in different leather dye colors. I still have to get boots but this costume is workable until I can get Vader finished. There are some up coming conventions that I want to hit to see if I can scare up some saber sales. :)

LAN, -Yes it is it basically a polishing/buffing compound? I put this on the lid, and buffed it out, and let me tell ya, the shine looks 6 feet deep on this sucker! :D
I bought it on suggestion from the guy who told everyone on STT site about the paints. You can get it at PepBoys for around $12.00 for a 16oz bottle.

I'm buffing out the armor, so I'll throw up some pictures in awhile.

Do-Clo, I really like the outfit man, nice job!
Looks like the cloak I got from an ebay vendor called -smoral_media for right around the same price.

I noticed your new avatar

I wonder if Seth, and Tet have goatee's, you, me, and LAN does, I think :?
We can be the Brotherhood of the....nevermind    :?

I got the robe from enchantwear, the guy you got yours from is about an 1 hour drive from me but he seems a little flaky in his emails so I went with this one. I really love the double saber, but it is one big mother, I am ordering some pommels so I can use it as two sabers also. Thanks for the kind words my Brothers.

These are all room lighting, with some can lights on the right side. It's dark out, so no sun to aid the pictures.

man, now i really want a porty armor to go with the lid.

i wonder when he might do another rots armor again?

i still gotta run by and grab some 9 volt batts for the suit.

i will need 5 for everything, i want to run with fresh batts.

i also need to grab a 4 pack of aa batts, to round off what i need on them.

i will stop by wally world on way home and grab the batts, and the straps i need.

those are some real shiny pics of the lid and armor wolverine, it looks sharp as heck to me dude.

and no, not a goatee, a beard and mustache. im glad ya dropped the new brotherhood thing

i knew you were kiddin bro.

well, i pretty much completed the porty chestbox, i will run with the 2 perpex pices that have the crack in them from my boo boo on install, unless of course the new ones show up in time, i can simply unbolt and replace them and rebolt the slots back on.

the wife said it looks real good. and bright too.

i also just modded the way i had the bells on the armor.
remeber i used a thin piece of template material and just took out the screws and layed in on the top and put the screws back in and added a strip of velcro and made these pads with foam covered with a silk like matrial?

well i had a heavier piece of plastic, alot stiffer than a coffee can lid off the top of a tidy cats cat litter box.

i cut pieces the same as the thin ones i had and drilled the holes to match the posts holes.

then knowing the screws were to short using the plastic piece on top, i found some metal screws that were long, and cut them so that when screwed in place with a lil flat washer under the screw head for extra tension spread, were just the right length.

i then took off the velcroed on pads, and placed the new heavier plastic pieces on top of the hinges posts and screwed then down.

it come out real nice, and i dont even need the pads anymore cuz the plastic i used is way more stiffer than before and when held up or placed on me, the bells then hang level, and even stand to have some weight on them without bending too far down.

it should support the cape weight just great and hang perfect.

only 3 more days, and the folks at work are excited to see me show up in the vader. my dad will also meet me later at wally world to check it out around 8 pm that night. and a few other friends said theyd show up to see me there as well.

i really want to find that sorry arsed store manager and let him see what he missed out on on the dvd release night hew refused to let me wear it in then.

he will crap his pants, and realize he should of let me wear it that night.

thats bout all i got for now, im also still waitin for the suit to show, still not holding hope it will in time, and im still waitin for my 11 legion patch. mike said i should have got it way back, i have a email from him i fhave to check out. he may have to send another one my way.

later bros,

Lan it sounds like you are getting really close to being ready for the big H.

I don't have plans right now, I will probably just wear my sith costume with the hood down and watch the little kids wet themselves when I open the door. :)

I working on the porty chest box getting it ready to paint, there was a big scratch across the front and every place the screw mounts were molded in had a deformed place. I filled all the spots and have it in primmer so maybe I will get some paint on it tomorrow if all goes well.

I am also working on the chest armor that I got from smallblock getting it ready for paint so it can be sold. It does not fit and I don't really want to spend the time reworking it to make it fit, when I can get a bigger armor that fits right.

That is about it for now still building and selling sabers.

LAN-ED-TUL
10-27-2006, 11:09 PM
heres an idea for ya pal. suit up in your sith gear like you said, with saber in hand outside the front of the house, maybe by the door, or something, when the lil kiddies come up fire up the saber and say something that would scare the crap outta them.

i thought of doing that at work out front as folks come in.

any ways it sounds like you will still have a lil fun for big H at any rate bro.

oh, and i also got all the fresh batteries i'll need too whilst at wally world when i got the 2 straps i needed.

i too noticed a slight divot where those screw posts were in the front, but theyre not all that noticeble on mine especially after painting. with all the lights on it, they wont even see what little is there as far as the slight divots.

i did prime and paint the box as mine had lil scratches all over the front as it seems they all have. probably from shipping and handling along the way.

i will take a shot of the box and show you guys the backplate i made for it.

i like the way it turned out. i took a lil extra time making it so it looked good.

LAN-ED-TUL
10-27-2006, 11:47 PM
ok heres a few shots i just popped off and sent to photobucket;

i used photoshop to clean them up a bit. the side view shows the worst of the divoting from the screw posts. but being on the sides i wasnt too concerned. you can see how thick the plate is i used, and also the back shot shows the slots i cut for the straps, and the switch.

i cut and spliced into the hot lead right off the battery pack and just left the switch on portys board in the on position and use the new one to turn it on and off.

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c291/LAN-ED-TUL/P1010620.jpg

i pleased with the outcome on it. im also gonna email porty and ask about a rots armor and price, if he still makes them, or will in the near future. i really think his armor like wolverines from him will fit me better than the rubies does, and i may get away with not havin the front straps if it is heavy enough to sit right.

Brother you have every right to be proud that armor looks great. I have ben waiting for daylight outside pictures to get a really good look at the silver paint and it really is nice I would love to do a ESB or ROTJ vader helmet and use that paint it would look outstanding. The helmet and armor are so shiny you need to wear shades just to look at them. 8) :)

Do-Clo
10-30-2006, 08:52 PM
That sounds very cool Bro. I have been working on assembling the porty chest box, and I'll bet his ears are burning, what a crummy kit. Nothing fits right and I have had to sand each piece to make it fit in place correctly. :? I will probably sell this box as I am not really happy with it and get a better box.

LAN-ED-TUL
10-30-2006, 09:04 PM
well, my box itself wasnt bad, and the red/green squares with the square parts they sit in were just fine, and because i wanted metal coin slots instead of plastic, those were great, just had to do a lil thinking on how to mount them seince they fell right thru the slot openings with no lip or nothing to sit on or against.

my only real complaint, were the rods he sent. 3 piece junky all bent up pieces of crap. and too short to boot.

the ones i used on the rubies i got another pair from SA fo the porty box. theyre 3/4 inch longer than the porty rods.

and look better and in 1 solid piece. easy to drill and tap for boltin on the box.

wolverine souinds cool on the animated sig.

i may not have time to get DAYLIGHT shots, but i plan on tryin to get some at wally world, as my plant wont allow cameras, and i bet i cant take any pics, but i might.

i wont get there till 4 pm, and there wont be much daylight, as they say its supposed to be cloudy that day.

i may just have to wait for a nice sunny day for the GOOD pics to take, for my 501 personal pics, yet to be sent in.

i will try to get my daughter, who will be with me, to snap off shots for me.

Do-Clo
10-30-2006, 11:21 PM
The rods that came with my kit are the right length but they are not really good quality. It seems to be hit or miss with porty. Lan you will have to get some good pictures tomorrow of your suit as it is now. Enjoy the suit time.

man, i hate this 2,2,3 schedule crap. found out there were quite a few folk at work disappointed i never made it tuesday night.

and i havent seen my daughter yet.
i dont remember if i mentioned it, but she has moved out 2 weeks ago.

she was supposed to show up wednesday night to appologize, but didnt have the guts to face her own father.

im still steaming mad over this. it will take me quite some time to get over it. especially when that was the last day of vacation i had for this year.

now i have to wait till january, for more.

sorry to vent, but im just irritated beyond belief

I know how it is Bro!

When I wasn't at home, and my dad was pissed, I knew better to avoid him, to let him simmer down. Could be what's happening with your situation.

We here have a common fantasy with our Vader suits, enough to join up with the 501st, and Star garrison, dispite what our first immpessions were, we know it's something we long to do, and for a greater good.

Unfortunately, not everyone sees our vision as we do, my dad would frown upon it, and critisize it (if he knew about it) while my mother (Darth mom), stands behind it, and understands it, in fact she's going to my next troop!
...The lesson is, while your daughter may help you out with it, she may not put your Vader "needs" high on her priority list, or even take it as seriously as you do....Try not to be so hard on her.

Ok, I'll step down from the podium now   :?

i hear what yer sayin bro. but in this case its the opposite.

she likes the stuff, she wanted to dress up, and thinks my vader is way cool. shes, just a lil shy when it comes to gettin up in front of folk, like the stage performance thing at the con.

had to have the wife step in and take her place. she got stage fright.

understandable, and im not mad or nothing on that one.

if you knew the whole story behind why she wasnt there, youd understand why im so mad at her.

but i wont go into it here. but i will say this, she didnt show up cause of some really stupid things that went on. i will leave it at that.

you may be right on the waitin for dad to calm down thing, but im still hacked.

Congrads Tetmatek on making the 501st.

I understand how tough it is trying to do Vader without any help or support on the home front. The wife just rolls her eyes if I mention Darth Vader. :(

I have decided to pull the plug on my Vader efforts. There are many things going on for me right now and I just can't afford to tie up resources in that area right now. When things return to normal for me I will look into maybe doing a Darth Revan costume or other sith lord from the EU.

Lan there are all kinds of ways to deal with a food theif. You could start off with brownies full of Amodium AD which gives the exact oppsite effect of exlax, once they recover then make some chocolate chip cookies using exlax for the chips. Until they catch on you could keep swaping the brownies and cookies for a long time. Or you can spice up you food with a lot of cyanne pepper the same night you bring the exlax chip cookies, if things go well they would be howling at the moon everytime they go.

well, guess not much goin down here in the brotherhood as of late.

howd the troop go Tet?

i was supposed to be off work all next week, but today coming in, the board has changed, i work wed, and thurs. so that sucks.

i work bird day.

no turkey for me.

seems like everything goin to crap lately since the big H night i missed out on.

only redeeming thing bout working next week on the holiday, is i get TRIPLE time for 18 hours.

that should give me enough cash to set aside for portys new armor hes makin. and also the new monitor and graphics card i want.

need the monitor as mines doin the flashy thing for a bit then stops and is fine. heard that means its startin to fail. not bad tho, its a dell monitor i got originally 4 years ago with the dell crap system i got from dell.

so theres a lil silver to the black cloud. lol

I have been busy on my end also. I have been working on my shed, turning it into a work shop. I spent a couple of days helping a friend out in his shop, he does pressure washers, it was a nice change.

Lan sorry to hear about you working on turkey day but the money will be nice.

I had to buy a new video card for my PC because the one that is in it won't work with several games so I figure it is time to upgrade. I found a new ATI 128 meg video card on ebay for 36.00, so I splurged and bought it.

And that is the news from the south,

Ok things just seem to happen lately, I unpacked my lathe today and set it up and hit the power switch and nothing. The little light comes on but that is it. I called and they have them in stock so it looks like I will be swapping the deffective one out tomorrow. This is the reason I bought one locally because if I have a problem I can return it. I also have a 2 year warranty on it if anything happens just hand it to them and they hand me a new one.

For starters
-my Rubies shin guards have deep gouges on the tops, the parts that cover the knees
The Armor itself had marks running across it, that I couldn't get rid of, maybe have to wet sand, and re-clear coat.
The bottom screen on the mask was loose, and so were the lenses, I tried to re glue them with hot glue, but no matter what I tried, didn't work.
There were some minor nicks in the helmet, and mask, and I covered them with a graphic artist's black opaque pen.

Then I re-polished the armor, and lid with the Imperial glaze, that helped hide the marks on the armor. The marks looked like residue from duct tape, but nothing would take them out. I tried lighter fluid, which desolves any sticky tape residue, but didn't work

I had to hurry up, and sew the buckles on the straps I fiberglassed in on the "Smallblock" shins, buff them out with the Imperial glaze, since there was no-way the Rubies shins were even remotely passable for ANY event. I am lucky the "Smallblock" shins were passable, but they still need to come along way.

I had to cut down the size of the lower screen in the mask, then I took duct tape, and taped it in really good, did the same for the tops of the lenses. It seems that's the first thing people want to touch when they see the lid is off your head, are the lenses. So they became loose.

On this troop...The mask got a bad one inch paint chip in the neck, from abrasion with the armor, so I will have to sand down the bottom part of the mask, and repaint it. Then I will fiberglass the lenses, and lower screen in place, and add a felt liner around the inside edge of the neck opening in the armor, to keep in from scraping the neck of the mask.

I am very glad I took the day off, so I had a limited time to set everything straight, I would have not had to hurry, if I had any idea where this damage came from, I don't have a clue on that :?

I also tried to hot glue a fan inside the mask, but that didn't work out well at all.
I was however happy that I could take as many breaks as I wanted to, I had to clean the lenses off from time to time.

I will take some time to get the gear back to it's state of glory, maybe starting after the holiday.
One of the Stormtroopers told me in the dressing room, that periodical "off times" for repairs were standard for everyone.

Man, I have to tell you, everyone at the convention had to pick their jaws off the floor when I walked by them, and that was an awesome feeling, especially the look on all the kids faces, a few went running in sheer terror :? ....What's a Dark Lord to do?

man that was one thing i was real careful bout. anyone handling the supreme lid. i wouldnt let noone touch it but me and the daughter or wife.

i will be even more so careful with the new fg ng lid. i think i may have done what will stop the neck gouge you got. i already layed some of that sticky back felt from wally world on the underside of the armor in front. and tried it on and tested for movement. seemed to work just fine.

and i have side to side movement as it clears just enough in front with the rubies armor.

now, im lookin to grab that new rots armor porty is workin on right now as soon as he gets it done. and it will be larger than the rubies is for sure, so i should be able to pad up the underside more for the neck protection in front.

i still gotta get some imperial glaze from pepe boys, shoot i gotta see if they even have it here.

then i can go over everything and polish the whole hardparts up good with it.

of course ya guys know, i think ya do, i finished the porty chestbox, he hasnt sent me the new red perspex replacements yet, but said he would and should have them next week sometime, then i just have to take off the back, unbolt the slots, replace the busted pieces, and boltem back one.

i left mine set up so i can unbolt the slots, after i made a major mod to the inside with a additional piece of plastic for them to sit against. they bolt to it.

i have the new body suit also. and it does fit better this time, but not perfect. i can at least wear it now.

i had to lengthen the cuts for the straps he put in, as they werent quite wide enough. now i just need to sew around the cut i made.

box is set with some velcro on back and on suit to aid in gettin on and off.

like i did with the rubies. just need to get the speaker velcro placements on there now. been tinkerin with a idea from another vader in sld on a circuit city personal amp. it has built in speaker/s and a volume control, h run the output from the hyper to the input/mike plug on unit.

said its so dang loud he only uses it at half volume mostly.

thinkin bout it, but its 50 bucks and i havent seen it but online, my local doesnt seem to have it .

It had cracked like it was dropped on the tusks leaving a chunk takin out. As you see that is history. This bucket is easier to remove while suited. It is a good thing if you scare a little one to let them know your just a regular person in the suit.

ok, after confering with darth phaeton on sld, he's a guy ive seen pics of his vader for some time now, and is known to have a really great vader costume,

i was talkin with him on how he runs his hyperdyne unit. i found out he uses a amp hooked to it. like the waistband portable amps with built in speaker.

and i found out you just hook output of hyper unit into mike input jack of amp. thats it.

i have a bid on one right now on ebay and its a 7 watt output on the speaker. of course this is a lrger unit than my 2 lil 4 watt sterep speker units i use now, but he says, with his setup, he only runs half volume and can be heard clearly in a crowd. these things are used for tour guides and such.

so my thinkin is, maybe a single 7 watt unit will actually be louder than tryin to sync 2 seperate 4 watt units.

the bids at 25 bucks right now. so its worth a shot to see if i cant get louder volume out of the hyper unit.

i will let y'all know if i get it and test that with the hyper unit.

the only things that havent been replaced or scracth built, or repainted on my suit is the cape, robe, bodysuit. although i just purchased a new 2 part suit.

so i guess i replaced that too.

that leaves untouched the robe and cape, thats it.

It really depends on how acurate you want your vader costume to be, the rubies is lacking in several areas but it can be reworked to a point where it is very good it just takes time.

Some things that will need attention:
1) Rework the helmet to make it more acurate, replace lens and repaint.

2)Replace plastic rods on the chest box with metal rods, swap the red and green lens becsuase they are probably in the wrong order, repaint.

3)Repaint chest armor

4)Replace plastic knobs on belt boxes and repaint.

5)Replace cheap plastic belt buckle with a metal buckle

If you address these areas you should end up will a pretty good looking costume.

The one mod you will will want to do is replace the lens in the helmet. The rubies lens are the worst, you almost need a seeing eye dog when you wear the helmet. Trik Toys has lens that will replace the stock lens without having to rework anything and you will be able to see when in costume.

nice wolverine.

i just sewed mine on my bama jacket i got as a reward.

i am still waitin on my SLD patches, but should be on the way pretty quick. for all the waitin, i think hes gonna throw a extra one in. which is good, cuz i got a place for it on the jacket.

as far as fans go, on the rubies i had 2. one mounted in the key pointin down on top my head, and one in the lower grill blowing into my face.

worked pretty well.

now the NG lid i only have one larger fan than in the rubies, in lower grill, blowin into my face, and the metal vents installed with a hole drilled behind them so they actually function as vents.

like wolverine said, just get a idea of how large of a fan you want to put in, then get one at the RS store. a 9v batt clip, and a on off switch if you choose.

hotglue the fan in place where you wish wghichever direction you want airflow to run. and i use a piece of industrial velcro slapped on the side of the battery so i can slap it in place on a piece of velcro i place in there to hold the battery. and if using a switch, just hotglue it someplace out of the way inside.

Hey Lan, a little flash trick that I like to use is to reflect the flash in other directions. Try a sheet of notebook paper, hold that up against the flash at an angle so that the flash fires throughout the room. You should still have enough light so that the picture looks good but you will not have any "flashspots" on your armor.

cool tet. please do that. it might take a lil bit for it to load at home on my dialup, as youtubes and such usually do. i used to be able to view things like that at work, but windows media player and things like the youtube videos, have now been blocked by the corporation.

james, thanks for that tip, i will try that in the future, but what i was refering to, is the photo. i used photoshop to fix the one side where my strap was showing. all i did was made a duplicate, then on one cut out the other side in that same area, then flip it horizontally, then paste it over the bad spot. took a few tries, till i got it to stick just right.
then just a clone stamp touchup. i think it really turned out ok, myself, i cant tell where i patched that up, but a pro could probably spot it right away.

i had meant i wished i could eliminate the glare off the box and mask a bit. a guy that knows his stuff could probably do it in a snap, but im just learning this stuff.

i will do the other one in the morning, as that one doesnt have any glare on the chest box. if i darken that one out just a tad, i think it will look a lot better than this one.

Your new sig reflects on what the clone stamp can do, as I had to copy a section of your inner cloak to mask the strap, then copy a section of the body suit to staighten out the whole "look".
ALSO - this is why people ask for OUTDOOR pictures, where your light source (the sun) is above you, and it illuminates black (your lid) better than any flash could ever! -where you can make out the features :x
If your gonna take pictures that represent you, don't do it half assed, do it right (in the sun), and capture as much detail as you can -N'uff Said

You have a PM by the way LAN

i still need the outdoor shots though so the box and lid dont get flared out on meas you suggested wolverine. i might also just for kicks take another shot of the chestbox, and paste that on to see what it looks like on the glared shot pic.

those look better, wolverine? im tryin.

the amp showed up the other day, and i slapped the batts in and hooked up the included headset mike, and tested it out, that sucker was loud real loud.

so then i got out the hyper unit, and found one of my cables i had already,. and jacked that amp into the speaker output from the hyper unit.

i had to play around till i figured out the best sound, which, meant i had to hold that darn button like i done with the stereo mini 4 watt speakers whilst turning unit on.

once i found out i had to set it the same way as the other speakers, i held the button, powered the unit up. and only had the volume on the amp about 1/4 on.

that sucker was damn loud. i couldnt get it past half on the amp, without it hurtin and startin to feedback a bit on me.

but it was 50 times louder than the 2 stereo crap speakers i was using.

now the only problem now, is figuring out exactly where to wear it so it sounds good.

bro, that waa one ugly paint chip. that lil ordeal at my dads house with the pics a couple weeks ago, and havin the hard time getting the lid on, ended up with a couple tiny chips on my stuff too.

i think i figured out what happened tho. i used the rubies suit with the vest and all 4 packs. the armor wasnt sittin right, to leave enough gap for the neck.

today i tried on the new 2 part suit from cucblack. just the jacket part, with the armor, tryin to see where i can place the amp i got, of which i bought another one and oits on its way now.

i found with the jacket setup, if i slipped the armor slightly forward on me, and tensioned the straps i have in front down. it sits with more gap to allow the neck to go in easily, with movement. and yep i have a felt piece on the underside around the neck already.

that probably saved me from more serious damage that day. but i did get a tiny chip on the bottom edge of the neck, a paint pen from the auto store touched that right up, and also a 1/4 inch chip off the edge to one side of the armor at the neck.

again, easy fix with the paint pen. i then used the imperial glaze to polish up the armor and chestbox and shins.

they do look better than before after using it. i was pleased with it the other day when i used it on the mask as well, aafter i touched up the ting edge chip.

so basically, it looks like if i use the rubies suit anymore i will have to add a pad on each shoulder towards the front to make the armor sit down against my chest at the bottom, and stand out jkust a bit more in front at the neck to allow for the mask.

the cucblack suit seems to work pretty well. porty just told me the rots fg armor may be done before he shuts down on the 15th for the holidays.

i asked for pics and measurements on it when done. also he said it will have the cape loop hooks installed, bell attachment hardware, and the bells, and the chain. i am tryin to find out now what the chain will be, like rubies, YUK, or like the plastic stuff we're using to replace it now, or more movie like and be square link and flexible.

also he said, it will be painted. so whe i know more i will pass it on here.

the amp is super great. this thing will work fantasticlly with the hyper unit.

i got a idea, from a guy, beleive it or not, the darkblade guy i got kicked off STT for, on the SLD site. hes being civil with me there, so im doing the same right back.

he uses a pair of ontour JBL speakers. he made a hook, andf runs a couple straps in chewbacca bandolier fashion with a speaker hangin from each strap under each arm.

that gave me a idea, why not, since the waistband amp already has a webstrap, let it out, wear it in a bandolier type fashion, with the unit hanging on each side like that.

i tried it with the one p[artially suit today to see if it would be in the way or anything.

it looks like it may just work out. so i bought another amp. and when it gets here, i can cross them in bandolier fashion set the amps where i want hangin under my arms as low down as i can as not to interfere with the belt boxes belt or anything. then i can mark where the straps cross, sew them together at the front, and back where they cross.

making a harness out of it, so to speak. i already figured i will used a small piece of velcro stuck to the backside of each amp and a piece on the suit where they will sit.

that will give a bit more stability and keep them in place and not moving around so much.

then its just a simple matter to run a short cord from each to a Y connector i have alreay, and jacked into hyper unit.

i tested the amp i have now out with the hyper unit. it sounds fantastic, and super super loud. with 2 units, i can only turn them up a lil bit, so batt life will last a long time. theyre designed so the louder you run them the more power is consumed.

heres a real rough drawing of the setup im tryin for:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c291/LAN-ED-TUL/roughdrawin.jpg

they wont hang directly down, i will have them slightly forward, but not much. and testin the one, the wife said it sounds like its more forward now and nothing much at all from behind like the other day.

and with the inner robe and cape covering it, should distribute the sound well.

Wolverine

Thanks for the "John Madden" style illustration Brutha! 8)

The amp I bought way back in the beginning of this thread works quite well for me, and I wear it on my belt opposite my saber.
...and the stunned look I get when I lean down and out-stretch my gloved hand to a kid, and tell them "I feel the force is strong with you" is quite satisfying.
My gear is quite loud, but to each his own, what ever works. 8)

Hey, also - the Rubies armor I never had inflict any damage at all on my lid, because it is thin plastic, it's rather easy to slip on and off without so much as a scratch.
The fiberglass armor, has a ridge that points down, and into the bottom end of the mask, the constant head movement, and taking the mask off, and on, had done that. That ridge is wicked man.
I'm going to take some foam pipe insulation, and run a cut down it, and glue it around the ridge to soften it, and then it shouldn't scratch the mask at all, and still allow full head movement.
During the down time, I'm going to fiberglass in a fan mount, and the lower screen so it doesn't come loose anymore either.

well i did say it was rough, lol

im glad your setup works great for you bro. i just want happy with those cheaper units, and decided i wanted the best. and with the speakers i was using, i thought i had a good setup, but after doin some reading and askin, from more experinced vaders, (been a vader alot longer than us), and seen how they hookup theirs, and what they used, i decided to try out the amp thing with it.

theyre right, it does work lots better. and as cheap as these amps are, only 25 bucks on ebay, they would work for the units we had been messing with early on, and significantly iimprove the volume and sound of them too.

i still have some of those wally world units, and the kit one from way back, i was, just for the heck of it, going sometime to hookup the amp to one of those and see what it does.

should be easy enough to try out, just make a hookup off the output wires to unit speakers, and run a jacked cord to amp.

maybe, if this works, it would be a much cheaper solution to a hyperdyne for everyone else. a waistband amp and the more affordable units.

just a thought.

Like I said earlier, (Not boasting) I'm rather good at impressions, and I do the vader voice well enough, (that's what my friends say anyway) That's why I bought a "Personal P.A." not a portable amp.
The speaker for the "breather" sits inside my mask just under the mic, so it amps that as well.
I've heard the Hyperdyne units, and wasn't at all impressed with them. The guy that's Vader in the fan film "Sith apprentice" (maybe Vader painter) uses one, sorry, wasn't good enough sounding for me. The guys in my garrison complimented me on my voice, and "sound", and it's dang loud, like I said to each his own Brutha.
Besides, in this game, and reality, it's not how much you spend, it's how much you save, got my $200.00 personal P.A. for $70.00 included shipping. Done.

i wasnt pickin on ya bro. i too wasnt impressed at first with what i heard sound samples on the hyper unit. the guy who was talkin had a way too high pitched voice. mines lower, and the 7 tone levels adjustments on the unit allow me to fine tune it out using the lower tone of voice.

i always thought it was really cool, that you had a good natural vader tone, that helps you out immensely on a setup. mines low too, but i bet not as low as yours, so i needed a lil more help, thats all.

with your natural voice talent, you just didnt need as much help.

When I have time this weekend, I'll shoot ya some pictures of the ridge inside the armor, then you'll really get a flavor for what I'm talkin' about.
Just for fun, I wet sanded, and repainted the armor, and finally got the marks on it to go away. I also wasn't happy with some small pock marks I found, so I used some modeling puddy, and filled them before I wet sanded.
The armor and mask, are coming along fine, The armor is about to be clear coated, and the mask needs wet sanding, and a couple more coats of black. I'm sure glad I bought the 'Black gold" paint in a reasonable quantity.
I think the marks were from the paint raising, I think I waxed, and buffed it too soon after the clearcoating. this time I'll wait a couple of months.

When you get yer armor LAN, I need you to shoot off a couple of pictures on how "Porty" mounts his bells Please, I may buy a spare set of armor from him. as well. 8)

Our french connection Erv is working on a voice unit based on his saber sound moudle and the early tests sound good. This will be the best solution because it will be based on the sd card so that the programing can be changed to taylor it to your own voice to get the effect you are looking for.

I have done a few stage productions so I have had some practice at adapting my voice and adding a accent as needed. One Christmas I had to play the part of an old english king with the proper accent from the time period. I had a tape to listen to to get the accent and style of speach down, so the result on stage was quite good, I even had a solo to sing in the same voice. Loads of fun

well, bros, i just had to plink out 323 bucks. that cable i had swapped out with an older one that was still in the ground blew last night.

no blackouts or nothing, just not enough power for dryer and water tank again.

so we got 150 feet of some heavy guage copper wire, and i just finished runnin it from the pole to the house and hooked it up.

yeah, its outside on the ground right now, but the casing is supposed to weather proof, so i should be good for awhile.

that craps expensive. 100 ampp alum. wire was almost 400 bucks for 150 feet.

i plan on using the money i will get from the 401k when i do the withdrawl in 2008 for a new house, and have to spend about 1200 bucks just for 3 new 100 amp wires to the house.

its freakin ridiculous. luckily, i still have the money set back for portys armor.

and wolverine, bro, you know i will pop off pics of for you, no prob pal.

do-clo, i think i seen mention of ERV's voice thing someplace a month or 2 back. hadnt heard anything since then tho.

i know you have the old voice units we tried out at the begining, thats why i mentioned to wolverine this amp i got off ebay real cheap, might work well with those units, itll boost the volume, tremendously.

i will hook one up and try it myself to see what kinda results it gives.

even the aluminum, being even smaller around, but rated for 100 amps, was 406 bucks for all 3 cables together.

might of been better to go that way, but, it was smaller guage wire than what she got. she got me 2 guage wire.

Aluminum is easier to fry, and break, because it's less dense than copper.

repairs look great. you redoing the paint on the entire face, or just the lower neck?

if only the lower area, i hope it matches the paint NG used above.

i was thinkin of just doing the tusk repair on the spare face, and paint that area again, and not the whole mask.

the dome, well thats easy enough with the bad scrapes its got to just sand it down and reshoot the whole dome.

im planning on after i get the new house in 08 to build a manequin and dress it up in the spare vader parts i have. i have enough to almost do one. just need a spare robe and cape and i will be set.

if i better my robe and cape along the way, i will use the rubies ones on the dummy.

im gonna rig the lights and a saber on him to a motion detector, like another guy i read about is doing.

but also, on mine, im gonna have a recording blast out in JEJ's vader voice a good line that will scare the crap outta someone.

I would like to do a Vader display in the house but the wife would not want it in the living room and the rest of the house is on the small side so space is an issue. :?

Lan for your repair the mask would be easy enough to repaint, if you just pop out the lens and stuff that way you would not have to mask anything off, or consider packing it up and sending it to our brother Tetmatek for a pro paint job.

maybe, i'll just have to see when im ready to fix it. on the stuff holdin the lenses in place, it just looks like a black silicone stuff. i think ive seen this at the hardware stores.
i think he used the same stuff to put in the screens as well.

Well I guesse I should post pics with the full suite on now.
http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f58/Ti-el_Terall/100_0691-1.jpg

Review.

Ill start with the soft parts.

Main suite When i ordered the costume I ordered XL so its a bit bigger then I would like. I was suprised how nice it was out of the box. It covers well and looks fairly good. The only bad part for me was that they had the holes for the chest box to go thru. The chest box is fairly well don and I like the light up sequince. Overall verygood quality for the price.

8/10

Gloves Gloves were fairly thin but still very nice. Fit very well, the only thing wrong is that I cant stuff the sleeves of the suit into the gloves far enough with out bunching up.

8/10

Cloak Nice and light for the price point of this costume Im very happy with it.

9/10

Cape Nice and long, and Heavy. Sometimes it can pull the chest armour back and kind off strangle you.

8/10

Hard parts (Armour)

Shin Guards I like how they fit, the only thing wrong was the zipper, really hard to get on by yourself.

8/10

Shoulder Armour This is probably one of my favorite pieces of this suite. It looks good, feels good to where, and has a nice light wieght. I really cant find anything wrong except the inacurate chain but noone will notice.

9.5/10

And at last the...

Helmet This is probably the most important part of the entire costume. The look of it right out of the box is not that bad imho. The most annoying thin wearing this would be the voice box thing, wich I cut out right away. Next would be the heat, I think it would have been easy of them to make one in it. After that it would be the meshed areas. Not enough! I can see my skin thru it. After that it would be the lenses wich arnt that bad except maybe the lack of visual you get.

8/10

Overall For the price you can get it for on ebay I highly recomend this costume. Lots of fun to wear and it also gets lots of apreciation. Not much modding you would have to do except add a fan and cut down around the lenses for more visual.

Overall

8.5/10

And a couple more picks.

Ti the suit looks pretty good, the fit is not bad with a little adjustment it will be good. A layer of window screen will fix the see through grilles and if you pop out the lens you could trim some of the material away and still use the stock lens to improve your field of vision.

987654321a
12-12-2006, 05:25 PM
yea the grill is kinda retarded they want you to breathe but remember vader didnt breath. he was on a type of life support lol literally.

LAN-ED-TUL
12-12-2006, 06:25 PM
well first observations:

to stop the suit bunching up above and around the chestbox,

get a phased cooling vest. i use one and they WORK!!.

that will fill out the suit a bit more and not look so sloppy loose. and will keep you cooler in the suit.

and the suit IS supposed to have the slots for the straps. that chestbox maounts without any visible means holding it.

the helmet, well if ya read back early on in this thread, you will see just how much work has to be done to it, JUST to make it useable.

its a warped ESB mask, and look at the domes flare line around on back, they dont meet, the line goes all wompy sided back there.

a fix needed for that, and all the wrong messed up things on the face.

then its a great helmet once fixed. onmine, i havent done half the mods that do-clo done, and mine looks tons better.

go buy black window screen from the hardware store ansd cut pieces and hotglue them over the front and lower grills, then get a fan from RS that will fit, wire it to a switch and a 9 v batt lead. hot glue it all in place. then you will have air in there.

the chain, yeah, you need to swap it out. its pretty easy to pull the clips out and swap out. get some of the plastic chain like you see on my vader in the sig, and swap it out.

in all, you got a good starting point vader, just some tweaking needed here and there. trust me, we have already been down this road startin back in febuary and still goin today.

good start!!

LAN,
your assuming he wants this for "trooping". :?
My take on his "review" was that he just wanted the costume. :?

ti-el_terall, are you planning on modding your costume for joining either the 501st, or the 327th??? :?

If you like the suit "out-of-the box", and have no aspirations of joining a costuming group, then GREAT FOR YOU 8) :D
The only modds you would have to do is fix the chestbox light orientation.

http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k49/Darth_Raizzar/VaderBox.jpg

You may, like many here, decide you want to after awhile, then -KEEP IN MIND, this gets expensive.

There's much to be replaced ...like gloves,

....Beltboxes

...and so on.

...and let's face it, the "Lid" as well, I've never seen the Rubies Lid look this good.

Thanks for the replies guys! Iv heard alot about the helmet and I am going to be getting new lenses and new paint job. My plans for me and my friends is to start a little fan force. Im Vader my friends looks alot like luke, and there may be some other people around here that would be into it. Im not planning on modding for 501st because 1) Im 14, I might think about it in 4 years  and 2) I dont really want to join in the 501st. I live up in canada on a (fairly) small town and I would have to drive awhile just to get to an event.

I plan on wearing this suite in parades and special evemnts and the rest of the time it will be on the manaquine i am making.

Well good for you, :D

maintaining a vader suit is a lot of work, as well as the "trooping" involved in a costuming group.

It's an advantage you'll have, not to be involved in their politics, and the pressure of being a more involved member, your a free agent, have fun with it, and fun with the costume, that's the most important thing.

The work you plan on doing will not be easy, just to let you know. But if you get the lid lookin' good, swap the lights in the chestbox, some light work on the armor, and replace the chain, your vader will look great, without spending the small fortune some of us did, to have "movie accurate" costumes for membership in these costuming groups.

I think your costume plans, may at least get you into "The Brotherhood" Here, where you can share your thoughts, and progress with the rest of the Sith here.

Just a small update from me. Iv been walking around my house alot lately with the helmet and shoulder armour on. I find it alot easier to have the helmet under the shoulder armour. Today i ripped out the foam and trimmed it down and I get alot better visual and can breath easier now.

Over Christmas break im going to install a fan and more black mesh in the mask and cange the lighting in the chest box. Do I just have to flip it the other way around? Im not quiet sure wich way It should go.

If I have time I want to make a neckbrace as well, like on tf.net supreme thread. After that I should be good for my first time in public, but I would like to give the helmet a re-paint but I cant really paint anything without having the drips from the paint every where.

Merry Christmas everyone!

you open up the back, carefully take a exacto knife and chip away the plastic mushroom on the post that hold the squares in place. then lift that out flip it so green is on top, reinsert, and use hotglue to secure it back down. easy as that.

Lord Maul
12-20-2006, 10:25 PM
so that is 10 grand right there. assuming that each costume costs roughly 2 grand(that is what the vaders cost)

987654321a
12-20-2006, 10:40 PM
the vader if i can find a cheap price maybe 500-600bucks, the boba is probably 300-400, same with jango, maul around 50 bucks. yep 50 bucks, i can make the tunic by myself. and the stormtrooper, i wont go into cause its gonna be a pain. forget about that.

Lord Maul

the brotherhood's have costed 2 grand. that's what it'll take for a really nice one.

LAN-ED-TUL
12-20-2006, 11:41 PM
pretty close to that, cuz most of us have had to rework, or replace most of the rubies just to make it nice.

too many indescrepancies in the rubies to really use as is, unless thats just what ya want, then mo power to ya!

but most of us have spent 2000 or more. i have 2 grand in mine and then the added hyperdyne vader voice, pushes me to 2500 and im still going.

fixin to buy a new FG porty ROTS armor when theyre done next month. another 270 bucks. and im still thinking of another bodysuit better than the one i got from cucblack. his is ok, but not great.

id like to get a LA suit. lucas alvarez.

round 600 to 800 bucks right there.

that may be awhile tho. armors a definate.

just spent 80 bucks recently upgrading my sound system for the hyperunit.

now running 2, 7 watt PA portable waistband speakers worn in a cross bandolier type style under the robe. these puppies are crazy loud too, you will hear me comin for sure.

so the price keeps climbing as you will see, once you start down the dark path of costuming, theres no stopping the spending, lol

yep, im afraid your right, lol im always seeing something i think i need to improve upon. i sometimes have to really fight the urge to mod something, when i know its pretty good, but could be even better.

thats what makes it hard. with the new amps pa waistband things i got and the next aquisition of portys rots armor, and maybe something else on down the road, i will be pushin the 3 grand mark easily.
\
\

especially if i do go ahead later next year and try for a lucas alvarez suit.

theres this one guy on thr rpf and 501st, that goes by TMP he makes a italian leather 2 and 3 piece suit. the 3 one is 1100 something, and the 2 is 850.

i cant remember what lucas wanted. but i think it was round the 6 to 8 hundred marks.

arms are sewn onto a lightweight material.

and a pair of pants in leather.
