You can use an emitter but I wouldn't recommend it. Under heavy use it can pop off the heatsink and it's as good as dead then. If you still want to try it it'd just take some thermal epoxy.

Well tim mounts them to star blanks. where you get them I have no idea.

But I know some here dont use the star blank. they just mount them to a heatsink with some kind of compound or wedged into place like jay gons setup(I think).

I think you can get ks emitters at luxeon.com and tims led mount has two nylon screws to mount the star leds.
