this is what I understand from what I read here so far:
colored LEDs are brighter than a filtered white LED.
3w RGB LEDs are not as bright as 3w single color LEDs.
right?
which is brighter, filtered 3w white LED or 3w RGB LED?

the RGB is as bright as any 3W single but here is the draw back. IT'S A BATTERY HOG. you need to own stock in duracell to keep it fed cause if look at the pic in the post it's 3 3W LED in one emitter housing. RGB is the latest technology in led. all colors can be made not just the four i show. In my latest test I have made Mace purple
LadySith Pink and a few more. With all three on and a potentiometer hooked up you can blend at will. Look at the signs in the lumileds led presentation on their site. The signs that show pictures and movement are done with RGB technology just like a projection TV. LIke I said they need power. I have alot of sabers and all my MR have rarly needed batteries or my single luxeons are not bad but this one has gotten 3 sets since i posted pics the day it was built. Just like they say "every rose has a thorn."

ok, but are they the same power drain used one at a time? if you can indeed get 3x 3w LED colors in one unit, it doesn't matter to me if using them together takes more juice. i only need the 3 trilogy colors to begin with.

hook 'em up to work one at a and they draw power like one led

tetmatek, you beat me to it. I bought mine on ebay and I am still waiting to get it. I was thinking to try potentiometers and in theory be able to get ANY color.
So, how did you do it? Have you been able to adjust it to white?
What size/kind of potentiometers are you using? Sliders/rotary/thumbwheel? 3 of them, right?

now another question - have you compared a 3W RGB produced purple with a 3W white filtered to purple? Which is brighter? How about power drain? As I see it, you'd have green completely off and red at half power to get the purple, am I right?

Geez, I got excited and it shows [:D]
Thanks bro!

do multi-colored LEDs come in any other combination besides RGB? YBG? YRB?
also, do they come in 1w? that might help the heat problem.

no heat problem just battery eater. not available in 1 watt
